Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to get the outside of your house painted?

You can expect to pay around $2,535 to get the outside of your house painted, though this cost will increase with larger house sizes (and decrease with smaller ones). The average hourly rate for exterior painters is $45 and ranges from $25-$75.

Wood, brick, stucco, vinyl, aluminum and stone each have their own set of demands. Contact exterior painters near you to get a detailed cost estimate for your house.

How many coats of paint does the exterior of a house need?

Your house’s exterior will likely need two coats of paint. With two coats, your house will look more even and solid in color and will be better protected from moisture and the elements. The painting should always occur over a primed and well-prepared surface.

What colors should I paint my house exterior?

You have many options when it comes to paint colors. For example, an off-white creates a traditional look, and it looks great with a bright door to contrast it. Yellow is a happy color that, while light blue is reminiscent of an oceanfront style. Gray houses are also on trend, providing a classy and neutral tone that remains warm and inviting.

How often should you paint your house's exterior?

Expert opinion is mixed, but the general range is five to 10 years. However, this depends on many factors. Houses in harsh climates with extreme temperatures, lots of dust or ice or intense sunlight may need more frequent paint jobs than those in temperate climates. Also, wood houses will need new paint more often due to the changes within the wood itself. You should also consider painting the outside of your house if you plan to sell it.

What is the best exterior house paint?

Acrylic paints are generally considered good options for today’s home exterior paint jobs. You can also choose an oil-based or latex (water-based) paint. Also, look into specialty paints for your doors, roof, gutters, siding and other exterior surfaces.

What should I look for when choosing a painter?

When choosing a painter, pay attention to online reviews and ratings. Reviews with pictures are especially valuable, as these showcase the painter’s work. It’s also important to check whether your state requires licenses for painters — if it’s required, your contractor should be able to present their license.

Finally, compare estimates and quotes from multiple painters near you. Take into consideration what each one guarantees with the job, including factors like higher-quality paint, extensive preparation and a good warranty.

Should I pressure wash my house before painting?

Pressure washing your siding before painting is an efficient way to clean your house in preparation for receiving new paint. However, it must be done correctly to avoid causing water damage or damaging the siding itself.

Depending on the PSI rating of your washer, you should stand far away enough from your house to avoid removing paint or etching into the siding itself. Also avoid injecting water behind the siding, which typically occurs when spraying upwards at a low angle.

When in doubt, consider hiring a pressure washer near you before your painter paints your home’s exterior. Or, contact the best painters near you to see if they offer pressure washing services as well.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a painter during the COVID-19 pandemic?

To stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, it’s important to use virtual tools for communication. If you’re hiring local interior and exterior painters, contact them to see if they’ll set up a video call to assess your project. During this call, they can get a feel for what needs to be done and may be able to give you a price quote.

Discuss potential plans and strategies for getting the work done safely. And ask whether they accept virtual or digital payments.

Are there ways to be safe if I hire a painter when social distancing?

If you hire a painter, maintain at least 6 feet of distance at all times, sanitize involved surfaces and spaces, and use digital payment services instead of cash or a check. When contacting and consulting with a painter, make sure you discuss a plan that will keep everyone safe while the painter works on your project.

Does a painter need to enter my home?

If you’re hiring an exterior painter, the painter will likely not need to enter your home. But for interior paint jobs, the painter will need to enter your home.

When talking to potential painters, discuss a strategy to make sure you and the painter(s) stay safe while they’re completing the job in your home. Or, you might want to discuss scheduling the paint job at a later date.

My house exterior paint job is beautiful. All the houses in my cul-de-sac have been repainted since the July 2016 hail storm. My paint job is by far the best. These guys were in and out in an extraordinarily short period of time. Truly impressive! Thank you All Painting Plus for the outstanding job!

This review is based solely on price. While I was never given an actual estimate in writing (even thought they said they would have it to me 10 days ago) they did tell me it would be between 7k and 8k to paint the exterior of our home. The five star painting estimate is DOUBLE the price of 5 other estimates I received. My advice is do your research and get several estimates before you go with any one business.

My wife and I are very satisfied That we chose LoCOI Paint. Their representative, Chad responded to our search to have the exterior of our house painted. He on arrived on time. he was very respectful and knowledgeable. He told us about LoCOI Paint, their mission and the quality of work they provide to all of their clients. He listened to our vision of what we wanted. After walking the property with and making a few constructive suggestions. He then went on to do his measurements. Within a half an hour. We had our estimate. It was reasonable, and with an a budget, so we moved forward with the project. I contacted by Molly, the project manager for my job. A date was set to start the project. The crew arrived on time. The were respectful to me and my family, and our property. they cleaned up everyday and never left a mess. Hugo, the site supervisor and his team knew what they were doing. Very, Very professional. the project took only three days, and Molly, the project manager made several visits to our house each day making sure everything was going smoothly. We were very satisfied with the job they done. The job was completed today and already several of our neighbours have commented and are quite impressed. We would like to thank everyone at LoCOI Paint for the wonderful job they did in helping us see our vision.

My husband and I hired Anthony's Painting, May 2017 for exterior paint on our home . Biggest mistake ever. My husbands a Vet and I thought we could help out a Vet. The first day of the 2 men crew being there, I pulled up to my house for lunch ,and the "lead" guy was blocking my drive way, and I had to wait for him to realize I wanted to park in MY drive way , they guy did not look professional at all , he looked like a "thug". One of the painter was leaning on one of my vehicles, and the other painter had his shirt off VERY UNPROFESSIONAL, this is just the first day in.At the end of the first day, the painters did not clean up there was paint chips all over the place, (I have grandchildren and dogs) The second day there were paint chips in my dogs water bowl and all over the outside kennel. The crew scraped the house, and left big dips, grooves, holes (i don't know what you would call it) all over the house. They said they filled in the dips with caulking on the house and applied the painted over them, leaving the dips very VISIBLE. Dripped( I don't know what) all down the steps on the porch it might be paint thinner????.I spoke with Steve the lead, and told him how unhappy I was about the way the house looked ,He said due to the age of the house that's the best they could do. I am no painter but I am sure that wood can be replaced, I was never asked if we wanted the wood to be replace. They did not fill in the holes that were made from scraping the house.A week in a half into the job, the owner Anthony came out to do a walk around ,I pointed out several things that were wrong with the house. The holes in the house the paint that was dripped all over the brick on the house, which Anthony stated that the painted dripped on the brick was prior to his painters ( I have lived in this house for 10+ years ) I would have noticed paint drippings prior to Anthony's painting company coming on my property. Anthony (the owner) stated that the holes in the house from the painters scraping need to be fixed. He would have the painters come back on Monday 22,2017 or Tuesday May 23, 2017.Friday May 19th, 2017 when the temperature was below 40 degrees, I had painters at my house re-caulking and painting????????? Not a painter but know it has to be warmer than that.No Anthony though. I had his secretary Amy show up at my residence wanting to do a walk around. At this point I am done with this company, nothing was done as stated, I still have big dips on my house , I still have paint all over my brick siding, paint chips, brick on the house painted that should have NEVER been painted, oil stains on stepping stones. While Amy (secretary) and Steve (lead) were at my home to do another walk around Amy stated she did not bring my warranty with her????????? Or a receipt book to write me a receipt of monies collected??????????????????. Thank God I have cameras and she was being video record when taking the cash payment.

Anthony's crew was very professional. We did a change of color on the exterior of our house, plus stain of the outside of our fence. They were very patient in our lengthy decision making of the right color; we went through 10 colors! They came and put the colors on the house for us every time we changed our mind. They were very patient with the payment process as it was also lengthy and required extensive paperwork though my insurance company. They came back to finish the job of painting a replacement garage door after delivery and installation were delayed. They worked around my fiance's sleep schedule since he works night. I would highly recommend Anthony's painting. He was very easy to speak and discuss the process with. We have had several compliments on the new color and quality of the workmanship from our neighbors. He was not the cheapest estimate but we felt he was the best value. We were not disappointed.

We were excited to work with this company because it was a local and highly rated company, however, when our scheduled project was to begin 1 Dec with the exterior small deck re-stain and sealing and then 2-4 Dec interior 1st floor painting. However on the 1st, no one showed up. Unfortunately, I had a last minute surgery but communicated this with the company and we were still going to keep things on schedule. The team finally showed up later in the day on the 2nd with their small children. Because the exterior work took place in the evening we could not see the quality until the next morning? The team only put 1 coat on our deck and it was clear some areas were lighter than others, we simply asked if the team was going to put on a 2nd quote, they finally did, but later the following day. The following morning, we were told by text and in person that their team would be at our home at 9:30 to start the interior portion of the job. My husband took time off to be home for the crew, and move the furniture and pictures as requested, again no one showed up and no one responded to our calls or emails until later that day. Our patio is still not finished either and after this company finally responded to our texts that they didn’t know where their team was but we can remove the plastic and take from our deck ourselves and that they will come sometime next week after the 7th. When we asked for a remedy or refund the owner of the company then began to accuse us of rushing them and intimidating them because we felt we needed to take legal action based on their communication (or lack there of) and continually not showing up or pushing our scheduled project back. That was it, the lack of communication, no shows and the rude emails and texts to us stated we were rushing them when they were not even showing up left us feeling as though they are over leveraged in jobs and didn’t care about their business. We paid more in a deposit then what work has been accomplished and will file a consumer complaint if this company does not refund our money. Be careful, if your schedule isn’t super flexible I would not hire this company.
