Ran G. says, "I work for a construction firm and have multiple projects that involve additions & extensions of units, along with new builds. one of our jobs was extremely complicated and the client was very difficult and indecisive. I heard about Innate Design from a friend who owns a construction company and used them couple of times before. i met with Michael and scheduled a meeting along with the client to discuss options and ideas for the new house. the meeting went amazing, Michael managed meet all of the client’s expectations, gave her three different designs to choose from, and took care of permits with the city and county. we just finished construction todayand the client is insanely happy! We for sure will cooperate together in future projects, no doubts Thanks Innate Design and thank you Michael!"See more

Stephen S. says, "I was hooked up with Groundworks through Thumbtack which, as it turned out, was not a good match based on my project description. The estimator, Mark Odell, was a good communicator and very pleasant to deal with in coordinating the estimate, but upon arrival he saw that the driveway crack repair and resurfacing that I needed to have done was not something they specialized in. Rather than waste both of our times, he immediately referred me to a smaller company where he had known the owner for years, and assured me they could do the job and for a reasonable price. I contacted the owner, was favorably impressed, and have arranged for an estimate. I really appreciated Groundwork's honesty regarding this and not taking on a job not in their wheelhouse just to make some money."See more

Dan F. says, "We could only select three, but wanted to also include "responsiveness". Todd Pinkerton communicated every step...from confirming schedules to letting us know when he would be there to answering all questions we had. He was extremely professional and courteous...consistent in his demeanor each day. He knew the product and the process fully, letting us know the what/why/where/when of the process, product, and warranty. If we had assumptions on any step and/or finished look, he answered the why to reassure us of why it looked as it did. He was thorough; wanting to ensure our satisfaction. We would recommend Thrasher and Todd Pinkerton to anyone. We only wish Thrasher/Todd did roofing and deck repairs! Thank you, Dan and Paula Freeman"See more

Kelli M. says, "Larry, Toby and their team did an amazing job on our complicated project. If you have a project that seems “tricky” and needs problem solvers these are your guys! While the project took longer than we expected it’s because they wanted to do it the right way and make sure they were doing it in a way that met my (very high) expectations. Our project was moving our washer & dryer. It was in an area of our house that’s an addition the previous owners had added which wasn’t well insulated so needed a heat plate to keep the pipes from freezing. We were done with wanting to have to worry about our pipes freezing and keeping this heat plate on all the time. We had a few options for where to move it. The team looked at the options to figure out what would work best. They rerouted EVERYTHING to make this work and added a new door to our new laundry closet and doors to the old laundry closet that we had to remove earlier to fit a chest freezer. They’re happy to do all the detailed things but communication and explaining your expectations is key! When they couldn’t go through the ceiling due to how our building is built, they added a soffit and I wanted the trim to match the rest of the room. Larry went to multiple stores to find the right trim. When we found a few extra tiles for the closet, they were able to use those vs. rip up the whole floor. When we realized a 30 inch door wouldn’t allow for storage of anything laundry related in the closet, we widened the door to 36 inches and they added a shelf. I highly recommend Larry & his team and will be saving their number for future projects. Photos included: - New closet door with trim, vent add & painted to match painted to - New shelf and all the interior work done is hidden behind the washer dryer - water, vents, electricity, etc. and texturing it all to match our house - new tile at the edge of the closet where previously there was a wall - new double doors on the closet where our washer dryer used to be - amazing job patching the wall where there were ALL the things for the old washer/dryer - new soffit to hide the laundry vent There’s more work than I could take pictures of and sadly I didn’t take any before pictures but hopefully this is helpful!"See more

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much should waterproofing a basement cost?

Waterproofing a basement costs between $500 and $3,500, on average. The cost depends on several factors, including the type and extent of waterproofing, as well as the amount of labor involved to complete the job. For example, the labor cost to apply concrete sealer is about $3-$12 per square foot. And adding an interior drainage system costs approximately $700-$2,600.

Who do I hire to get my basement waterproofed?

There are a number of different pros who perform basement waterproofing, including specialized contractors and companies. Your best bet to ensure your basement’s waterproofing gets done the right way is to search for local professionals who can perform the service. This is easy on Thumbtack, where you can enter your zip code and the desired service, and then make your selection after viewing customer ratings, reviews and project photos.

What are the advantages of waterproofing your basement?

Waterproofing your basement can help you prevent major water damage caused by heavy rains — which means you won’t have to pay for expensive water damage restoration services. Waterproofing systems also prevent basement flooding and protect your possessions. And by keeping your basement dry, you can also prevent mold growth (and avoid having to pay for mold remediation services). Finally, your basement floor may last longer, your sump pump will work less and your home’s foundation will be more protected if you have a sound waterproofing system.

What should you use to waterproof basement walls?

When you’re having your basement waterproofed, it’s important to use the right materials for the job. A professional might coat your interior walls with masonry waterproofing products, such as sealants. The pro might also couple this with other exterior waterproofing methods, such as properly installing gutters, downspouts and drainage ditches. Talk to a basement waterproofing company near you to find out what method(s) they will use to waterproof your basement walls.

What is the best basement waterproofing system?

The best way to prevent moisture from seeping into your basement is to combine both interior and exterior waterproofing techniques. This method begins at construction by installing the water diversion infrastructure needed to move water away from your foundation and keep it out of the foundation materials in the first place. Then, a membrane should be installed inside to prevent any moisture that has made it past these defenses from making it all the way into your basement.

However, always consult with basement waterproofing professionals near you to determine which method is right for your home — and your budget.

Does basement waterproofing increase a home's value?

Basement waterproofing may or may not increase your home’s value — it all depends on your home and the conditions in your real estate market. However, by waterproofing your basement, you’re protecting your home’s value.  If you don’t waterproof your home, it could experience significant damage. And if you don’t repair the damage (which can be costly), you could lower your home’s value.

Is it better to waterproof a basement from the inside or outside?

It is far more effective to waterproof a basement from the outside through exterior waterproofing measures, such as installing drain tiles, excavating your soil and installing and cleaning gutters.

The term “interior waterproofing” is something of a misnomer because any steps taken in the basement’s interior are more to mitigate damage from water that has already made it through the foundation. Water is best stopped at the source — that is, it is best stopped from ever entering the concrete foundation by exterior waterproofing. However, interior waterproofing is still an important and effective step to take.

Does homeowners insurance cover basement waterproofing?

Homeowners insurance doesn’t typically cover basement waterproofing. However, many policies do cover water damage under certain situations. For example, if there’s been a sudden accident such as a bursting pipe, a standard homeowners insurance policy may cover the cost of repairs. On the other hand, the policy likely won’t cover water damage caused by poor home maintenance. Check your policy and chat with a professional to find out what your homeowners insurance covers.

What is basement waterproofing?

Basement waterproofing is the process of using various materials and techniques to keep water from infiltrating a house or building’s basement. Basements tend to be quite vulnerable to rises in the water table or to events like heavy rains. Waterproofing a below-ground basement might involve applying sealant materials to keep water out, as well as installing drains and sump pumps to remove water. Basement waterproofing is best performed during construction but is often done retroactively as well.

What is the best waterproof flooring for a basement?

There are several great options for waterproof basement flooring. For example, epoxy floors are waterproof but are thicker and sturdier than paint. Make sure the concrete substrate has been prepared for application.

Tile is a designer’s dream, giving you a moisture-resistant surface that’s infinitely customizable. Rubber sheets or tiles are also good waterproof options, particularly for playrooms, workout areas or laundry rooms.

Vinyl tiles and planks imitate wood or other materials very convincingly, provide moisture resistance and last a long time. And sheet vinyl is affordable and a great waterproofing solution for those in need of quick fixes.
