Caitlin Looby provided editing services for both manuscripts and proposals and was instrumental in improving my scientific writing. Additionally, Caitlin helped me prepare for tenure-track faculty interviews by editing my job talk presentations. I have been fortunate to have been able to work with Caitlin, and would definitely hire her again with my next important writing project. As an editor, Caitlin has provided valuable substantive feedback and insightful suggestions for improving a draft or crafting the message. I strongly recommend Caitlin Looby to all my colleagues seeking editing services.

Working with Amber has been an incredible experience. Amber was available on short notice and always quick to respond to my many questions. Amber helped me to proofread my law school application and made sure that it was error free. She also gave me feedback on my content. It was incredibly helpful to hear an informed opinion on my essays, and the feedback she gave was always helpful and insightful. I would not hesitate to contact Amber in the future if I ever need to make sure a piece of writing is 100% perfect, and I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for high quality, professional editing for any kind of writing project. Jody is a great tutor. She helped my son with his reading, spelling, writing, and math. My son's teacher suggested Jody and her tutoring services. His teacher said Jody was excellent at filling in the missing pieces for our son. The reading intervention program Jody used helped improve our son's grades by helping him find certain letter sounds and how to say them. Jody taught him over 25 spelling rules that he still uses. Vocabulary was another important subject she helped our son with. Jody later helped our son become a better writer by showing him how to write sentences, paragraphs, and reports. Math was the other subject our son needed help with. The level Jody put him in was comfortable and he knew the steps. The steps to the math became harder but Jody took time to explain the steps so my son understood it. Call Jody to help you! She is friendly, patient, smart, and easy to talk to.

I had the chance to work with Michael on a number of occasions, and he is always spot-on with great strategy, content and ideas. I especially think he is a gifted writer and problem-solver, and is probably one of the more resourceful people I've worked with in recent memory. He's very well-versed for digital engagements, including copywriting, content strategy, and certain types of transaction content and micro-copy. My only criticism is that he no longer lives close to me, so I can't meet with him face to face. But he's wonderful to work with regardless.

Incredibly informative and helpful. Margaret provided excellent feedback and was constructive in her editing. My essay was much more cohesive because of her editing, but still allowed my own voice to show through. I would highly recommend her for any writing or editing assistance!

Working with Valentina together or have her work for you is the best experience I ever had hiring a freelancer or temporary service. Nust the approach she uses to get the job done... Personal, Professional and Awesome! Always with great attitude and able to put everyone in the good mood around her. I've never had it that easy with anyone else, just tell her what needs to be do and expectation and that's all, she just takes over without any details being provided and gets it done! Another plus is that she knows everything and has experience in many professions and will always give advice and help or just do it herself. She has helped us as a Business Consultant, HR Consultant, Set guidelines and Company Picies, set strategies, Employee Training on Standards, Safety, Loss Prevention, Product Development, Marketing, Sourcing and Research is her strongest thing you tell her what you wanna know about something or even find someone and she's like a Bad A... Investigator, will find anything or anyone and figure it out where, who, and what happened, Procurement, Orderig, Communication, Presentations, easy going everyone Loves working with her, Event Planner if you are planning an event and you want something unique or unusual or something to be "WOW" she's the one to go to. Besides business professional tasks and duties she will plan and set up all personal events and get it all done! And besides that she can provide desserts, Baker and Professional Cake Decorator, Catering and much more You need a mentor, life skills coach, therapist, counseling, someone to work with kids (even if it's personal or one on one) and life problems and transitions... I had the opportunity to ask Dana to edit and proofread a short review paper I sent for publication. She was always available for questions and also constructive with her comments on my writing. As a non-native speaker of English, it is always good to know why some combinations of words are less frequent than others but seem ungrammatical. Her training in Lingusitics definitely helps her making that kind of commentary. I am pleased with her job and would recommend her to anyone who needs a sharp eye to look at their writing.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you hire a good grant writer?

Grants are available to nonprofit organizations, for-profit businesses that qualify for government grants, and individuals who qualify for foundation or government grants. Hiring a good grant writer can help you gain funding in your chosen field. According to the American Grant Writers’ Association, grant writers can help you research potential grant opportunities; write grant proposals, create budgets, and build budget narratives; review written materials before you submit; prepare a business plan; analyze your organization for grant competitive qualities; prepare research grants; help with 501(c)(3) applications for nonprofits; and more. Investing in the right grant writer could result in a financial win for your organization. Generally no licenses or certificates are required to be a good grant writer, but you may want to find a grant writer who has been certified (not just received a certificate of completion) by a reputable organization such as the Grant Professionals Certification Institute. Qualities to look for in a good grant writer include:

      • Proven success writing winning grants, especially in your target area.
      • Strong writing skills.
      • Strong math skills and demonstrated proficiency with budgeting.
      • Careful attention to detail — brilliant grant proposals may be rejected just for formatting errors, so you want someone who follows instructions explicitly.
      • Expertise in your target area.
      • Punctuality and good communication skills.

How much does a grant writer cost?

Hiring a grant writer can give you a competitive edge when applying for financial grants for your business or nonprofit organization, or as an individual. The cost to hire a grant writer can vary depending on their academic background, areas of expertise, previous grant writing success and years of experience. According to the Grant Professionals Association, grant writers should be paid hourly or by flat fee. It is unethical for a grant writer to accept a commission or percentage compensation of grant monies received. They can, however, be awarded bonuses in line with the hiring company’s prevailing practices. Here are some examples of average grant writing fees:

      • Hourly rate for grant writers with less experience or fewer grants awarded: $25-$35 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with some degree of success: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Hourly rate for grant writers with proven success winning large grants: $75-$150 or more per hour.
      • For a smaller grant, the writer may charge a flat fee of $200-$500 for preparation and submission.

Pricing may also vary based on the complexity of the grant application. A federal grant that requires pages of research, budgets and a business plan may take more than 30 hours to prepare. For a high-level grant writer who charges $100 per hour, this means $3,000 or more in grant writing fees.

Most grant writers will provide you with a total cost estimate before agreeing to the work. You may be required to pay a deposit up front, or the grant writer may work from a retainer. Often, seasoned grant writers pay for themselves in the long run by writing successful grants.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
