Adriano exceeded my expectations in refinishing our custom kitchen cabinets which were about 12 yrs old. They literally look brand new! He even rescued two cabinets that were messed up in a previous refinish attempt. Adriano is clearly a very talented craftsman who cares deeply about the quality of his work. He even gave me some really good free advice for refinishing my kitchen table. I'd recommend him for any wood finishing project. I couldn't be happier with the quality of his work.

HandyRon was excellent! Always on time, on budget and is committed to getting the job done absolutely right. He's replaced light fixtures, hung new mirrored cabinets in the bathroom, mounted new large locking mailbox, IKEA furniture assembly, and assembled and hung cabinets in laundry room. I have hired him for multiple projects just in the last few days and he will be my first call for anything around the house going forward. He's fun to work with as well! I highly recommend Ron!

Roger put together a queen size Murphy bed from Costco for us at an extremely reasonable price. He was very professional, thorough, punctual, and talented! He is a perfectionist so made sure that everything was done correctly and looked great! He was more than willing to come back the very next day to help us with some other projects- building and hanging cabinets, assembling a toddler bed and hanging drapes and pictures. All A-plus work! I am looking forward to hiring him again to build a closet and mount TVs for us next!! I don't think there is anything Roger can't do, he's super skillfull! Would highly recommend him. :)

Houman did a wonderful job painting all of our bathroom cabinets and our hallway linen cabinets. He went out of his way to search for the right fitting hinges for our very old cabinets. He was also able to get the job done with very short notice. I will definitely call on him again for other home repair and project work.

Kevin Ghazarian worked with me on a variety of prominent projects at my home. In all aspects from budgeting, design, planning and organization of the construction schedule, he was a tremendous asset. On each home improvement he displayed exceptional qualities of creative-problem solving, fortitude as a leader and task-master and attention to detail in design and craftsmanship. I am very pleased on how well the projects turned out, which is due largely to his professional contributions. Highlights of projects are described as follows: 1. Interior painting of several rooms and kitchen. The design motif was a traditional Tuscani color scheme. The original and uniquely beautiful architectural elements such as the curved kitchen cabinets, wordolf walls, crown mouldings, bay windows and fire place mantel pieces were individually painted separate colors. This was challenging in its multi color design and tedious attention to painting the details. In two rooms alone there were 15 different colors used, all of which had to be the perfect color and hue. 2. Installation of wood floors. A beautiful distressed antique wood flooring was installed in the kitchen, pantry, bathroom and large family room. This involved subfloor demolition, removal and replacement, and the detailed installation of wood flooring and moulding. The hard, back breaking work required a number of workers managed by Kevin. As a result, the work flow was systematically optimized and “driven” until the project’s completion. Kevin was a relentless task master and has many skills as a talented worker. 3. Electrical rewiring of bathroom and hallway. The old wiring was faulty and insufficient and new wiring was pulled and replaced. All ceiling light fixtures, electrical outlets and switches were chosen and installed. A 3 way switch system was a necessity and was devised quickly and installed correctly to code by Kevin. This all required the knowledge and skill of a trained electrician. 4. Construction of exterior deck. This project involved much post production planning and design. “Trek” decking materials, sub deck foundations, metal piers, treated lumber of all sizes, and all the special screws and bolts needed to be estimated and purchased for this large construction project. Unlike a simple rectangular shape, this deck was complex in design with multiple angles, levels and steps. Cutting perfect angles and lengths of Trek decking were a necessity in order for this deck to turn out as provocative and beautiful as it did.

I got my furniture assembled from Mr. Vahe. There was a desk with a bookcase attached, a bed, kitchen cabinet, and an office chair. Assembling all these pieces too quite some time (about 5 hours), but the work was perfect. All the furniture was assembled well and they are sturdy. Although, there was a lot of cardboard pieces and thermocol pieces left behind, there was no screw left loose. Thanks! Would definitely hire him again if needed.

I would highly recommend Evan Herrera. He was on time, his prices were reasonable and completed the various jobs in a timely manner. We had a variety of jobs to complete, painting a screened in porch and closet, electrical work, tuck pointing, calking and even fixed the hinges on our kitchen cabinets. I would absolutely hire him again with no hesitation.

We hired Mitch to resurface our cabinets. When we bought our condo, the previous owner did a horrible job slapping an ugly orange/red coat of stain all over the place. Mitch came in and stripped the ugliness from the existing cabinets, and added a nice coat of paint with a color of our choosing. He also fixed the baseboards that were cracked and replaced the ones that were missing. The quality of work was outstanding, I couldn't have asked for a better job in comparison to the price. Mitch even refinished the over hood range, so it wouldn't be such an eye-sore with the new cabinet look and also added the new hardware we had purchased. Overall, I highly recommend Mitch for your next refinishing job.

David arrived on time and made quick work of installing 2 crystal light fixtures to replace the original ones in my master closet. I'm having a custom closet system installed soon and this lighting will complete the look. His pricing is reasonable and I will definitely use his services again and recommend him for all your handyman needs.

I had originally called RR Woodworks for a custom island that I needed done. I was impressed with the knowledge and craftmanship that I had received. Everything turned out perfect, from the design to the finish. Since then I have used him for custom shelves, a dining room table, and new cabinet doors. Very happy with his quality and finished works.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

Do you tip cabinet installers?

In general, home service providers such as electricians, plumbers and contractors are professionals who don’t expect tips. They expect to do a job for you for the specific price they quoted. Of course, they may appreciate a tip for a job particularly well done or for which they’ve gone beyond what’s normally expected, such as completing the project early or under budget. Even better than a tip, it’s always appropriate to leave a positive review online after a good experience.

Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

  • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
  • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
  • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
  • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

How much is custom cabinetry?

Custom cabinets can be built for any room, including bedroom closets and built-in armoires. Measured carefully and built precisely, custom cabinetry can increase storage and beautify any room. The national average for building custom cabinets ranges from $500 to $1,200 per linear foot. The cost is highly variable because there are so many styles, colors, glazes and other options. In general, the linear footage of the cabinets, the materials used to build them, and the cost of the labor will determine the cost. Solid wood costs more than plywood and wood veneer, and costs vary among different types of wood; maple and cherry cabinets are more expensive than pine. Glass-front cabinets can cost more, as can decorative hinges, handles and door pulls, which can cost $2-$45 each; choose carefully to stay within your budget and pull off the exact look you’re going for. Some carpenters also charge for installation, on average $100 per cabinet box. Additional molding and trim, such as crown molding at the ceiling, cost an average of $70 per 8-foot section, and adding finished ends to exposed cabinets averages $100-$200.
