Rob B says, "We had an unfortunate emergency and it created a flooded basement. I called around to a few places and found restoration one to be incredibly responsive and quick to get out to my property as well as very thorough in the analysis. The gentlemen came out to our house and worked tirelessly throughout the day and into the evening however They were a little bit careless in the removal of our baseboards and cutting into our carpet. They cut across our big room vertically and so now were stuck with a seam there. This would have been easily averted have they cut a little further down maybe 5 feet where the couch lays. The other issue was that they removed all the baseboards even though they were not all damp, and tthey did not cut the baseboard tops well and left a lot of damage to the drywallThey definitely appeared to be in a hurry And focused too much on demolition.Lastly, the only other slight discrepancy was with how much the job came to in the end. It wasnt too big of a deal and it was somewhat expected so this is a pretty minimal change but I just felt it shouldve been handled slightly different.Aside from those issues they did the work that needed to be done and when they were finished they also had additional contacts that I was able to call that continued to save me money on the rebuilding of the basement. We ended up saving our carpet and having to reinsert new pad which saved us thousands of dollars the people that did the carpet even shampooed the carpets for us so it kept the original softness that we thought we would lose. The last thing we are working on now is reinstalling all brand new baseboards and doing a lot of drywall repair.I know if I was going to have this happen again I would definitely still contact the same company - Restoration 1 - but I would just be a little bit more clear on the overall costs and probably mention to be a little more careful with what they do as far as demo.I do appreciate restoration one for all the work they did do and I feel like 4 out of 5 stars is an honest representation of how everything went down."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does demolition cost?

Demolition services cost $800, on average, with a cost range between $644 and $1,000. Demolishing your kitchen or bathroom may cost around $1,000 or more, depending on its size and the amount of work involved. However, demolishing a house can cost up to $30,000 (or more).

Contacting contractors is the best way to find out how much demolitions services cost in your area. That's because there are several factors that play into the total cost. The first is the size of your house, property or structure. Smaller homes that can be demolished with a single excavator will cost less than larger homes that may require more equipment and personnel, as well as more waste disposal fees. Also, labor rates will vary depending on your region.

How much does it cost to demolish and clear a house?

On average, it costs between $3,000 and $35,000 to demolish an entire house. Demolition also involves a number of factors that will influence the cost. House demolition pros will factor in the location of the demolition site, as well as whether they’re partially or completely tearing down the structure. They will also charge for outbuildings that need to be demolished, as well as dump fees for disposing of the waste.

How hard is demolition work?

If you’re not a professional, demolition work can be difficult, taxing and strenuous — not to mention dangerous, particularly when extensive precautions aren’t taken.

Demolition involves an understanding of structures and how buildings are built. This allows workers to understand the potential consequences of tampering with or removing things like walls, beams and other structures. Demolition also involves the use of heavy equipment like excavators. Dangers include falling debris, explosions, dust and other risks like collapsing ceilings and floors.

Who do I hire to get my home or property demolished?

If you choose to have your house torn down by machinery, you will need to hire a demolition contractor or company. These jobs require the use of heavy machinery like excavators, wrecking balls, bulldozers and more. The waste will then be scooped up and placed in dumpsters, which are hauled away by trucks. Another type of demolition is done by hand, and this service can leave you with salvageable parts to reuse in another home.

Search for demolition professionals on Thumbtack, and make your decision based on their customer ratings, reviews, project photos and cost estimates.

How long does it take to tear down a house?

This depends mostly on the size of the house and the complexity of operating on the worksite. Generally, you can expect a house teardown to take between one and several days. When you’re discussing your demolition project with potential local contractors, also ask them how long the project will take.

What's the difference between demolition and excavation?

Demolition is the act of tearing down a structure, like a house or building. It has its own name because the process itself is a skilled trade. Demolition crews must know how to safely and effectively bulldoze or tear a house down, how to handle different materials and occasionally even how to salvage certain materials from the house.

Excavation is the use of excavators to perform manual work like digging, trenching and tunneling. It also often involves surviving the ground, removing topsoil and clearing rocky surfaces.
