He did an outstanding job. We had a plumbing problem in our kitchen. He helped us to find a new faucet for the kitchen sink and he came three time to complete this project. He was punctual and a real professional.

Forest and his team did a great job of installing our kitchen lighting and backsplash. We asked them to come back to tile a kitchen wall. Both jobs were done professionally and in a timely manner.---C. Anderson

Papa’s Home Improvement: Awesome The owner, Josiah is a professional in every sense of the word. He has worked with us on a number of project, kitchen, plumbing, deck remodel...he installed custom lighting; designing the most beautiful lighting style on our pergola. (See photo) When he was working on our kitchen remodel, he did some adjustments to our plumbing the make it easier for my husband and I to access the main water cut-off for the whole house in case of an emergency and a year later at about 2 a.m. in the morning, our 20 year old hot water tank broke and was flooding the utility room and guest bedroom but we were able to go into the kitchen and turn off the main water line, which saved hour home from flooding during the night. We called him and he came the next morning and installed a new water tank and some special additions to eliminate the possibility of future flooding. His work is surpurb. We found him to be timely, consistent, dependable, does quality work, pays attention to details. He's trustworthy, never left us waiting and wondering if he would be on site each day, he is committed and takes his job seriously. My husband and I fell in love with this young man. We were scammed a few years ago and Josiah & his Uncle, restored our faith in mankind. I would recommend him without hesitation. His charges are reasonable and his work is worthy of his pay. If you don't want to take a chance on getting the right contractor...I suggest you call Papa’s Home Improvement to eliminate the worry. We miss Papa's Home improvement here in Denver so writing this review was bittersweet! J'Mae Stewart Denver, CO

Iggy was great to work with, he is very knowledgeable and even came up with some ideas that I didn't think of that worked out very well! Had a kitchen remodel that needed electrical changes throughout and Iggy was accessible, available and respectable from the beginning of this process. He went out of his way to get one little part that he thought was necessary to make my project more complete. Highly recommend Iggy for any electrical needs.

Ian was prompt doing the repairs. He also communicated with me regarding a small delay. The walls are faux painted and Ian did a good job matching the paint and design. His texturing in one room was a little heavier and the original walls. I solved the problem by hanging a iron grate type fixture over it. I would recommend Ian for painting and carpentry repairs. If matching texturing and faux painting is desired, perhaps getting a sample would be nice to have. Ian was polite, industrious and did a great job cleaning up.

I needed to have an old kitchen faucet replaced. Chris was very knowledgeable and professional through the entire installation and he did the work correctly the first time and at the price quoted. He took the time to answer any questions I had and explained everything he was doing during the replacement. He even took the time to look at an additional plumbing issue I was having and offered to do the work but also took the time to show me how I could do it myself. I will definitely call Chris again for any future work and would highly recommend him to anyone needing repairs at their home.

Charlie did a great job of taking my ideas and actually designing a beautiful mantel piece. He was very good at figuring out how to make the design work for the space and current "drywall mantel." I would hire Charlie again for any woodworking projects in the future.

Chris helped solve a major crisis involving sub par kitchen flooring and was able to fix the problem, lay new fiber board and expertly lay new tile. Additionally, he fixed moldy sheetrock and a leak in the kitchen sink. I couldn't have completed my house remodel without him. On top of all of his expert work, he is also a gentleman to work with—a super guy.

Though I reside in New York City, my husband and I recently purchased a vacation home in Estes Park, CO. It's an older home but still has such natural beauty which I needed help showcasing. A friend of mine referred me to Donna with DecorReform. I figured it was worth giving an interior decorator a try because I literally didn't know where to begin but knew I wanted to have it all set before our next trip for Valentine's Day. I can't express enough gratitude to Donna. She simply nailed it in every way! We haven't even met in person but I made arrangements for her to have access to the house in our absence and although I haven't seen it in person, the pictures and video sent are priceless making it even more exciting to visit! Because of Donna's willingness to go above and beyond in a situation like this, I will be giving my husband the best Valentine's gift yet and I really owe her all the thanks!

Jerald has helped restore our 110 year old denver square - and the transformation has been seamless! He created doors and frames to match the 110 year old doors and frames, he built custom book shelves to match the 110 year old built in hutch. and he has built a custom front gate and countless other projects. Its impossible to tell which is the new build and which is 110 years old! We are grateful we found him. As good of a carpenter that he is, he's an even better person!

James and Gina responded very quickly and came out for an estimate. James has very good ideas and is very engaging. He has MANY years of experience and is very knowledgeable. While he came out for our kitchen we discussed deck designs! He is very professional and his company can handle any job. He is well versed in trending styles and designs. The estimate was right in line with other contractors. An excellent family-run/owned company.

Made Right did a complete overhaul of my kitchen pantry. It's a large space, about 15ft long by 8ft wide. They outfitted it with shelves and created a useful design. They worked with me to understand what my needs were and then came up with a plan that fit those needs and I signed off, two days later I had the most beautiful pantry! It was a waste of space before and now I walk in and smile because it's completely transformed my storage. It's the most efficient use of space ever! I can't believe I lived with a terrible closet in my kitchen for so long. They were also really easy to work with and very cool. Down to earth, solid guys, I've intro'd them to other friends who need work done.

We selected H&M Designs for high-end (high quality wood and fine woodworking) custom cabinetry that I would paint/decorative paint. I am a decorative finisher and know the value/quality of competing cabinetry makers. Heather connected with me right away, and fit my need for some design assistance, and the follow up with cad drawings for our review and approval. She was extremely diligent in all steps of the process. We were very clear that quality materials and workmanship were the most critical factors, combined with elegant design. The pricing came in and was very fair for our expectations. Marvin, the cabinet maker, then came out to measure and really analyze the spaces. He delivered the cabinets (2 formal dining room china cabinets with uppers, lowers and inside rollout drawers) within a month. WOW! I am extremely particular, and his work is stunning. He spent a couple of days doing the installation, including applying perfectly-proportioned crown moulding, and although some of our walls are not square, he took this all into consideration upfront, and there is very little caulking around the cabinets to be done. He built the cabinetry to be painted in maple, and the other cabinets are beautiful cherry and will be stained. We are thoroughly pleased. If you are looking for top-notch quality with reasonable pricing (definitely not the most expensive bid) for this type of product, you will be extremely pleased with H&M. I would highly recommend them.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

    What do general contractors charge?

If you’re doing a home remodel, building a new home or embarking on a commercial building project, you’ll hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to oversee and execute construction projects. Each construction project is unique; even two duplicate homes built on lots next door to each other could have different construction costs due to factors like different excavation costs when building the foundation. Since each project is unique, many general contractors make bids on potential construction projects. These bids can then break down to a per square foot cost that encompasses the labor of all the workers needed for the job, materials, the scope of work, and any equipment needed. Materials and finishes make a major difference in your cost per square foot. For example, choosing standard kitchen tiles at $3 per square foot will result in a lower total project cost than imported marble tiles that cost $63 per square foot. Where you live will also affect how much general contractors charge, as labor and the cost to do business can cost less in many regions than in high-cost areas like New York or San Francisco. Here are some examples of average costs general contractors typically charge in various regions:

    • Home addition in San Francisco: $250-$270 per square foot.
    • New home construction in Knoxville, Tennessee: $100-$200 per square foot.
    • Kitchen remodel in Tennessee: $40-$80 per square foot, depending on finishes.
    • Bathroom remodel in Vancouver, Washington: $110-$170 per square foot.
