Found out my entire drain system was falling apart in my 1950s ranch. These guys were responsive, friendly, and replaced my drain stack while I was out of town. Would be happy to hire again.

Jordan was very professional and got the entire job done the same day he came out to look at it. We had a toilet plumbing clogged which he fixed right away. Then we had some piping to our water meter replaced and a few valves added so that we could turn off water to the house as we need to. Jordan was on time and effective, we would definitely recommend and call again with other plumbing needs!

The main valve to the sprinkler system was leaking under my house. Marvin arrived quickly the day I called, and fixed it in under an hour. I was very happy about that! I was charged an awful lot for the job, even using their $55 off coupon. It cost far more than I expected for a new valve and labor. My receipt isn't broken down by cost of part and cost of labor, but checking prices for valves, their labor fees are huge.

I was very pleased with the speed of response on the job. They responded after business hours within 20 minutes of the thumbtack request and were able to complete the work the next day. Chris was professional, courteous, quality of work was excellent and work was completed neatly. 4 stars only because the cost to reseat a toilet was a bit high compared to expected costs found online. Much better than companies that try to sell Service contracts, but bit of sticker shock.

David came over promptly to check out the situation. After assessing the problem, he was honest and did not charge me for the visit as it was for a service that they were not able to provide (high pressure jetting). He recommended a company that could. I will try to use Drain America for any future plumbing projects.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

How do you find a good plumber?

Whether you need a plumber to perform drain repair, install a new fixture, or replace rusty pipes, you need to make sure you hire someone reliable who will finish your job on time and within budget. Start by asking the plumbers on your short list these questions:

      • What is the total cost? Make sure your estimate includes materials and labor. Find out whether the plumber will be providing the materials and whether you’re being charged an hourly rate (which is variable) or a flat fee.
      • Is removal and cleanup included in the job? Some plumbers leave behind old parts, while others include the cleanup in the cost.
      • Is the work guaranteed? Find out whether the work (as well as the parts or fixtures) are guaranteed under a warranty.

Follow these additional tips for confidently hiring a plumber or other skilled professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
