I needed a large, heavy furniture piece moved. Moving Pros gave me a very reasonable, flat rate quote. They arrived with a custom built dolly that was able to move the piece up to my third floor apartment. The men were hard workers.

Pros: Recieved a competitive rate. Moving team finished move faster than estimate I was originally given even taking time to wait out a storm so things wouldn't be ruined. Bad: Rings for lamp went missing, (cheap rubber rings and hard to distinguish from other things in truck I'm sure but I can't use the lamp without them so I'm out 70$). Moving team was 1.5 hours later than estimated arrival time (they made up for this though with speed of move)

Movers were a little past the arrival window in the morning but kept in contact. Otherwise, they worked hard and did the move successfully and in their suggested time frame (though I did a flat rate). Free use of wardrobe boxes was very helpful.

Calls were returned promptly, they were on time and did a great job caring for my furniture dismantling and wrapping it. I would use them again and highly recommend them. We had a small move job just one room so they gave us a flat rate so we did not need to worry about how long it was taking. They were great!

Contacted Elite about moving a piano from a house in Thornton to our home in Monument. Elite provided us with a very competitive rate and were able to schedule it for the next day. Min and Mike showed up on time and ready to go. They made moving the piano look easy. Likewise, when they got to our house, they had it unloaded and into the house and down the stairs quickly. Min and Mike were friendly, courteous and professional throughout. I'd hire them again in a minute. Thank you!

Nick and Eddie were on time, very professional, very personable, extremely respectful of our belongings and had a very reasonable rate. I called Fast Friends and Nick answered my questions and was able to schedule me right away. I highly recommend this company for anyone needing help to move, I myself will hire them again should the need arise.

Drake offered a very reasonable rate for the work he provided. He did an excellent job, was very respectful, and delivered what was promised. He and his assistants cleaned up after they removed the tree and left the yard and street clean and tidy. Will us his services again.

1 Stop Movers were very efficient, timely, and got the overall job done. They were upfront about their billable rate. We were very happy with their service. As with any move (especially one at a row home) there were some nicks and scratches we had to repair, but I felt the team did a good job.

Very happy with JDog Junk Removal. Hank and company were very professional and efficient. Got rid of our construction junk for a reasonable price. Then they swept up the place to include my husbands saw dust mess. Highly recommend them if you need junk cleared!

We had a great moving experience with One World Van Lines. Our driver was very professional. Having moved many times, my family has dealt with the good, the bad and the WORST. With this move, from Michigan to Houston, TX, everything was so easy. Excellent work. Quick, easy to work with and they were very careful packing our items. I wish I could rate our driver at least 8 out of 5 stars. His "can do" attitude made this move the BEST one yet! Thank you One World Van Lines, and huge THANK YOU to the driver and crew.

We were on a tight deadline because new tenants were moving into our place on the same day we were moving out. We originally just were going to move the large items but the owner ended up giving us a really good deal to get everything done. To summarize our experience with Transworld Van Lines very polite and professional, they introduced the whole team and went over what needed to be done prior. Arrived on time and took very good care of our furniture, I didn't even ask them to but I noticed it as they were loading on to their truck. Stuck to their rate- we paid exactly what we were quoted, nothing more nothing less.I would use them again without hesitation.

I love supporting a new small local business. Vincenzo couldn't meet my moving needs but I wanted to rate him on his professionalism and quote. He was quick to respond and very polite and in the long run I think his quote may have been accurate, I just needed a different type of moving truck for my move. All the best to you and your business!

My movers just left and requested a review as quickly as possible. I assured them that I would provide then with a 10 out of 5 star rating. Most importantly, the young men were respectful to my husband and I. I am 67 years old so I was on the young men from start to finish - making sure they were respectful of my belongings and home. They wrapped all of my furniture and assisting with packing items that were not packed upon their arrival. I did notice a small hole in the wall at the pick up address. Tight corners so I did not complain. But I did want them to know that I noticed. Other than that, my belongings arrived in great shape. I will recommend to my friend Margaret who will be moving in about 2 weeks. I informed her to request Mark and Stephen. Thanks again for your hard work. Spend your tip wisely.

I hired Sierra Mobile Solutions to help me unload a moving truck. Kris was awesome! Professional, friendly, prompt and efficient. The only reason I didn't rate 5 stars is I requested 2 movers, and only Kris showed up. Only having one mover required more work on my part, which I was hoping to avoid. But it all worked out! Kris did offer to call in another guy, but in my situation it worked out to simply help him unload my truck. In all, a great experience and I would have no problem recommending him to friends!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much should you tip furniture movers?

Moving furniture is hard work and potentially dangerous unless you’re properly equipped. For anyone not ready to handle their heavy oak armoire alone, professional furniture movers can safely and efficiently move your items to another room in your house or across town as needed. The national average cost to hire heavy furniture movers is $150-$200 per hour. This rate could include multiple furniture movers working as a team to move items such as beds, armoires, billiards tables, pianos, shelves, tables, entertainment centers and more. Hourly rates can vary by region. If your furniture movers have arrived on time, done a great job, kept your home and belongings protected from scratches and dings, and completed the move as planned, a tip will be greatly appreciated. Moving companies suggest approximately 10 percent of the total bill as gratuity for those doing local moving jobs, which is also a good guideline for tipping heavy furniture movers. If the total bill for heavy moving was $100 and two workers were onsite, consider giving them $10 total, or $5 each for a job well done.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.
