"Let me start by saying I loved my makeup for my wedding day! I felt beautiful and the makeup stayed perfect through the wedding, reception and drinks in the evening. Jamie is very professional and detailed with her work. I appreciated our time during the trial to get things mapped out so there were no surprises on the wedding day. I would whole-heartedly recommend Jamie for any event. My only issue came with time management. I take some responsibility for this, as I should have asked Jamie to come earlier to allow for traffic, setup, changing venues, set up again and buffer time. This was my first time arranging hair and makeup for myself and multiple other people. I relied on the professionals to recommend how long it should take and when to begin. In the end, we were running late and I had to tell my aunt that we did not have time for her to get her makeup done. I refused to run any later for the ceremony. Jamie does not rush which is a great quality, but I was disappointed that my aunt did not get any makeup for the wedding. Also, I was not offered a refund for my aunt’s session even though I had already paid for the service. Again, I would hire Jamie again in a second. Her work is amazing and I am truly proud of how I looked on my wedding day. My only suggestion would be to build in more time with her to make sure everyone who is scheduled to get makeup, does."

"How to describe the world’s greatest hairstylist...... Heather Hebron, guru of all beauty, artist and right hand to God’s every masterpiece, a natural talent with an aesthetic eye, solid knowledge and extensive experience in a multitude of settings. She will bring out your best you. Whether your goal is to gain a new look, reach your signature go to, try a refreshing trend, or to be beautified to your ultimate you as you celebrate any of life’s cherished milestones, Heather is your answer! Matched with an optimistic, bubbly, and vibrant personality, Heather also has an eye for beauty, an ear to take in your desires and needs, a heart to give you the best, and the ultimate passion led deliverance to each and every client. She will perfect and accentuate your beauty as a master make-up artist, brilliant colourist, and talented stylist whether it’s styling alone or cutting and shaping your hair. I met Heather 20 years ago and within the first 10 minutes I knew she was a friend for life and now she is family, not by blood but by choice. I have searched for the last 20 years for someone to cut, color, and style my hair with even a semi- closeness to what she does. I have yet to find a single person that compares. Heather can take an overdue and over processed head of hair to its best, the angle and technique that she uses will leave your hair at its healthiest and easiest to style and manage. She found the best cut and color for my facial shape and structure as well as for my lifestyle. I still cannot explain how magical her touch is. My hair became easier to manage and naturally layed and flipped under in a way that it had never done. I felt more confident and radiant especially after my husband took notice. To this day he still requests that I go to Heather for my next cut. With color and a brush, she transformed my dull limp hair into a rich, vibrant asset and my pre-aging, dry skin into a glowing youthful presence. I have watched as she brought a beautiful bride to radiate as a queen, a teenager battling the teen years received a minimal touch of color left her chair as a confident graceful young lady, a woman desiring a change to suit her new life was instantly renewed to her youth, a man looking for a new edge walked out feeling on top of the world, a lady battling hair loss received a cut and color of perfection that transformed her hair into the thickness she longed for. I could go on to list her expertise in editorial prints, highlight her addition to runways, applaud her triumphs at fashion week, celebrate her clientele after opening a salon, and acknowledge her ability to bring everlasting memories to a multitude of bridal parties, but I’ll put the ball in your court as you take seat into an experience of a lifetime and come out as the best you that you could imagine!"

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a hair extension?

A hair extension is a beauty product designed to give you the appearance of longer and/or fuller hair. Hair extensions are made of synthetic material or real human hair and are attached to your natural hair by a variety of techniques such as a weave (sewing), hot fusion, tape-in, cold fusion, bonding, metal clips, micro ring or micro loops, and more. The type of technique you select as well as the quality and volume of the hair you choose all affect cost. Hair extensions can last anywhere from three weeks to six months, depending on the application technique. For example, tape-in extensions may last approximately four weeks, while extensions applied using a hot fusion technique may stay in for up to six months. The hot fusion technique takes longer, costs more, and requires more training on the part of the hair stylist, but the result is more natural-looking extensions that can be washed and heat-styled with confidence.

What is a mobile hairdresser?

A mobile hairdresser is a cosmetologist trained to cut, color and style hair who can provide hairdressing services at remote locations. Often, mobile hairdressers are hired for events such as weddings, bachelorette parties, prom night, birthdays and other occasions. The hairstylist can come to your location to do your hair, or provide hairstyling for your group.

For events, mobile hairstylists more often provide updos and formal styles than highlights or hair color. Mobile hairdressers bring all the necessary hairstyling tools and products such as lotions and sprays to create your look. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110. Pricing for different services can vary greatly depending on stylist reputation, training and regional rates. For example, haircuts could range between $35 and $150, while hair coloring services could range in price from $65 to $200. Some mobile hairstylists may include the cost of travel in their fees, while other may have it as an added charge, such as 50 cents to $1 for each mile beyond their standard service range.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

  • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
  • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
  • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
  • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
  • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How much should you tip a hairstylist?

A hairstylist can provide you with a cut, color or highlights, or style your hair for an event. The national average cost for a hairstylist is $70-$110, but prices can vary greatly depending on the service you receive, where you live, and the salon’s or hairdresser’s reputation. A good rule of thumb is to tip your hairstylist 20 percent of your total bill. In smaller towns, 15 percent may be the norm, but in larger cities 20 percent is generally the baseline. If you frequent a salon where the shampooer, colorist, and hair cutter are all different people, you can divide that 20 percent among those service providers in proportion to the skill level and time required to do their job. Many hairstylists rent a chair from the salon and must pay a monthly rent to the salon owner.
