Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost for a photographer for a wedding?

Finding the right wedding photographer can make a big difference for your ceremony. Nationally, the average wedding photographer’s price ranges from $800 to $1,000, but costs can be much higher in areas like Chicago, New York or Los Angeles where some couples spend $2,000 to $5,000 or more for the photographer they want.

Factors that can affect your wedding photographer prices include the photographer’s reputation and experience. Heavy hitters can command top rates, especially during wedding-season weekends. Day of the week also affects your cost. You may get a $200 discount on wedding photographer prices if you get married on a Friday in November rather than a Saturday in June.

Time onsite is also an important cost factor. Hiring a photographer to snap photos from the moment you wake up until after last call at the reception is going to cost more than five hours of pictures during the day. Multiple photographers, special lighting, and videography will also increase your costs. Ultimately you want to find someone who has a style you love and can provide the number of edited shots you want for a price you can handle. Learn more about hiring a wedding photographer.

How many photos should you get from a wedding photographer?

A professional wedding photographer will usually supply their clients with several hundred photos (200, 300, 400 or 800 and more). Some might even provide more than 1,000 photos. It ultimately depends on the photographer.

Wedding photographers will usually take several thousand photos but cut them down to the keepers. They also have to edit these photos. Typically, they will provide them to the clients on a digital hard drive, as an online download or even in a photo album with beautiful decorations.

What pictures should be taken at a wedding?

On your wedding day, your photographer should take pictures of the couple getting ready for the wedding, as well as a fun personality picture before activities begin. They should also photograph showstoppers like the bouquet, invitations, shoes, reception space, cake, centerpieces, rings and the veil. A generational photo with parents or grandparents is also special. There should also be photos of the bride and groom alone, the ceremony, the confetti-filled exit, and hair and makeup.

How long do wedding photographers stay?

A wedding photographer usually expects to work a full day. This gives them time to photograph the venue, cake, rings, shoes, centerpieces, invitations and other aspects of the wedding before the guests arrive. It also allows them time to get photos of the bride and groom alone, as well as the hair and makeup process and fun personality pictures. Then, they will work through all the parts of the wedding.

When should you take wedding photos?

Couples can take wedding photos before their actual ceremony, during cocktail hour (before the reception), during the wedding reception or even after their wedding. The least stressful time to do it is often before the ceremony when hair and makeup generally look their best, temperatures are usually lower because it’s earlier in the day and the couple won’t have to think or worry about it for the rest of the day.

What’s the best way to set up a consultation or an appointment with a photographer during the COVID-19 pandemic?

The best way to set up an appointment or a consultation with a photographer near you during the COVID-19 pandemic is by conducting an online search. Start by scheduling a call with the photographer. If possible, it may be better to use a video call service so that the photographer can get an idea of the site location. Take this opportunity to discuss safety measures you can take during this time, as well as whether it’s safe to complete the project now or simply postpone it.

Does a photographer need to enter my home?

There are many situations in which a photographer does not need to enter your home. It’s not uncommon for people to prefer to have their pictures taken outdoors. If you're hiring a photographer, maintain safe distances, avoid being in the same room, sanitize all involved surfaces and conduct payment using digital platforms. You can discuss strategies as you complete your search for local photographers.

How can I find out if a photographer is considered an essential COVID-19 service provider?

Consult your city or state’s government websites, which typically have information on which services are deemed essential during the pandemic.

For national information, visit CISA’s page on Identifying Critical Infrastructure During COVID-19. Here, you can find 16 different types of essential infrastructure sectors that can continue operating unimpeded during the pandemic. But some, not all, jurisdictions follow CISA’s definitions of critical infrastructure.

Do photographers offer remote or virtual services?

Photography happens in person, but photographers may be able to offer other remote services safely during the COVID-19 pandemic. For example, they may be able to offer editing and other post-processing services.

If you see that a photographer is offering remote services in their profile, contact them and ask what those services include.

She had to cancel 46 days before our wedding. Husband got a new job, I get it but makes wedding planning amazingly stressful. I had a friend whose photographer flew back from Arizona after she moved away from Colorado to honor her commitment and photograph her wedding since it was already booked. Disappointed.

Miranda was the number 1 person who made our wedding go smoothly. From our first meeting, through the follow-up meetings, the ceremony, the reception, and post-wedding photo choices, she has been the absolute best. She really gets to know the wedding couple and their family and friends. Her photos are natural and beautiful, and that's before any photoshop magic! Miranda takes communication as a top priority; she understood what we wanted out of our wedding photos and gave us helpful and creative ideas. Not to mention, that she is a joy to work with!

First of all, the Hannah and Eric’s wedding photos were so beautiful. Jas was able to set up as well as spontaneously capture the mood of the moment in each photo. Second, Jas was very flexible in working with us to add additional time and photos at the wedding reception. Third, she was very professional and knew how to navigate the event without being obtrusive. My wife’s posting of wedding pics on Facebook drew the attention of more than 150 likes (so far). Thank you Jas K!

Anne was the Photographer for our wedding ceremony and reception two weeks ago. We can't say enough good things about our experience with Anne throughout the entire process. From our first venue meeting I could tell that she is a professional that really cares about not only her clients, but her craft as well. She provided us with a pre-wedding questionnaire to help us stay organized when it came to family photos and other groupings. We've recently got the sneak peak back from Anne and we think she did an extraordinary job of capturing our DIY style wedding. We couldn't be happier that Anne could be apart of our special day, and highly recommend this true professional for any event.

WOW Mike was exactly the wedding photographer we wanted and needed. Simply said he is amazing, book him Today. To go into more detail he took time to meet with us to see what we wanted before hand, he arrived early the day of the wedding, he had wonderful suggestions about pictures and was able to run the show which we needed. He interacted really well with our guests and our family loved him. He is so easy to work with and talk too but he never lingers he was always working on photographing something or someone, he far exceeded all our expectations. We highly recommend Mike!!

Kevin responded quickly to my initial search for a wedding reception photographer, and he was organized and reliable as we planned for the event. He arrived on time, and he did a nice job at the reception, capturing both the action and many other quieter scenes of individuals and groups. The attendees found him friendly and non-intrusive.

Samantha shot photos for my small family wedding this weekend. She was so helpful, fun, and easy to work with. Due to the pandemic, we had to change our plans several times, and Sam was so flexible and willing to work with us. I've only seen a couple of picture previews, but the few I've seen so far have me feeling very excited to see the rest!

Kevin was extremely flexible and easy to work with. He had a great attitude and was very willing to work with our busy schedules to get things figured out. At the wedding, Kevin was friendly, talkative, and organized. Everyone had a great time and it was captured so well. The photos turned out amazing and did a great job of showing how much love and friendship that night was filled with. I could not recommend him highly enough!

Jessica is the best! She made me feel so relaxed and even the groom, who hates taking pictures, said he really enjoyed our photo session during our wedding. We both felt like she wasn’t even there, but yet she was guiding us through everything! I already got some pictures back and I am blown away! Thank you so much Jessica! You helped make my day so special.

We found Sebastian to be both talented at finding the artful shot and skilled with his camera even in the small space he had to work with. He documented our Denver wedding with gusto! We definitely feel like we got the right photographer for the evening. He was absolutely seamless and unobtrusive. There were no crazy flashes going off in our faces, yet he was really good at getting the right exposure. He was reliable and punctual. Given the chance, we would work with him again. Thanks, Sebastian!

I contacted Kevin a few days before I proposed to my girlfriend. He was an amazing help to me throughout the entire process. He went out the day before the proposal and took several pictures of some places that I was thinking of proposing at so that we could narrow down the perfect spot. When we got to the spot and found a bunch of skateboarders hanging around it, he even went up and asked them to leave so that I could pop the question free of distractions. Kevin took pictures of the proposal and some engagement pictures afterwards. The pictures are absolutely beautiful. We are not local to Denver, but are already considering flying Kevin to our future wedding for him to shoot that as well. He was an absolute pleasure to work with and a huge blessing to me and my fiancé. I could not have hoped for a better photographer. He is also the most competitively priced professional photographer that I found in my search. If you’re looking for a friendly photographer and beautiful pictures for a great price, Kevin is an amazing choice.

For us, the entire wedding process was a mess! We were supposed to get married in Aruba and everything was planned by a wedding planner. Due to some unexpected issues, we had to cancel that and plan a new one within a month. His website and profile was great, so he was an easy choice. I only hired him for 3 hours because my dad is a photographer as well and planned to do a lot of picture taking. Bryan showed up early, which was great because the weather had gone from bad to worse and my dad was busy with setting things up. I was super unorganized and was running late myself. He took it upon himself to take pictures of my dress, our rings, as well as me getting ready. I had a hanger made with my new last name, and tried to erase the date, but hadn't had a chance to put the new date. When I saw the pictures, I noticed he had added the date himself and it looked perfect. With the weather, we weren't able to take pictures outside as I had hoped, so it was super chaotic taking couple/family pictures. With tables being moved, people wandering off, and people interrupting to talk to us, he was extremely patient. He definitely knows his weddings and even showed us how to cut the cake, and saved the top of the cake for us! He obliged my crazy family who kept asking for "one more!" because everyone kept looking away. The wedding was on a Saturday, and he sent us the link to the pictures the next Monday. The only regret I have is that I didn't hire him for more time. But I was amazed at all of the important parts that he made sure to get in! I definitely made the right choice with Bryan!

I hired Jessi for my son's 9th birthday party. I hired her because she was responsive to my request, but also sounded like she had a good sense of what to do, what I was looking for, and she owned an incredible zoom lens (that I want to own). I am amazed at what an incredible job she did. I am a picture obsessed person. Normally I am the family photographer and am rarely in them. For my kids' birthday parties I've started hiring photographers to lessen the pressure on me and so that I can actually host (and maybe ideally enjoy a bit of it and be in some pictures). Jessi and her partner were fantastic. Honestly, I can't think of anything to complain about (and I'm good at finding problems and complaining). They were early to the party. They took every picture I asked, without problems. When I forgot about certain pictures (combinations of people), that I forgot, they remembered and made it happen. (Thank you!) They organized 24 kids together for a group picture. They did a wonderful mix of posed and candid pictures. They were incredibly thorough at photographing the party and capturing the spirit of it (I've been 'hearting' so many of the pictures). It's what everyone wants. These pictures are better than ones I would have taken. Jessi and her partner are so incredibly professional. I love the images. They are so well-done. But Jessi also wasn't intrusive. I often forgot she and her partner were there, but they were working so hard and blending in. And they worked the whole time and didn't miss anything. Although I hired her for a birthday party, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend her for any big life event (weddings, engagement parties, new baby pictures, etc). Hire her! You'll be lucky you did. I am so impressed and happy with the work that she did. And now I'm hoping to hire her for my daughter's birthday party...
