Andrea Castillo says, "My daughter has been working with Corbin since March and the results are truly remarkable. My daughter was born wearing a tutu and ballet shoes, she started dancing when she was three at our local studio. After years of recitals, she joined a competition team for eight years. Three years ago an amazing opportunity began during her senior year of high school. She auditioned for LADanceMagic's Senior Company, made the final cut, and began traveling to convention cities. She auditioned the summer after graduation and was selected to represent LADanceMagic's Pro Track. She traveled the last two years on two tours to 34 cities while attending college. Where am I going with this, Ballroom is all the craze, it's made a phenomenal comeback. LADanceMagic added Ballroom classes to their weekend schedules. One of my daughter's responsibilities on the tour was to assist the Dance Faculty on stage, she needed to acquire the core techniques of Ballroom as the tour began. I contacted Corbin on a Sunday and stressed our urgency, he was flexible he scheduled a private lesson that following Wednesday accommodating her school and travel schedules. Corbin established her dances of interest, and her knowledge of patterns, and then Corbin's expertise as an instructor kicked in. They begin to discuss the different dance terms, counts, and timing from her world of Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, and Contemporary, versus Ballroom. Corbin's knowledge opened up a new world of terms, timing, and musicality. His knowledge of all four Ballroom styles is evident once he takes to the floor. My daughter's Ballroom skills stood out on stage, she's continued training with Corbin after her LADanceMagic tour ended in July. Continuing to train with Corbin in Ballroom has added another style to her resume. Corbin challenges and encourages her which has resulted in tremendous growth. Corbin has choreographed a beautiful Ballroom routine that they will showcase in September. As a competition dance mom, if you're looking for a Ballroom instructor to assist your dancer this season, I highly recommend Corbin."See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do you wear to swing dance lessons?

Swing dance is an increasingly popular style of ballroom dance with a dress code that reflects its roots in the 1920s-1940s jazz era. Although many studios don’t require historically accurate costumes for their private dance lessons, many dancers want to dress the part. You can wear clothes that are comfortable to move — and sweat — in, such as T-shirts and loose skirts or khakis. Or for an appropriately vintage look, women often wear shirt dresses with a knee-length A-line or circle skirt that allows for plenty of swishy movement. Men usually opt for a button-down shirt and trousers. The most important part of a swing dance outfit is the shoes. Both men and women can opt for simple sneakers, like Keds, or leather dance shoes, such as saddle shoes. Until you have several dance lessons under your belt, stay away from heels.

How much do dance lessons cost?

Adults who want to learn to dance, whether to prepare for a wedding or to meet new people, often enjoy taking dance lessons from an experienced dance instructor. Instructors may offer classes one-on-one to individual students or couples, or to small groups. The national average cost for a dance instructor ranges from $30 to $50. Some studios offer a discounted introductory lessons or group lessons, as well as package deals that are more affordable than paying for individual lessons. Some dance instructors will travel to the student’s home, which usually costs more, while others hold small-group sessions in their studios. If you choose a small-group class, expect to pay less than for individual dance lessons.
