Leaking roof! To make a long story short!! I hired someone else last month and they did NOT perform to my standard. Got a hold of "Box Construction" and i told Steve "Home" is where i feel safe and where i want my family to feel safe as well! With a leaking roof and a concern family, son telling his dad "Papa the house is broken"! I hired Steve and his TEAM because of his intelligent, caring and i feel confident that he can deliver premium quality of work. Steve also went out of his way to fix another leaking issue and we are greatful for his honesty and prompt action to take care of it not leave it as is. Box Construction delivers Safety, Team performance, Quality and Pride of what they do work on. God Bless You and your TEAM! Thanks, JD

Houman was on time and very professional. The problem was diagnosed and repaired quickly something two previous electricians had failed to do. Houman even drove back up Laguna Canyon on a Sunday to get a part from Home Depot and did not charge me a penny over the cost of the part. Highly recommended.

I hired Robin (MFP Construction) to install a post mounted mailbox at our office. We immediately ran into unforeseen issues, like a gas line and buried concrete in the two places I wanted to install the mailbox. Robin was flexible and innovative with solving issues that arose. He has an incredible work ethic, while waiting for the concrete to set, he cleaned out a rock bed adjacent to the project removing debris and rearranging the 200 pounds of rocks, this was not part of his scope of work, he did this instead of having downtime. When he was done, the building front looked like it did the day we moved in, clean and professional. I could not be any more impressed with his finished work or his work ethics. I would absolutely hire him again for any project that requires his expertise.

I had a wood fence project which was quite complicated because one 20 feet long retaining wall had to be built before the wood fence installation. Tim took this hard project. He and his crews, Ryan and Nick were all hard workers. Every single day, they came to the job site on time, did everything they should do according to the construction code. Besides, Tim was very attentive to my needs and modified the original construction plan by adding one 6 feet long concrete block wall to the iron gate. I am very satisfied with his professional service. Tim is passionate about his job, which makes him outstand other contractors. I'd like to recommend his service to any other's project!

New Mellennium Construction (NMC) provided excellant service and a truck load of advice during the almost month in which Mr. Torres was performing various jobs during our house overall. The roofing, first class. Not only do they do roofs but just about any other construction related job. Installed french doors, modified my fireplace, removed and install dry wall and assited with some electrical work. I would recommend NMC to anyone who wants good work done at a fair price and he is a California State License contractor which alone speaks volumes.

I chose to go with Eddie w/Skyline Construction and I'm so happy i did. He installed wood flooring throughout my house & built a beautiful outdoor patio cover . I have used other companies & handymen in the past but was never overly impressed with the timeline of the jobs and some were just plain unprofessional and unattentive to details. Where Eddie outshined & won my future business was his ability to solve issues as they presented themselves (like when my slab floor was very uneven after pulling out the carpet). There was no hesitation on solving it and presenting me options that stayed within our agreed budget. The detail in his work shows he has pride in what he does! My decision on writing this review and recommending Skyline is because people like Eddie are hard to come by... Hes not just looking to make an extra dollar wherever he can; he actually looked out for my bottom line and was very honest in his recommendations. Rafael Garcia La Habra, CA

I highly recommend Steve Fry for your construction needs! We had a barn door custom made just sitting at our home and in need of installation. Steve responded timely to my Thumbtack request and we made arrangements to meet within a few days. He showed up on time and was prepared to do the work. The door kit was a bit raw, but he knew exactly what to do. He was friendly, and is truly and expert in door hanging. The final product took only a few hours and it looks beautiful. Couldn't be happier. Please call Steve for your construction projects - you won't be disappointed!

Jordan as a person was very nice. His inital follow up was prompt and he spoke very highly of his attention to detail. As a first time homeowner, I know little about construction and heavily rely on the expert knowledge of others to assist with our remodel. We hired Jordan after meeting three other contractors based solely on our interaction with him. When we originally had Jordan out to our house it was for a flooring quote only. Jordan explained he also preformed landscaping work on the side so we added that to our list. Jordan did an amazing job installing the floors! The entire dynamic of the house changed because of the floors. I was very disappointed in a few other areas which is the reason for 4 stars. We do not currently live in the house although we do have a few items in place for weekend visits. Towards the end of the job Jordan said that they were mostly finished so I had gone to check out the progress. The tile work in both bathrooms is crooked. The master bath is very noticeable. In addition, my bedding was covered in dust and they had smeared grout into the carpet in my bedroom. There was also sloppy grouting and caulking done in several areas of my home. To add insult to injury his crew decided it was ok to help themselves to my kids popcicles - this actually upset me just asuch as the tile floor. Giving credit where it is due: Jordan and Tim did have my carpets cleaned, my bedding dry cleaned and I was given the option to have them rip up the bathroom floor or receive a discount from my final bill. Jordan did offer to replace the missing popcicles as well although that never did happen. The landscape looks nice as well but we asked to keep the remaining turf and that also didn't happen. I asked jordan about it and he said what was salvageable was in our shed - it wasnt. Again, I was very happy with the floors but the other items make it hard to say if I would rehire for additional projects. Nice guy but I didn't feel like our home was cared for in the way he said it would be. If you do decide to hire Jordan my recommendations would be: 1. Get a detailed breakdown of the work 2. Notate about the use of your personal items (they completely filled up both our garbage cans) 3. Inspect. Inspect. Inspect. Check every corner.

Alan Pikul and his staff had many design suggestions that complimented our designs ideas perfectly. The staff, especially Mike and Robbie were amazing and very concerned with the entire construction project ,often stopping by just to check that any subcontractors were up to Apotects standards. We have been completely satisfied with the construction, clean up and follow-up of this 5 star project. We share our home with friends and family with pride.

This is my strong recommendation for Coggins Construction. Patrick of Coggins Construction is a local licensed contractor professional with over four decades of experience under his belt. We spent a lot of time talking with him discussing options and both he and his wife visited our home on the weekend. We hired Patrick to demo the front living room, demo the entryway, remove skylights, and reframe everything the original as built state. Patrick and his team have a passion for construction and it shows on the job. We had a strict timeline to meet. They showed up on time, worked hard, and cleaned up well after each day. Also they were very kind to my family, even my hyper Chihuahua! I had a few scope changes throughout and Patrick was able to accommodate my requests with great price and no impact to schedule. Thank you Coggins Construction for transforming our house into a home!

We wanted to get crown molding installed along with a trayed ceiling. Although none of the contractors knew exactly what we wanted, Frank worked with us to turn the image in our mind into reality. He got the job because, as a general contractor, he has the skill, manpower and equipment available to do multiple jobs like electrical work and cabinet work (our job also involved drywall and painting work). So, although the project started as a simple crown molding job, we got a lot of other things taken care of. Franks and his crew was very friendly and professional. They were very responsive to our requests and worked to make us happy. For example, we wanted to have Plexiglas installed in a cabinet door. After he did this (in his shop) he didn't think that we would like the result, so he installed a dark glass panel instead. We were very pleased with the result. In fact, we were so pleased that we are hiring them again for another job. I highly recommend Ruiz Construction Co.

We hired Jeff from Rick Dorn Constrution to install some kitchen cabinets in our remodel. We had cabinets picked out already and he recommended some others of better quality for less. Installation took 2 days and he cleaned up after himself. He also pointed out some other things that should be fixed on our project which was greatly appreciated. We would work with them again.

The technician that came to my home was Tommy and he did an excellent job. We had a flood from our upstairs bathroom while everyone was out of the house and it flooded almost every room upstairs and then went through the ceiling and damaged our kitchen, family room and lower bathroom. Tommy came with another technician. They were both dressed very well, clean cut and the first thing he did was give me his card with his direct number on it. He then asked if he could walk through the home with me and he showed me all the areas that were wet and how far up the walls the water had gone. He used a moisture reading tool and he took plenty of photos so my insurance company could see. He explained what the process of getting my home dry would be and what exactly he would do and the time frame he thought it would take. He made sure that I was completely in the loop of everything his team was doing and the entire team were very considerate of our home and our belongings. Tommy went as far as meeting my insurance adjuster back at my home even though it was scheduled during a time that he wasn't supposed to be here. Tommy made sure to keep me in the conversation with my adjuster and himself. I would highly recommend this company should anyone I know suffer from water damage and I kept his card in case I ever need their company again for my own home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
