Ashley is a very pleasant young woman who gave us a lot of information to help us in choosing design elements for our kitchen/ home update. She is very knowledgeable and exhibited a very good artistic sense. She offered ideas that were very helpful for us to understand and to implement her ideas. We would very highly recommend her and plan to consult her in the future. She filled the time we spent with her with professional ideas and a sensitivity to our tastes and circumstances.

Though I reside in New York City, my husband and I recently purchased a vacation home in Estes Park, CO. It's an older home but still has such natural beauty which I needed help showcasing. A friend of mine referred me to Donna with DecorReform. I figured it was worth giving an interior decorator a try because I literally didn't know where to begin but knew I wanted to have it all set before our next trip for Valentine's Day. I can't express enough gratitude to Donna. She simply nailed it in every way! We haven't even met in person but I made arrangements for her to have access to the house in our absence and although I haven't seen it in person, the pictures and video sent are priceless making it even more exciting to visit! Because of Donna's willingness to go above and beyond in a situation like this, I will be giving my husband the best Valentine's gift yet and I really owe her all the thanks!

Jen and Jessica exceeded all of my expectations. I moved into a new home and was overwhelmed with my ideas of what I wanted and how to even begin to start. Jen worked with me and we took it room by room. She understood what I wanted and incorporated my existing furniture. She understood that I needed this to be budget friendly and offered me options that looked high end. Jsquared is very connected and their sub contractors are easy to work with, affordable and professional. I think that it also important to note that they are timely. I have worked with other designers and I was the one that had to bug them to move the project along. There is nothing worse than having you home incomplete for months. With Jsquared, they kept the timeline and and stuck to it. In some cases, visions came to life in days, not weeks. I love my home. It is everything I imagined and more. I would recommend them for any scope of work. They have the experience, vision, and passion to make their clients very happy.

My wife and I used Lisa Demberg of Style Reboot to redecorate a 2 year old home we purchased. Although the house was basically brand new, much of the interior, including yellow walls throughout the house, were not our style. Lisa has a talent for assisting her clients with choosing color palettes, using their existing home furnishings, and finding a few new purchases to tie the whole look together. Lisa is also well connected to other interior design specialists within our community and she coordinated a kitchen cabinet redesign for us with a local woodworker whom we would never have discovered without her help! Lisa outlined a design plan and a timeline to prioritize projects and stayed within or under budget for all of our design needs. My wife and I highly recommend Style Reboot for any of your decorating needs - no project is too big or too small for Lisa to tackle!

I hit the jackpot finding Maurice! I bought a townhouse that needed some renovating. My original plan was to remove popcorn ceiling, remove wall paper, paint, remove tile floor and lay carpet, upgrade tiled fireplace and tiled window seat. I knew I would need to coordinate the different jobs, while sticking to a tight timeline of one month. I happened upon Superior Floors while looking for someone to remove tile. During our first phone call, I explained my plan and found out he could do all of my projects. I was ecstatic!! From the moment I met him, I could tell he was passionate and very knowledgeable about his job. He noticed the mismatched texture on the walls (two other painters didn't notice), gave suggestions, and was very creative in designing the fireplace. I added a few things to the project (install/wire ceiling fans, new flooring in the bathroom, upgrade interior doors) when we met and was assured they would be done in time. After they started working and I saw progress, I became excited and asked about doing a few other things that I had planned for the future during this renovation (new bathroom cabinets for both bathrooms, new countertops, new lighting fixtures, and granite countertops for the bathroom and kitchen). Though I knew I was adding more work and possibly delaying my timeline, he accepted the challenge. Maurice kept in constant contact throughout the entire project. He kept me within budget and he maintained my one month timeline, even with the added projects!! I was very lucky everything was delivered on time or early. The finished project is amazing and I love my "new" place! I have already had him back to make my laundry space more functional. He did a great job with this too! I will be hiring him again to retile the master shower and guest bath. He is personable, professional, and thorough. He does a fantastic job and does it right the first time, he does not cut corners. I really liked his excitement and design ideas throughout the project. I highly recommend Maurice with Superior Floors! It was my first experience with a contractor, and I couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Patra is a timeless Interior Designer. Not only does she have vision, but she can pull a room together from pieces already there or from other rooms and integrate them with new ideas/pieces. She is great with keeping the integrity of one's individual style while making the project timeless and fresh. We highly recommend Patra for all interior design needs. Most importantly, she should be brought on in the pre construction and architecture deign process. Her insight is valuable. Part is trustworthy, price conscious, and has excellent resources. We had 10year old patio furniture that was in good shape except for the fabric on the cushions. Laura came out to the house and helped us choose a new durable fabric for this set. She was very knowledgeable and offered great design input. She did a great job and was on time with the job completion. We will keep her in mind for future needs. Thanks Laura!

Lin has a great sense of humor. She wasn't put off by what she had to work with and has great taste. After spending years teaching middle schoolers (!), she went to UCLA's four-year program in interior design. Her clients are lucky.

I cannot say enough about Meg from Cherry Creek Interiors. She did an excellent job from listening to me about what I was looking for, to the design, helping with color choices- as I am horrible at it. Follow thru with the contractors and cabinet company. Her idea on reversing my main staircase will make such a difference. It truly opened up the entire space. Her work on the outside of my home was wonderful. The Riverstone on the front will look awesome with the beautiful large picture window she helped me envision. Cannot wait for the remodel to be finished.

About

I am a full-service interior designer - from concept to completion - making a vision a reality! I provide the following services: * space planning * selection of furnishings and finishes * lighting and color consultation * budget development * construction * project management My clients love my timeless design styles and that I'm keeping them within budget! Testimonials: Clients of Lynn Shannon Interior Design all speak highly of her interior design services: "I interviewed several designers. Lynn was the most in tune with my needs and my personality. She seemed to sense what was important to me. The process of working with Lynn was very interactive. She read my general "intent" and brought ideas that were always on target. She helped me narrow the choices to the best ones that fit with my budget and taste. Because Lynn "tuned in" to my sense of style, the process was very efficient for me..and time is a precious commodity. In addition, she did not impose ideas that were not aligned to my needs, but she also knew when to push the boundaries a bit so that the end result was not only "me" but better. Working with Lynn was an amazing experience. I consider her not only a great designer, but also a good friend. She is clearly well respected in the local design community, which allows her to bring the best in ideas into the design process." - Jacky Haynes "Kind, considerate and respectful of our needs—that was our first impression of Lynn. She has a plethora of resources, and all are professional, creative and reasonable. Her strengths include a dedication to detail and working within a budget. She’s fun to work with, creative and patient. Six years after last working with Lynn, I contacted her to update a few areas of my home and we picked up right where we left off. The house was gorgeous. She found beautiful rugs for my new wood floors, modernized the floral designs, updated the guest bathroom and registered a few cherished pieces of furniture, all within our budget." - Gerry Miale "Lynn worked alongside me on my downtown townhouse condo remodel. She was always gracious and patient while seeking to find the best solutions to each issue that presented itself. That she is well respected in the Denver design community was apparent in the manner in which she was received by her fellow designers at the Denver Design Center. Lynn handled all urgent matters with poise and ease. She is extremely organized and expeditious in her scheduling and bookkeeping. All in all, her professionalism prevailed throughout, producing a beautiful result in the very difficult environment of a multi-family residence." - Jo Shernoff "We had just bought a home in Evergreen and were moving there from Chicago, so we needed help to get the house ready. Our realtor suggested we contact Lynn shortly after she had finished working on the Parade of Homes at Tanoa. As we were still living in Chicago while the work was being completed, we needed someone with whom we could communicate effectively across the country, even though she didn’t know us personally. Lynn's demeanor with us was so positive that when we later built a new home in Evergreen she was involved with the contractor and architect in the timely completion of the project. We highly recommend her and plan on using her in our future moves." -Helen Markus "We had the occasion to visit the home of friends, which was furnished so beautifully that we asked the name of their interior designer. When we met Lynn, we were struck by her straightforward, professional-yet-friendly approach. She immediately picked up on our taste and was patient in listening to our design objectives. We had been feeling overwhelmed at the prospect of furnishing and decorating our larger home, but Lynn gave us the guidance and focus we needed to accomplish an integrated design that reflected the warm, welcoming look that we had hoped to achieve. Lynn melds expertise with approachability. The scope of her knowledge is incredible. She surrounds herself with only the finest artisans who all worked together to transform our house into the home we love. Our experience with her has been a blessing in our lives." - Darla Schwartz

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.
