How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

  • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
  • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
  • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
  • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
  • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
  • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
  • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
  • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Joseline was incredible! I had reached out to several makeup artists in the Denver area before an event and she was the first to respond with the utmost professionalism and enthusiasm. She was punctual, organized, and accommodated all my requests with the makeup and hair look I wanted to achieve. I was especially impressed with her talent in eyeshadow and eyebrow techniques. Will totally hire her again!!

Robin was kind, professional, friendly and is an incredibly talented makeup artist. I was extremely fortunate to have found her for 2 clients I had booked photos sessions for. With less than 24 hours notice, she was able to accommodate my requests without any issues. Will absolutely be working with Robin in the future.

I cannot recommend high enough to hire Katie to be your wedding makeup artist. She was my best vendor - she was so relaxed and flexible in the weeks leading up to the wedding when I was all over the place. Katie did a wonderful job on my airbrush makeup, it looked glowy and flawless. It was exactly what I wanted. We also tested some other looks and she listened to all the tweaks I wanted. I loved having her; she is such an amazing and genuinely kind person to have around!

Susan is a consummate professional and lovely human being. She began adding value well before we met, providing tips and recommendations around my skin care that made a clear difference in the effect of the makeup. (Among other things, she recommended a facial, frequent hydration, products containing hyaluronic acid, and rest.) She was also good enough to schedule a free foundation match the day before the event, and the morning of, she showed up as planned and made me look amazing. I was so happy to give my then-fiancé such a beautiful surprise. (Note to brides: It's good you're here. You do NOT want to go DIY on this one. Hiring a professional makeup artist is one of the things I'm proudest of about our day, and I'm so glad I chose Susan.) I will add this: as a woman of color, it is still all-too-common to find oneself looking chalky in photos when wearing poorly-applied makeup. I'd considered going the airbrushing route, but Susan's quality products and artistic touch achieved the same effect. She is also a joy to be around and put me at ease (I was a bundle of nerves). She was so respectful and so kind. I'm truly grateful to have met her and would gladly recommend her to anyone. I recently finished my hair and makeup trial with envision your I do and I can firmly say I will NOT be giving them my business for my wedding day and I would STRONGLY recommend against giving them yours due to these 3 factors. During my trials they exhibited a complete lack of costumer service, they used cheap makeup products you could pick up at a drug store, and they exhibited terrible time management. This was a paid service that was meant to nail down the look for my wedding day, and instead of finishing the job, I was told that they didn’t have time to finish the service I had paid for. They said we could talk about it later and yet 3.5 days later there is no follow up. I booked a hair trial first and Debra was late. We agreed on 9 am and she was about 30 minutes late. When I booked my trial I had let her know that i have A LOT of hair. That’s what I usually tell stylists to give them a warning. On top of being late, she wildly underestimated the time it would take to complete my updo. My bridal shower was scheduled for after the trial so I really needed this trial to be done on time. I asked her how long would it take to do my hair and she estimated about 35 minutes. About 2 hours later we were done. Not only was she late, not only was her time estimate completely off, and not only was I late to my own bridal shower but she was also very curt with me as I tried to give her feedback during my trial. And in the end she did not accomplished the look I wanted. I decided to book a makeup trial and give them the benefit of the doubt. I booked my appointment with Samantha. I liked Samantha and I thought we were on the same page about the look i wanted. I showed her pictures and she verbalized the look I was going for. I had reservations about the makeup look as the trial went on but we addressed those issues. When it was time to do the airbrushed foundation I was super excited because many of my friends had it done for their wedding and it looked very good. When she did the foundation, the whole look just fell apart. My face looked cakey, streaky, and grey. It was a super uneven application. Not to mention I looked like a zombie. I couldn’t even recognize myself and I kept mentioning that but I felt ignored. I was told the look would come together when she put on the setting spray that is meant for theater actors. As she moved onto my eyes, I noticed the bottom liner was very dark. When I mentioned this, Debra chimed in and said “At this point, she cannot fix this. We have another engagement and we have to go.” I had to ask them to put the setting spray on and some lipstick bc my lips were covered with foundation. This is not a good business. Definitely not customer focused. My eyes were tearing up the last 10 minutes of the appointment and they just ignored me. I went straight to sephora to see if they could fix my makeup since my bachelorette party was that afternoon. As soon as I sat down to wipe it all off, MANY makeup artists at sephora commented on the poor job that was done. They said the foundation did not match my skin, I looked ashy, and it was very uneven and cakey. Thankfully sephora was able to fix my foundation quickly. I would NOT recommend this business for your wedding day. The trials were paid services yet it felt very rushed and we never nailed down the look I was going for.
