I'm just your average working mom - aren't stylists for fancy people? But I also have a demanding job, I travel for work, and as I get older I find that I want to look stylish and put together without investing a lot of time or effort into it. Sandi was a saving grace - she met my goals, helped me through the process and even gave me tips on how to make our time together work more efficiently (so that I could save money). I LOVE how easy it is to get dressed in the morning and pack for a trip with a variety of styles to choose from (weekend wear, everyday mom clothes, business casual for a random day in the office, and professional attire for business travel). I also generally wear a plus size. Sandi was kind and matter-of-fact about it, making me feel comfortable even when I felt a little self-conscious. I also feel reassured that I don't look frumpy, because I asked Sandi to tell me honestly if a piece in my closet was out-dated. I work hard for my money and I'm careful with it - but this is a value added investment for me that brings ease into my life. I'm already saving for her visit in early fall to do it again!

I never thought I needed a "stylist," but after just 30 minutes with Molly, I found so many more options for putting my clothes together and getting ready for work every morning. Molly found some great pieces that fit in with what I had, but updated my whole wardrobe at a price I could afford..

Anne has helped me twice with choosing clothes for our family pictures. She came recommended from a friend and was a big help in choosing colors that would help our family look good together in the settings we had chosen. The best part about working with Anne is that she really listens to our needs and personal tastes. For example, when I was looking at buying new boots to go with my dress she sent me a picture list of a variety of boots that she thought would go well with my dress as well as other outfits. It was just a starting point, but it was nice to see a selection and feel comfortable knowing that any of those that I chose would look good. She doesn't force her style on anyone nor does she expect you to like all of the things she likes--she helps you develop your own sense of style so you can feel confident with what you buy, what you wear, and how you shop on your own in the future. Anne is also great about working within a budget. For our family photos, we wanted to look good without spending a lot of money, and wanted to make sure that our clothes could be used again after the photos. She knew that my four-year-old would only wear one pair of shoes (she understands, as she has a kid of her own!) and was able to work around his shoes and my daughter's need to look like a princess, my husband's difficult-to-shop-for sizes (extra tall), and then of course, me. Anne is so patient and really enjoys what she does. I was afraid she'd think I wore yoga pants and look like a slouch all the time (because I do) but she was so complimentary on my closet and pointed out ways I could still look great even with the kids around (wearing prints to hide stains from the kids eating/crawling on me; showing me various ways to tie a scarf so I can wear it differently each time). I have to say I was skeptical of spending money on a stylist but I think I actually saved money by hiring her. She showed me how to use one thing five ways and opted for basic items to use regularly with a few accessories to change it up here and there. I can't wait to work with her again next fall!

Michelle's first course of business was to go through my closet and identify what clothes were out of style, unflattering, and simply didn't fit right. We discovered in a hurry that my size had changed for the better and I had 40+ pieces that were ready to be purged. She then put a game plan together based on priority and budget and went to work. During the shopping/trying on process she taught me skills and fashion tips that I can use everyday. I highly recommend her services and can't wait for my next experience.

Madison is amazing at this. She has the perfect balance of brand knowledge, fashion sense, trend awareness, vintage appreciation and sensitivity that gave me the confidence to totally re do my closet and let go to renew. Even without adding anything new my look was more confident and fresh. I have since added a few new items, but strategically, because she gave me a plan and list to refer to. She dove deep into my extensive collection and worked really hard and nonstop until she got through it all. She went beyond my expectations in taking care of all the dirty work that would have derailed me. Most importantly, she is a joy to work with and talk fashion with! She knew when to insist I let go of something, when to let me over ride her and when to insist I keep something. I respect her for that soft skill and appreciate her dedication to the job. She is the whole package!

I've been getting my hair cut with Jessie for about 6 years. I've never been disappointed one single time. As a guy, I've noticed that many stylists just whip out the electric shears and are done in 10 minutes and I'm not very happy with the outcome. Jessie always takes the time to do a top quality job!!

Marian was superb in helping our 16 year granddaughter with makeup, body image, color and style tips appropriate for her age. She did this by listening thoughtfully to Laura’s input, showing her what makeup to use for daytime that complimented her skin and eye color on half her face and then having Laura practice applying to the other side. She emphasized posture and tactfully stressed avoiding mannerisms that distract from a message. (Often those a Mom stresses but coming from a professional the words had an impact.) Shopping was fun because Marian’s pre-selected items prompted Laura to try new styles and colors which she liked. Laura returned home with new fashion knowledge, self-awareness and a back-to-school wardrobe. We would highly recommend Marian Rothschild. MR

Have you been overwhelmed by shopping for clothes? Have you spent a lot of money on fashion mistakes? Me too. Gosh it’s such a challenge to put together an outfit, much less a style. I’ve read books on how to buy clothes (good references, Kendall Farr, “The Pocket Stylist” and “How Not to Look Old’) and I’ve probably watched every episode or “What Not To Wear,” but there is just no substitute for hiring an expert. After reading a story in the Denver Post by Rachel Lefort I decided to contact her for help. It’s been a great working relationship ever since. Rachel’s services include one day of editing, sorting through styles that work or the ones that are dated, focusing on what colors work for you, and compiling a focused list to start bringing the wardrobe into a closet full of clothes that work together and that you look forward to wearing. We have gone through both my spring-summer and fall-winter wardrobes, clearing out all the stuff I haven’t been able to give away, because “they’re not worn out yet.” Rachel didn’t bring the garbage can -- she’s too tactful for that, but she will tell you frankly what works and what doesn’t, and why. I used to shop bargains, and it turns out I have a pretty good eye for individual pieces, but I had no idea how to put together an outfit. I didn’t know that I needed stylish elasticized belts to camo the meno-muffin that sometimes gaps between my pants and knit tops. I didn’t know that I needed skinny belts to accent an outfit, or that gauzy scarves in the right colors would pull together multiple outfits. Day two is a day of shopping – believe me 5 hours goes fast. I had given up on finding shoes and just kept wearing the same old shoes. I now have a great selection of wearable, fashionable shoes. We shopped Nordstrom’s, Zappo’s and Marmi Shoes. The third day is spent showing you how to style your new clothes, shoes and accessories so you know what you are doing and how to put the combinations together. I can say unconditionally that my experience with Rachel has been great. She is knowledgeable, has great training in the fashion industry, she has a great eye for color, style and function, and knows which pieces really make a difference. Rachel showed me colors that work that I never gave a second look in the past. I now know what to look for when I go shopping alone, and how to put an outfit together. The proof is in how you look and feel when you walk out the door. I know that I spent my money well, no fashion mistakes, my clothes relate, and it’s easy to get dressed and pull together an outfit. It’s worth it to hire a well qualified expert. It’s true, that you can reach a place where the colors and styles all work together, you can walk out the door feeling confident, looking stylish, edgy and put together. You can’t go wrong with Rachel Lefort on your team. She’ll turn you into a budding fashionista like me.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I find a personal stylist?

To find a fashion consultant, start by browsing portfolios online. Styling is a visual art, so finding a fashion consultant who fits the style you desire is key. Great personal stylists aren’t confined to one style, but if you’re seeking a hipper, fashion-forward vibe, you’d do well to find someone with a modern portfolio, while a fashion consultant with a consistently refined style could be a better fit if you’d prefer a more conservative look. Reading reviews is also helpful for learning more about the fashion consultant. Research their training, background and years of experience. After reviewing websites and Instagram accounts, meet with the stylist in person to learn how well they fit your personality; some fashion consultants offer a free phone consultation prior to hiring. Before hiring, make sure you clearly understand their terms of service and payment.

        What do image consultants do?

Image consultants help people look and feel their best by coaching them on their clothing and beauty choices. An image consultant can be hired for a one-time occasion, such as an awards ceremony, big birthday party or photo shoot. The consultant will recommend clothing, hair and makeup to suit the occasion either using either what the client owns or taking a targeted shopping trip. For a complete fashion consultation, the image consultant will assess your wardrobe, your lifestyle, and what you hope to present to the world, and will then determine the best colors, styles and cuts for you. You can get help streamlining your professional appearance, adjusting your style after a change in body size, solidifying a new look, or finding clothing to fit one area of your life like work or weekends. Image consultants also provide closet edits, going through your clothing and paring out what isn’t right for the look you’re trying to achieve. Personal shopping is another service that image consultants provide. After an image assessment, they can either shop with you or shop on your behalf to find you key pieces you need.

        What is a fashion consultant?

A fashion consultant is a paid professional who will advise you on what to wear and how to wear it to fit your desired lifestyle or career goals. A fashion consultant can provide many services including personal shopping, closet audits, beauty consultations, style consultations and ongoing seasonal services. A fashion consultant often has a design or fashion background (although this is not required) and an innate sense of style. It’s easy to get stuck in a rut with the colors, cuts and designs we think suit us. A fashion consultant comes in with fresh eyes and provides constructive feedback to guide your style choices.

During your initial meeting, your fashion consultant will take stock of your current clothing selection and learn what you hope to achieve. They’ll identify core wardrobe pieces you need, as well as advise you how to wear items together. Many consultants create style lookbooks for their clients explaining things like exactly which shoes to wear with what pants and how to accessorize each look. Fashion consultants are a great option for people who are updating their style due to age, career changes or body changes, or who are just ready for a new look and feel. Most fashion consultants charge by the hour, with some offering packages and others working from a retainer.

        What is a personal shopper?

Personal shoppers take the pain out of having good fashion. Personal shoppers are paid professionals who work with women, men or children who need style assistance. If you are stuck in a fashion rut, are unsure how to dress in a way that flatters your body, need to revamp your image, or want a more professional career look, personal shoppers can help. Personal shoppers identify the look their client wants to achieve and purchase the necessary clothing and accessories to achieve it. The process often begins with an initial consultation with the client to understand their style goals. This consultation may include a closet “audit,” an assessment of the client’s current wardrobe to see what items can be eliminated and what must be purchased to achieve the desired style.

The client and the personal shopper can shop together, selecting items as a team. The personal shopper may also shop on behalf of the client, then bring all items to the client for a final decision. A third option is pre-shopping, where the personal shopper reaches the store(s) ahead of the client and sets aside clothing for the client to try on, expediting the whole process — a win for anyone who hates spending time in the mall. Personal shoppers can also be hired for one-time events such as weddings, vacations or birthdays. You can also enlist a personal shopper to do your gift shopping for you. Overall, a personal shopper is an investment in making good style choices.

What does an image consultant do?
