Service was great. Chris was very responsive. Gave an hour window of time for arrival and called when he was 20 minutes away. He arrived within the window and got the job done promptly. Very happy with the service.

So John did a lot of work for us. His craftsmanship is very good. The only thing I wasn't happy with was the actual install of our windows, but his workers did that. One window was damaged going in and when I asked the worker about it, he was defensive and combative. After the windows were installed however, I only worked with John. He did all of the casing around the windows which turned out beautiful. He remodeled our master bath and half bath with marble tile and also did a beautiful job. His tile work is very good. He really pays attention to detail. He cut and installed our baseboard. He installed new plumbing, bathroom cabinets, mirrors, he installed outdoor lighting, he really did a ton of work. I was very happy with all of the work he did. Any problems that may have come up, he addressed immediately. I can't say enough nice things about John.

I just had my deck , patio slab, and sliding patio doors project done through Red Earth Construction. Family team of Jim, Jason, and Jim Sr. I would use them again. I'm very cautious of who I would use as I have terrible experiences working with contractors in the past, losing money and having uncompleted poor projects.. Each time I have learned what not to do, but having met Jim who I went through the process was great. You get a sense of trust and confidence working with him. I had a budget and I did get other quotes but they came in with the best quote including with the 2 patio doors (custom done through Sunrise). The deck and patio slab took a full week to get done, and sliding doors were put in after. All of their crews that did the specific projects did a beautiful job, I was most impressed with Jerry their window/door installer. They did and great job retro fitting the beautiful sliding patio doors with the blinds . Meticulous on housekeeping , and detail . I will go through Red Earth Construction again on different home projects that can do. The family are all great, professional and easy to work with.

Great workmanship and great value. Sav-a-Lot is willing to replace one window at a time vice having to replace all or a high number of windows which most big name companies require per service call, this is great for those on a budget. Would definitely recommend and will use again. Did a great job on our gutters too!

Karen power washed, sanded, and stained three redwood decks, including the railings. The deck railings were quite weathered since they had been exposed to the sun for several years with no maintenance, and Karen spent a long time removing the old, weathered wood and sanding down the top rails to get them looking good. This was a large job, taking 3 days to complete, and when it was finished the decks look as good as new. Her next job was painting door and window sills that had sustained hail damage, and once again, Karen’s work was exemplary. The sills were carefully sanded and prepped for painting, and the job was completed in less time than anticipated with excellent results. Karen is a hard and meticulous worker with an eye for details, and the results of the jobs she has undertaken for me have exceeded expectations. She is self directed, needing only a rough outline of the nature of the job to be done, and will carry it through to completion without need for any supervision. All work she has done has been excellent and has taken less time than I expected, and I will certainly call on her again the next time I need any work done.

I had some screens done from my house that my puppy destroyed. Hansen Glass suggested "pet proof" screen mesh for replacement. Went with that. Prompt service. Fair pricing. Their new office and showroom are very nice. Thanks for the help.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
