I am impressed. We live in a high end home (I don't mean to sound pretentious, it's just that the components are problematic). Our HVAC unit is Geo-thermal. I have had many different companies out to address the same issue (no air in through the bedroom vent) and finally Tim has given us a couple of solutions. This is on-going but at least we know why. We also had a problem with the venting of an indoor grill in the patio room. He has remedied that issue to the extent possible without switching any major components. We will continue to work with him and hopefully the plan to increase the motor for that vent will eliminate the venting problem for the grill and installing air flow fans will increase cooling and heat for the bedroom. His pricing was very reasonable, probably competitive but it's not worth a penny if the issues cannot be resolved. That's why I highly recommend him. Hard worker! Did a few extra things...no charge.

My oven wouldn't heat and Mark diagnosed the problem as likely to be a faulty igniter. He showed up on time with the right parts and took care of everything. Excellent service, reliable response, and a very fair price. I highly recommend Mark for this and any other appliance work. I will be using him in the future for sure.

Michael is the best! I called Saturday afternoon and he came that evening! Diagnosed, gave a temporary fix, came back Monday and fixed it! Even did a check on the entire heat/cool system. AND he is a respectful, kind young man. I would call again and refer him whenever possible!

TopDawg rocks! They removed an old system of blowers pushing air over water-heated pipes in two separate attics just in time for winter. A high-efficiency gas furnace, unified duct work, and coils for a future central air system install was the right solution for my heating problems. This was difficult job as both attics are pitched and small, there are deep piles of loose insulation, old wiring was in the way, and there was an impossibly tight area in which they had to connect the two attics. Gary, Case, Arian (?), and the others were professional, very safety-oriented, and also fixed some other problems they found in the attics so we are both warm and safe now. The install with additional repairs were all within the original estimated bid too! Great job!!

I'm glad I found Notable Heating and Air who can install the wall mount range hood in our small 80's townhouse remodeled kitchen. The after installed of the wall mount range hood brightens up the entire look of the kitchen area. Mr. James is very knowledgeable, honest, reliable, and very reasonable prices. Did not charge when he had to run out for a part. Above and beyond service and we will definitely call again when we need help with other projects.

Our furnace stopped putting out heat late in the afternoon. He came out that evening, as promised. He diagnosed the problem and took the time to explain it to me. Unfortunately, the repair required special sensors for that model of furnace that were not available till the next morning. He showed up the next morning, after picking up the parts, as promised, and the problem was fixed. Don was professional, courteous, and even put on shoe covers. His prices for the service call and diagnosis were reasonable, and what he initially quoted.

I had my furnace go out in the middle of the night. The next morning I called Jared over to my home to see what was wrong with it. He found a crack in the igniter in my furnace. He recommended a tuneup and a replacement to get the furnace running and ready for winter. He was extremely professional did what he could to make sure that I had heat that day and didn't overcharge. I would definitely be using Jared again for any of my heating or cooling needs

We have had a recurring problem with our air conditioner and Greg was the first person to listen to what was happening and then work to isolate and fix the issue. Once he thought he found the leak he tested the system before he recharged the unit noting that he didn’t want to waste our money or the refrigerant if the system wasn’t fixed. I really appreciated that he took on the challenge and didn’t just try to sell us a new system. The unit is only 3 years old and without fixing the leak this always seemed like a foolish option. I am so glad I found someone willing and able to fix our problem.

Michael, the owner of Goodfellas, came out and did a VERY thorough estimate for my A/C project. He actually measured my windows and doors and suggested placing a return air duct in my basement which no other estimator did. He took the time to make sure I understood everything and took the information to his office and spec'd the proper equipment for my home. Goodfellas provided me a very fair price for the equipment and labor. He showed up with an installer, Jay and also had an assistant. Very neat and clean installation and very professional at every step. I received great financing terms. They went over and above and I will gladly recommend Goodfellas to everyone looking to do a heating and cooling project. Thank you Michael!

Chris replaced my hot water heater and 50-60 year old boiler with an on-demand combination unit. He went above and beyond in every aspect of the project (including re-routing some radon venting that the radon guy had put right in the middle of my porch.). Throughout the process, he treated my house as if it were his own and was incredibly considerate to my family. It was a cold week when he replaced it and the day he made the official swap, he stayed until 11 PM to make sure the boiler was functioning so my family was not without heat that night. At the very end, he even got a swiffer and mopped the entire kitchen floor where he had walked through the back door. I give Chris my 100% recommendation.

We needed central air conditioning for our new home in Castle Rock and we interviewed several HVAC companies before making a decision. We received quotes from: Southwest Heating & Cooling, All Seasons Mechanical, Mr. Cool Heating & Cooling, Parker Heating and Air, and Blue Flame Heating & Air Conditioning. Out of the five businesses, we decided to hire Justin from Blue Flame for the following reasons: 1) Justin was extremely responsive to both phone and e-mail. (I actually found BlueFlame through Thumbtack, and Justin replied almost immediately after I posted the job early on a Sunday morning). 2) Justin had excellent communication, and always called in advance to let us know that he was on his way. 2) Justin did not try to upsell us on equipment that we did not need. 3) The quote that Blue Flame provided was very competitive compared to competitors. 4) Justin actually took the time to come back and perform a free heat load calculation on our house before we even hired him. Only one other vendor did this and they were not nearly as thorough as Justin was. 5) Blue Flame was the only Rheem dealer, and his competitors could not say anything bad about the Rheem brand of air conditioners. By contrast, Trane dealers claimed that Goodwin was unreliable, and Goodwin dealers claimed that Trane was both over-priced and had poor compressor motors. I don't know if either of those claims can be substantiated, but my online research indicated that Rheem units were very reliable. 6) The estimate, heat load calculation, and work order from Blue Flame were all provided electronically, and contained thorough documentation of the work that was performed. Justin used an iPad to document his work as he went and quickly published the results online. Although Justin is licensed in Douglas County, he was not licensed in Castle Rock. Normally this would be a deal breaker, but given the reasons we decided to hire Justin over his competitors, we decided to just pull the permit ourselves as homeowners. (Note: In Castle Rock, this is done entirely online, costs $50, and is issued in under 24 hours). I and am happy to report that Blue Flame passed the town's inspection and that all work was completed according to code. I did use Sun Dog Electric for the electrical work, so I cannot comment on the quality of the electricians that Blue Flame normally employs, but I am sure they would also do fine. We had Justin install a central humidifier for us as well, which his competitors were not even sure would be possible given the small space in our utility closet (see pictures on Yelp). Justin was able to fit an advanced Honeywell unit into the system just fine. Although I won't know how well it will work until this winter, I am confident that we will be very happy with it. Justin took the time to explain how the new air conditioning system works, as well as the humidifier, and the required maintenance for both units. He demonstrated their operation, and provided both manuals to us. In addition, Justin recommended an annual system check, which he can perform for only $49. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with the quality of installation and service that was provided by Justin from Blue Flame. If you are currently in the market for a new A/C system or furnace, need repairs, or just maintenance performed, you can stop researching and just call Blue Flame. They're competitively priced, have good products, and provide excellent customer service. What more can you ask for?

I found tons of black particles in our hot water. I called Sys-co and they were here in two hours for a free diagnostic assessment. Turns out my flex hoses on the water heater had to be replaced. The plumber came early he next morning, took off his boots when walking on carpet, and replaced the hoses with reliable cooper pipes to solve the problem. In and out in under an hour, including clean up. Quality workmanship, too. Very polite and professional young man. I have a new favorite plumber! Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
