The contractor correctly diagnosed that the reason my gutters were leaking is the drip edge was on the top of the underlayment and the underlayment needed to be on top of the drip edge. He was honest and told me the underlayment needed to be fixed all the way around the roof and he didn't have time that day so he charged me a reduced rate for just doing the inspection. I contacted my roofing company and they sent someone out to fix it at no cost to me so I was very happy to benefit from the contractors expertise! The contractor was late to our appointment though otherwise I would have given him 5 stars.

Before my review of Pipecraft Plumbing, I need to explain the nightmare plumbing and gas situation I found myself in. I hired contractor in February 2015 to install gas lines and replace the galvanized plumbing in my circa 1954 house. The work was still not completed in February 2016 and the contractor was not responding to my telephone calls. I decided to call in someone else to finish the job and Pipecraft responded to my Thumbtack inquiry. Jacob inspected what had been done--despite specifying to the first contractor that I wanted a permit pulled for code inspection, Jacob informed me that the installed that gas lines did not meet code; I confirmed this fact with the city inspector--the installation was totally wrong and had safety issues and subpar materials had been used. Jacob provided me with a quote to redo the job and said he could have it done in 5 days. He is a master plumber and provided me with his license number, a copy of his liability insurance and references. He and his staff tore out everything the previous plumber had done, cleaned up after work each day (after having workers who initially stated that they worked "clean" and then did not--this was very much appreciated), and completed the job in five days. He communicated with me frequently to confirm how I wanted the job completed and when I was making decisions and thinking about changing aspects of the job mid-way through he provided me with the pros and cons. I had no reservations about leaving him with a key to work at the house while I was away from home. Jacob was involved all the way through the final city inspection, When the inspector asked for some minor additional work on the first inspection, Jacob promptly completed the work. A general contractor came to my house on some other business and commented that the gas line work was beautiful--I never thought of gas lines in terms of "beautiful". I would highly recommend Pipecraft Plumbing for all of your plumbing needs.

I originally hired KMA to do some work on my gutters, but it ended up that the job required a contractor. He was very gracious and actually came out two times to verify if he could do it, and did not bill me. I found this to be very honest and refreshing.

The flame sensor was malfunctioning on my furnace on a SUNDAY. David sent a couple of guys out and they were able replace the sensor and the filter for less than my friend (who is a general contractor) told me it would be. No weekend rates or hidden fees. David personally brought the replacement filter and discussed future maintenance the furnace would need. He was very nice and honest and my furnace has been working like a dream ever since! We will definitely be using Dr. HVac in the future and would recommend their services to anyone!!! Thanks David for great service!!!

The guys did a great job! We felt very taken care of despite the job being just a small bathroom remodel. They even assisted with getting our granite counter tops picked up and fabricated to accelerate the project schedule. Our facilities were down a matter of days, not weeks like the other contractors I interviewed had projected. Highly recommended!

Wed Aug 16, 8:18 PM If you’re contemplating hiring a good General Contractor, Daniel Gonzalez and his construction teams are your guys! We hired Daniel to finish 1,300 square feet including an extra bedroom, laundry area, storage room and quilt studio in our basement. Daniel gave a fair quote and he brought top notch teams and hard working guys to the project! His electrician did an excellent job installing all new electrical; and his HVAC guy ran new heat ducts and installed a whole house humidifier. The plumber ran new plumbing for a utility sink and washing machine. The framer did a fabulous job independently building our design to our exact specifications and even added decorative arches. The drywall guys hauled in heavy drywall sheets one-by-one because it wouldn’t fit into our window wells. The drywall installers got 4 rooms put up in one and ½ days! The tapers and texture's did an excellent job taping drywall seams and adding texture in less than two days for each team. Daniel’s crews showed up on time, they were respectful, trustworthy, and we appreciated how hard they all worked to get the job done in a timely manner. Daniel and his trim and paint team did an excellent job painting, installing our flooring, trim, doors, hardware and window ledges. Best of all, Daniel is an honest guy and does what he agrees to do. Treat these guys right and they’ll treat you right! Great job! We love our new space! Thanks Daniel!

Jarek was amazing to work with! After months of unreliable contractors that weren't completing quality work, I am so happy we finished our project with Jarek! I only wish we would have hired him sooner! He installed our large encaustic cement tile backsplash and bathroom's marble mosaic and marble subway tile. Everything is extremely precise and lined up perfectly! He even took it upon himself to remove a couple dozen tiny pieces of marble from our mosaic and replaced them, because the color was a bit darker than the rest - I noticed them myself, but thought it was being too picky if I mentioned them. He even tore out our previous contractor's poorly done shower pan and remade it correctly, without hesitation. I would trust him to complete a large project on his own, without even checking in on the progress. He has a great work ethic, shows up on time every day and takes a lot of pride in

Hire This company! Hire Jake & his brother! I had the nightmare of nightmare general contractors come into my home and leave it in shambles. The electrical was left dangerously disorganized. Jake and his brother showed up and worked around the clock to make sure the whole house was 100% safe and ready to go for me and my family. It feels great knowing people like Jake have your back and will make your home safe secure modern and functioning exactly as you like. I’ll use these guys again and again. Thanks for your work guys! A Dream kitchen comes true! Giza Stone Works offered us products that were far more superior than anything else we looked at and at a quarter the cost of everything else we were quoted. The entire kitchen remodel was completed in a timely manner. Alex and his team were very punctual, clean and pleasant to be around. The work site was kept clean and Alex answered any questions I had before during and after completion of this project. Lizeth in the office was courteous and prompt to return calls and answer questions. The crew along with Alex and George are amazing craftsmen. I have referred several people to GSW for great products and an amazing job. I had previous contractor nightmares, so I was worried about contracting with anyone, this experience was The best! Highly recommend Giza Stone Works. Thank you, Alex, you were true to your word and that is the best gift I could have asked for. Five Stars from me!!!

Wait, seriously, go no further! Scot with prime handyman is who you want to hire! I’m telling you! I hired Scot just to paint the interior of my home, yet after a nightmare experience with a general contractor who left my home unfinished, Scot handled it all! He literally finished everything the other guy didn’t, basically became my new General Contractor to help me out, took over the whole project, got it all done in a timely manner, was there to consult as well as doing the work, didn’t even flinch when more work was needed to do to fix the other guys mistakes, then painted the place beautifully, and left my home better then how I imagined. This guys the real deal. Now and again you get an amazing find on thumbtack of someone you know you’ll always call from now on for work, Scot with Prime Handyman is it!! Truly great experience. He will impress you for sure!

Mr. Lefcourt was very easy to work with on our tricky bathroom remodel in a 115+yr old home. He had a good intuition for our priorities as far as budget, magnitude of change we wanted, and general feel of the result we desired. He worked efficiently and finished the job in less time than anticipated. Other individuals we got quotes from threw wild ideas at us that would have been far beyond our budget and time allotment; Richard worked respectfully within our comfort zone, and came in ahead of schedule and under budget. It doesn't get much better.

Edward did an excellent job with the project my fiancé and I hired him for. Edward was responsive and upfront with my fiancé from the very beginning. He listened to exactly what we needed. We needed to turn a basement living room into a master bedroom with a closet as well as texture the remodeled master bathroom. Edward did great work with the metal framing; did great work with the drywalling, mudding, and texturing as well. I have nothing but great things to say about Edward. We have had a lot of bad experiences with contractors throughout our remodel and Edward’s professionalism restored our faith that there are good contractors out there. We would recommend his services to anyone.

My husband and I hired Custom Builders LLC (Kaleb) to tear down the half hall staircase leading to the second level of our home and replaced it with a open rail and baluster staircase. Kaleb's responsiveness throughout the job was great. We where kept informed about the timing of when materials would arrive and when each segment of the job would be completed. Kaleb's work is high quality and he kept a very clean work space between each segment of the project. We got very good value for the job. We had done some research about prices before we hired Custom Builders and found Kaleb's price for the job was very reasonable. The timing on completion of each segment of the job was longer than planned. Completion time was double the time that was initially set. There were a number of issues with getting the correct materials from Kaleb's vender. If you are willing to work with a small contractor who does the work himself Kaleb Shultz (Custom Builders LLC) is your guy.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

For more on where to start when remodeling a bathroom check out The Complete Thumbtack Bathroom Remodel Guide.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.
