Kyle is absolutely amazing! When I think therapy or counseling, I usually cringe and want to run screaming. My experience with Kyle has been very different and I find myself looking forward to my time with her. She has helped my husband and I save our marriage. I am also seeing her on an individual basis and know that I will be an emotionally healthier person because of her knowledge. Kyle immediately makes you feel comfortable and you can really feel that she cares a lot about you. Choose Kyle, you really won't regret it and your life will be even more amazing after! Steph J.

Well you probably already know that change can be difficult but isn’t it easier with someone who already knows the lay-of-the-land? Laura is helping my wife and I, who both come from traumatic pasts, begin to realize (because it’s true) that we are all chasing the same thing in life. And that we aren’t all that different from each other. And that we can truly be happier when we take care of each other. She is incredibly insightful when it comes to therapeutic techniques, neuroscience, and practical life skills which has helped us become more willing and capable of doing the work ourselves. Life can still be challenging but all of this is changing our marriage and ourselves for the better.

I have known Liza for several years. She had been our family, marriage, parenting, individual, therapist for a couple of those years. Her down to earth, practical, solid biblical approach to her active therapy style was truly a God send for us. We had been through a few other counselors over the course of 10 years. Liza was able to establish what our families needs were, and was able to teach us the tools we needed to build up our parenting skills and help us with a deeper understanding of our marriage structure in a year and a half. Liza touched on things that were never brought up before and really had us doing some internal work and walking some roads that were hard but very effective. The skills and knowledge that we gained from our experience with her are are really priceless and such a deep blessing. Granted, our family was willing to do the work, but she guided us with Gods word the whole way through. I would highly recommend her to you. Her gift of empathy truly spoke to our hearts and helped us through the hardest most traumatizing events in our lives. My family was able to heal and come out of this stronger and more solid then we had prayed for.

Scott is my massage therapist, and he helps me keep my aging body lithe, limber and relaxed. I have had sessions with him a couple of times a month for several years. He is spiritually grounded and physically strong and can gently go very deep into big muscle groups to release tension points. I always leave our sessions feeling rejuvenated in the best sense. Scott is the best.

Before I began working with David I felt like therapy was something I had repeatedly failed. My work with other professionals morphed into the same conversation that always ended with the same question: What did I do wrong? But in working with David I have -- for the first time -- discovered that my anxiety and anger are things I can process. David created a safe environment in which I've learned to allow myself to experience my emotions and, in turn, slowly begin to work through them. Unlike my previous experiences in therapy, David has provided me with practices and tools that I can use after our sessions end. As a result, I finally feel as though I am an active member in my therapy, instead of the cause of all my problems.

The initial feeling I struggled with before going into a therapy session with Laura, was mostly fear. The idea that I would be pushed to share parts of my life with someone I had no connection to could not have been more intimidating to me. Honestly, within moments of meeting Laura..I felt a sense of relief. Laura has something about her that naturally gives a true sense of trust. She has an incredible way of understanding a situation or calling out emotions without much even being said. I am amazed with the capability she has to be so blunt and brutally honest..while still giving sincere reassurance that there is nothing she cannot help you heal from, if you remain open to the process. I am very grateful to have found someone so passionate and knowledgeable about what she does. My time with her has truly been a gift!

George MacIlwinen is the Horse Whisperer of young adults struggling to find their footing in their transition to adulthood. Our son had a history of difficult medical problems in childhood that prevented him from achieving developmental milestones and left him as an anxious young adult, depressed, over-medicated and isolated. Over the years we ran through many therapists and programs and our son had grown skeptical of their effectiveness. All that changed when we met George MacIlwinen. George's contributions to our son's life and our family's life are so extensive, it would take pages to catalog them. First and foremost, George understood our son like no one had before, he understood the trauma that our son had experienced and the gaps in his development. Most important, he saw our son's potential and his prospects for a good future. Therapeutically, George is a creative and independent thinker. He has an over-arching philosophy, but within that he is adaptive. For our son he followed a holistic approach incorporating experiential therapy and psychotherapy together with a strong emphasis on healthy life habits including reduced medications, physical fitness and diet. He has also been especially proactive in helping our son develop social skills. Personally, George is calm, empathetic and friendly. He's genuine with an easy smile. He is an excellent listener; he's insightful. George models the healthy behavioral habits that he advocates. He's a natural mentor and educator and has provided invaluable counseling and guidance to our son and to us. George MacIlwinen is an amazing therapist. Meeting him has been one of the single best things that has ever happened to our family. It's a great pleasure to recommend him to you.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What are the types of psychologists?

Psychologists are healthcare professionals who use scientific methods to understand the relationships between the brain, environment and behavior. Psychologists may focus on research — studying how the brain and various environments drive behaviors to better understand the issues that trouble patients and society as a whole — or they may focus on practice — interacting with people using therapeutic methods. The American Psychological Association shares some of the more prevalent types of psychologists:

    • Clinical psychologists assess and treat mental, emotional and behavioral disorders.
    • Cognitive and perceptual psychologists study human perception, thinking and memory.
    • Community psychologists work to strengthen the abilities of communities, settings, organizations and broader social systems to meet people’s needs — such as improving support for victims of natural disasters, or working to improve health policies.
    • Counseling psychologists help people understand and take action on everyday issues, career and work problems, and serious adversity.
    • Developmental psychologists study the psychological development of the human being throughout life.
    • Educational psychologists concentrate on how effective teaching and learning take place.
    • Engineering psychologists conduct research on how people work best with machines.
    • Environmental psychologists study the dynamics of how people interact with their environments.
    • Evolutionary psychologists study how evolutionary principles such as mutation, adaptation and selective fitness influence human thought, feeling and behavior.
    • Experimental psychologists study cognitive processes, comparative psychology (cross-species comparisons), and learning and conditioning.
    • Forensic psychologists apply psychological principles to legal issues.
    • Health psychologists specialize in how biological, psychological and social factors affect health and illness.
    • Industrial/organizational psychologists apply psychological principles and research methods to the workplace to improve productivity, health and the quality of work life.
    • Neuropsychologists and behavioral neuropsychologists explore the relationships between brain systems and behavior.
    • Quantitative and measurement psychologists focus on methods and techniques for designing experiments and analyzing psychological data.
    • Rehabilitation psychologists work with stroke and accident victims, people with mental disabilities, and those with developmental disabilities caused by such conditions as cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism.
    • School psychologists assess and counsel students, consult with parents and school staff, and conduct behavioral interventions when appropriate.
    • Social psychologists study how a person’s mental life and behavior are shaped by interactions with other people.
    • Sport psychologists help athletes refine their focus on competition goals, become more motivated, and learn to deal with anxiety and fear of failure around competition.

    What is a psychologist?

A psychologist is a professionally trained mental health professional who helps patients navigate challenging life situations or mental health issues. To become a psychologist you must earn a doctoral degree; qualifying degrees include a Ph.D., Psy.D. or Ed.D. To actively practice, a psychologist must be licensed in their state and maintain good standing. Psychologists are trained to administer tests that can evaluate a patient’s cognitive strength and weaknesses, intellectual skills, vocational aptitude and preference, personality characteristics, and neuropsychological functioning, explains the American Psychological Association (APA).

A psychologist meets with patients in an office and may work with a variety of methods, depending on patient need, such as cognitive, behavioral or interpersonal.  According to the APA, common reasons a person may visit a psychologist include:

    • Dealing with depression, anger or anxiety over a long period of time.
    • Help with a chronic condition that is interfering with their lives or physical health.
    • Help with grieving and other abrupt transitions.
    • Overcoming addictions.
    • Managing chronic illness.
    • Breaking old and harmful patterns of thinking or behavior.

Can a clinical psychologist write prescriptions?

To be able to write a prescription, a clinical psychologist must practice in a state that permits them to do so, and must either have a master’s degree in psychopharmacology or have completed the required advanced training program. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), five states currently permit psychologists to write prescriptions: Idaho, New Mexico, Illinois, Iowa and Louisiana. Many psychologists who are not able to write prescriptions work in partnership with psychiatrists, pediatricians or primary care doctors to help their patients who need medication.

    How much do therapists cost?

If you are experiencing a challenging time, have mental health difficulties, or just want professional guidance as you move through life, a therapist can provide relief, tools and structure. The national average cost for a therapist is $80-$100 per hour, although prices may be higher or lower depending on geographic location and the experience and training of the therapist.

Psychiatrists, psychologists and licensed therapists are all health professionals who offer various modalities of therapy. Ask questions about the type of therapy they specialize in (such as cognitive or behavioral, etc.) and their area of expertise (such as grief, anxiety, body image disorders, etc.) to help you find the right fit for your needs. Therapy sessions are typically 50-60 minutes long.  The patient usually meets with the therapist in their office; sessions may also be held remotely (via Skype, etc.) or in a clinical setting. Psychologists, psychiatrists and other therapists who have earned advanced degrees will typically charge higher rates than other licensed therapists. Depending on your diagnosis, your health insurance may cover your therapy costs.
