There are many things to consider when you pick a moving company especially if price is a focal point. First of all, you can request somebody to come by to give you a flat rate after they look at what they need to move. Next is the per hour cost that most moving companies will give you. The rate may be low, but you often only get 2 guys which makes the move that much longer. When the team of movers came by, there were 5 guys with a large truck (they had a car following them that drove everybody). It took about 2.5 hours all together which is pretty darn quick considering they had to use 1 medium sized service elevator to get my stuff out of the apartment. My large king sized bed was disassembled and put back together, items were places where I wanted, everything was covered with moving mats when it got put into the truck, and everybody was professional and nice. I had a slight change in my time schedule and they were able to accommodate that as well. I would definitely recommend them and use them again (though I hope I don’t move any time soon!). Side Note: You get treated the way you treat others. Be nice to the movers and if you can’t do that, then just be professional and you won’t have any problems. They’re just trying to help.

I recently hired Carlson Custom Interiors for a truck unloading and could not be happier with their services. To be frank all moving companies can move a person's stuff, but what sets Carlson Custom Interiors apart from other movers is they treat your stuff like its' their stuff. They treated each piece of furniture and box with care and were to be courteous of the house as they went in and out. On a personal note Daniel and his crew were simply nice people who take pride in their work and make sure the customers are happy with their service. If you're looking for a local professional company, you should give Carlson Customer Interiors an opportunity to earn your business.

This is the best, most efficient packing/moving service we have ever hired. Joe was responsive and helpful in planning our project. We are working on a remodel and needed some flexibility to work with different schedules. Joe made it happen and sent a very capable and pleasant crew. I will hire them again and recommend their service to all of our friends, family members, and neighbors. A++

I wanted to send you a quick note to ensure that you are aware of the great job that your team did for our recent move. In the world that we live in today exceptional service is, unfortunately, not common and needs to be recognized. Given the fact that our previous moving company did a lack-luster job, my husband and I weren’t really sure what to expect. Needless to say, whatever expectations we may or may not have had were exceeded. The process from the initial planning to the follow up has all been great. Carlos was an incredible asset throughout the entire process. He was very thorough and provided great value and guidance from the initial planning phase of the move throughout the follow up and packing material retrieval. He was very patient and insightful, which was extremely valuable as we worked through the process. Carlos kept us aware of timelines and expectations, which kept us on track. I could not have asked for better service than Carlos provided. Cedric was also great to work with. He was thorough and informative when he came out to do the estimate for our needs for the move. He also provided great insight that helped with our peace of mind for the move. Lastly, Matthew and his team were incredible. Matthew did a great job of walking through, answering any questions that we had, and explaining the process. He and his team were all very professional. They were quick and actually ended up getting things done ahead of schedule, which was a very pleasant surprise. Everything arrived in great shape. The team was exceptionally accommodating and considerate to my entire family throughout the packing, moving, and delivery. This all means a lot with all of the chaos and two young children in the mix. As mentioned above, I was very pleased with the entire process and would definitely recommend your company and services to anyone else that may need them. Thank you, again.

Fairly solid moving experience. Joe's team isn't the cheapest, but they got me moved with impressive speed and were patient with some confusion I caused around parking. They weren't very careful with my stuff though. Boxes were upended unnecessarily causing some minor damage despite what I felt was reasonably careful packing (I've had a couple moves between sublets this year with basically the same packing job with no damage) and my couch had a little wooden plate broken off it (not the most durable piece of furniture and I didn't break it down as small as it could go, but I offered to break it down further and they declined.) There was also some wall scuffing I had to spackle over from the place I was leaving, though the tricky stairs at the place I was headed into looked great. In all though, for moving cheap stuff quickly with the expectation of a ding here and there 1Stop did the job with great efficiency.

Levon and his team were so amazing! They moved all of our large items (and we had a lot of heavy items) out of our old apartment and into our new one in only 2.5 hours! They even had to lug everything up a flight a stairs when they unloaded, and that includes travel time to our new place. They were extremely efficient and fast moving AND their packing skills were out of this world. I will 100% book him again if we have to move. He was also extremely responsive, if I had to leave a voicemail for him he always got back in a timely manner. Absolutely no complaints and worth every penny! On top of their skills they were extremely friendly, much more personable than a major moving company. Highly recommended!

Although they showed up over 2 hours late, the driver was apologetic, very courteous, and professional. he did a great job loading and packing the truck. they were late because one of their crew did not show up for work, so the biz owner had to round up his teenage son to assist. the poor kid was overwhelmed by the back breaking work, but they got it done in a very timely manner. bottom line they got it all done, and other than a very minor couple bed frame wheels breaking ($10) nothing was damaged. we are using them again next week. my only suggestion to the biz owner is to call when they are running late, so we customers are not left to wonder. it would have eliminated a lot of anxiety on our part.

I worked with Edward and his team moving my 3 bed 2 bath house same day. Packing and moving. He and his team were extremely professional and amazingly thorough. Everything was transported to the new home safely. They even put our large items where we wanted them, and made sure everything was working properly. Anything that needed to be disassembled was put back together perfectly. I would highly recommend his team to anyone looking for moving services, packing services, or cleaning services. Very polite, very professional, and all around fun guys to be around.

I would give this company 10 stars if I could! They totally came through in a pinch! A different company was supposed to move us... on a Sunday... and never showed. I contacted moonlight movers off this website and we were able to be moved same day. My family was moved into our new home within 6 hours, and the movers were efficient, courteous and careful. Nothing was broken and there were no issues. Perfect. And at the end of it all, they were less expensive than the original moving company! Moving with a family is hard, and everything has to be on schedule. Moonlight saved us from having to reschedule EVERYTHING! I seriously can not say enough. With any luck this is our forever home, but I will recommend them to anyone.

I just needed help loading my things into a moving truck and these guys knew exactly what they are doing! All I had to do was sit back, relax and let them work. AJ, thank you (again) for your professionalism and your care with moving my belongings. If I ever need to move within the Denver are again, I will definitely contact you! -Amy

There are no words to express my gratitude for Hank, his daughter Jackie, and Jeremy! Hank responded to my need for someone to pickup and haul 17 years of accumulated trash and junk from our yard and home so we can sell it. We were overwhelmed with the project and panicking because we were running out of time to get all of the work done and our funds were quickly becoming depleted. Hank understood our urgency, came right out and agreed to start the next morning. He also offered to invoice the job to our realtor and have the payment come out of the proceeds from the sale of the house at closing. True to his word Hank and his crew were there bright and early, worked all day hauling away our junk, then loading up and moving a load of our belongings to storage. We are going to use JDog for the rest of our move. They were amazing!

Adam and his team were great. They actually showed up on time. Which I find is usually always hit and miss with most moving companies. They were in and out. Expedited the process while being as carful and cognizant about my property as possible. Very professional and punctual. I'll definitely be hiring them for my next Airbnb set up. If you're relocating or need some help moving some things. I would definitely hire this team.

Alex and company are amazing! We were being strung along by our big-name moving company, and needed to be in Missouri to start a new job. After yet another delay, and yet another "guarantee", we were desperate and found AmerApex Moving. Alex contacted us on a Monday and by Thursday, they were there! They were absolute lifesavers, and did everything they could to take care of our belongings and make us feel at ease. And then they were in Missouri by Saturday to unload everything in our new house! On top of that, they are incredibly friendly and made a stressful situation feel much lighter. We can't thank Alex enough, and wish every moving company out there could be half as professional and effective as his!

Very nice people, nice company, reliable. Go for it. I went with a dedicated truck option and I don’t regret it. Never used a moving company in the states, only when I move here from France. I highly recommend. Both, they were so charming and helpful, as they transformed a “scary moving” in a smooth operation… Perfect move !

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do moving companies do?

Moving companies provide a range of services to help you physically move out of one residence and move into a new place. But moving companies can do so much more than just haul your belongings across town in a truck. The national average for moving company prices ($250-$350 per hour) reflects the range of services provided. Here are examples of all the ways moving companies can help:

  • Packing: Moving companies can pack your belongings for you. They typically charge a flat rate for both the box and the labor to pack the box. The more time-consuming the belongings are to pack, the higher the cost per box. For example, books could be $5 per box, linens $10 per box, and fine china and glassware $18 per box.
  • Specialty moving: Safely move a baby grand piano, a oversize aquarium, or other specialty items with the help of pro movers.
  • Storage: Many moving companies can store your belongings while you wait for a new home to be remodeled or closing of your new home to be finalized. If you’re moving long-distance, they often provide short-term storage free for a specific length of time, and a set rate after that (such as $60 per square cubic foot of storage space used).
  • Long-distance moves: No need to rent a trailer and move your things; a long-distance moving company can haul your belongings across the country for you. Typically they charge by the cubic foot for moves, with prices based on your destination.
  • Unpacking: Moving companies can even unpack your belongings for you after they have moved them. This is not as common, and will definitely increase the price, but can be helpful if you’re not able to tackle this task yourself.

How much does a moving company charge per hour?

When you’re ready to make a major move, it’s time to research moving companies’ prices. A moving company may charge on average anywhere between $25 and $100 per hour, per worker, for moving services. The price will vary with regional labor rates, local cost to do business, and the level of service the movers are providing. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a moving company is $250-$350 per hour. This price includes a range of pricing, from all-in service with four or more movers on site to standard hourly rates for one or two movers. Other factors that affect moving companies’ prices are packing, stairs (or elevators), and distance. For a full-service move, you pay movers to pack your belongings for you. You may pay for the cost of the moving boxes and an hourly rate per worker, and there may be additional charges for packing fragile items. Stairs will also add to your moving prices. Lifting and carrying boxes and furniture up and down stairs takes more time and creates more physical labor for the workers. Moving companies may charge flat rates for flights of stairs, such as $50-$70 per flight. A moving company may also charge a one-time fee for moving things via elevator, such as $75-$100. If parking is not accessible in front of your home or apartment building, there may also be an additional fee for the added distance to carry your belongings to the truck.

How much does it cost for long-distance movers?

Long-distance movers transport your belongings across the country for you. No more renting a trailer and road-tripping from state to state with your entire house hitched to your bumper. Long-distance movers make the move happen so you can fly to your new home, suitcase in hand, and wait for your furniture to arrive. Nationally, the average price range for long-distance movers is $1,490-$2,230. The distance you are moving and the number of cubic feet the movers have to transport will both affect cost. Another factor in long-distance moving costs is whether you choose to pay for an exclusive move or a consolidated move.

In an exclusive move, which is more expensive, your belongings are the only cargo on the moving truck. The movers travel directly to your new house and deliver your belongings on a scheduled day. A consolidated move is more affordable because the movers transport your belongings along with those of other people, saving them time and gas — which means you save money. The downside is that your belongings typically arrive with a two-week delivery window rather than on a prescheduled day. Read reviews to make sure you can trust the company with your possessions to ensure a peaceful moving process.

How much does it cost to move a one-bedroom apartment across the country?

Professional movers can handle the hard work of moving your one-bedroom apartment across the country for you. You can determine what your move will cost by learning the rate your movers charge per cubic foot and how they factor distance into the total cost. Cross-country movers typically charge based on your belongings rather than apartment size because that determines how much work they will have to do. For example, a studio apartment that is crammed full of things will take more work and moving truck space than the contents of a three-bedroom apartment with very little furniture.

Cross-country movers may also have varying rates, depending on where in the country you are moving. For example, a company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. A one-bedroom apartment costs approximately $1,500 to move across the country.

How much does it cost to move across the country?

The national average cost for hiring cross-country movers is $1,490-$2,220. A number of factors can affect the cost. One factor is the distance you want to move. For example, an East Coast-based moving company may charge $5 per cubic foot for consolidated moves along the East Coast and $6 per cubic foot for consolidated moves from the East Coast to the central states or the West Coast. Another factor is how many belongings you have. Most cross-country movers charge by the cubic foot.

The type of move you want is another consideration in cost. You can have your belongings moved exclusively and delivered on a set day, or you can opt for a consolidated move, which is less expensive. In a consolidated move your belongings are stored and transported with the goods of other customers who are moving to your general vicinity during the same general time frame as you. Your belongings should arrive within a one- to two-week window, rather than on a set day. If you want the cross-country movers to pack your belongings for you, the cost will also increase.
