Emailed one day, onsite the next, repairs done within 48 hours. Couldn't ask for better. Went the extra effort to find everything that was wrong, that, despite the price it ended up costing, will hopefully save in emergency repairs in the future. Tim explained in basic terms what's wrong/why it's wrong/how to fix/what needs to happen and worked with me to find an appropriate solution that was going to work for me and my budget. Showed up on time, kept things clean, and was friendly to work with. While I'm hoping that takes care of the problems for a while, I'd hire again and recommend for others who need repairs/replacement for furnace, water heater or AC work.

Alex was very knowledgeable and personable. He showed up on time and charged exactly what he quoted. He went the extra mile and showed me how many evaporative cooler worked and how to maintain it. He provided me with a detail description and pictures of what need to be done and a price of what it would cost. He even check out my furnace and water heater and let me there general condition. Very highly recommended.

I hired David for a few projects last summer when we were doing a bunch of updating. First he extended our gas line to the kitchen for our new gas range. He also replaced the A/C and then installed a new sink for us as well. His team was great--very friendly, professional and considerate. Some contractors seem like they want to get it done and get out, but they were obviously invested in doing it right and they responded to every special request we made. When the range didn't quite fit the gas line, David even came back to adjust it and did not charge for it. And he stayed in touch with me to make sure we got the A/C warranty stuff done right. I'll contact him again when we need help.

Eric did a fantastic job helping me install a new Rheem hybrid electric water heater. We were unconventionally changing from a gas water heater to an electric heater in order to move away from natural gas usage and depend more on our solar array. This meant that Eric had to work with our electrician to get everything set up in a day so we didn't go too long without water. He also had to cap off our old gas line. The install was done well, and quickly. I highly recommend Eric.

Joey and Chris are amazing! They gave me a really good which encompassed plumbing issues in two bathrooms plus the installation of a furnace and air conditioning. Every other HVAC and plumber that my husband and I tried to work with before where out of our budget. Not only did we get a really good deal from working with these guys; their quality of work is exceptional as well. I would highly recommend the Tipping Hat for your plumbing and HVAC needs.

I am happy with the service and installation provided by HVAC Plus. One job turned into two and then into a few more. I will have Rich Philbrick's crew back out in the spring for additional work as well. Rich installed our main home furnace, a hot water heater, a Generac generator, a garage gas heater, and a secondary furnace in the upstairs. Needless to say, I've seen a lot of Rich this year. We felt his prices were fair, the installations were done properly and once on the schedule, the jobs were completed in a timely manner. We are happy with the Amana products recommended which have the stainless steel tubular heat exchanger. It's nice to know we won't have to worry about replacement for a long, long time. There were also service companies Rich subcontracted with; Jay's Electric for wiring the generator, heating, and air, and a crane company that moved the generator to the backyard. Both were very good companies to work with. This makes it easier getting through a project when you know those recommended are qualified and produce quality work. I appreciate that a lot. Thanks Rich and to your HVAC Plus crew.

Our water heater died at 7 o'clock on a Thursday evening, right as we were about to give our toddler a bath. We called Brothers who said they could come out at 10am the following morning. They were right on time and extremely professional and courteous. They replaced our water heater for just under $3K (a 50 gallon) and the tech was incredibly informative about everything he was doing. Before he left, he made sure to go over the job -in detail- with us to ensure we understood what he'd done and that the job had been completed to our satisfaction. We were definitely happy with this service. Thanks!

I found tons of black particles in our hot water. I called Sys-co and they were here in two hours for a free diagnostic assessment. Turns out my flex hoses on the water heater had to be replaced. The plumber came early he next morning, took off his boots when walking on carpet, and replaced the hoses with reliable cooper pipes to solve the problem. In and out in under an hour, including clean up. Quality workmanship, too. Very polite and professional young man. I have a new favorite plumber! Thank you!

Lee was helpful in helping me choose which furnace to buy based on my requirements. Furnaces options and price ranges vary widely and so it can get a little complicated. Lee made it simpler. I found Oneguy's quote to be better than competitors. Once I made my choice, he arrived with his installer on time. It took a lot longer than I thought -- almost 2 days which made me realize there is a lot to installing a new furnace and mine was mostly a case of removing the previous "box" and putting in a new "box" that was about the same size. There was sheetmetal work to do to make it fit and because I got a new humidifier, there was a bunch more sheetmetal work to be done. The venting had to be replaced also because it was rusty inside. I chose to partially upgrade the A/C and this took extra time because my existing A/C unit had to be recharged with new coolant. And my gas line was leaking (a county energy audit had discovered this) and a valve was replaced. So even though it was just a box switch, there was a lot of work to be done! The furnace area looks great. The work is tidy. This is hard to describe. Everything just looks like it is where it should be. There's no metal bits sticking out. My brother who built his own home (including installing the furnace himself) looked it over and declared it a good job. Replacing one's furnace is hard work. It's best to do some upfront research. Consumer Reports online has some helpful educational material. And then there's getting quotes. It isn't easy as a consumer, but once I hired Oneguy, it got easier and it turned out great!

This is your next go to company. I needed a tank-less water heater and they gave me a great price, so I hired them and have no bad things to say. They came to the house looking professional and not like they were from some back alley. They got the job done quick, looks / works awesome, and it’s like they were never here except for the new equipment. Very Happy Customer!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
