After an interview process we selected Clinton as accountant and tax advisor for our Gerull Labs LLC (g-labs) optical instrument and related software app business. His thorough manner and competence related to accounting (and tax matters especially) have been a great help. We would recommend him highly to anyone for accounting and/or tax related work and look forward to a long working relationship.

I called Melissa to see if she could teach/coach me with learning quick books for my rapidly growing swimming pool company. I needed help ASAP and urgently. It is tax season and she is very busy but still managed to get me into her office within a few days. I have been meeting with her once a week for over a month now. She has helped me in so many ways and has even caught some mistakes that my current accountant has made. I sometimes need help with something throughout the week and she is always quick to answer my calls and questions. I would reccomend her to family and freinds. Shes affordable reliable and very familiar with the whole accounting world. Thank you and I look foward to continue working with you! Terra

We gave Sandra our very detailed taxes, ie: stock sale, sale of business along with personal after our longtime accountant retired after he filed an extension for us. Sandra picked up right where he left off and finished in a timely manner. She was able to pick up right

Finally, a Bookkeeper who really knows and understands QuickBooks. I hired Shanah a week ago and warned her that the previous bookkeeper left the books in a mess. Within a short time she had the books corrected and now my CPA will speak to me again. This one is a keeper and worth every penny. Thank you Thumbtack for hosting true professionals. Diane Franz

If you're a small business owner, then you know time is precious. I was able to turn to Simplicity Consulting for help with my bookkeeping needs. Pam suggested a great service to use, and was instrumental in helping me learn how to use it, which saved me valuable time. Pam knows her stuff, and I felt confident in the information I was provided. I highly recommend trying them out if you're in need of a consultant. Cori Gray | Co-Founder The Mod Cabin

Working with Maia Wealth has been a great experience for me! I was initially skeptical of enlisting the services of a financial advisor, but Maia Wealth has helped put my concerns at ease. I like to follow Dave Ramsey from time to time and believe he has some good advice. One of his pieces of advice was to find a financial advisor that doesn't just manage your investments but helps teach you along the way. The advisors at Maia Wealth do that. I do my own research from time to time, and when I have questions about an investment opportunity, if it is a good financial choice, the advisors at Maia Wealth will talk me through it and help answer my questions. At the core of it, the advisors at Maia Wealth care, and they will help you get to where you are going financially. They are personable and care about the success of their clients. If you're looking for someone, or on the fence like I was, I encourage you to check them out; you won't be disappointed.

Michael Ailor did a great job preparing my taxes. He was very thorough and professional. I would have no problems having him work on any other tax related matters I may have. Additionally, I would easily recommend him to others.

My experience with Damian was flawless. I realized I paid $25 more than the average person pays for a basic 1040 tax return, but he picked up my documents and had my return back to me in 48 hours, keep in mind this was April 13,2016, 2 days before D day. He is a great communicator, went over every line with me and delivered as promised. I am having him do my 2016 return.

Josh and his team at Lincoln Wallace did an excellent Job answering my questions and learning about my business. When we reached out to Josh we were having some IRS issues with our business, along with just not having the time to handle our daily/weekly bookkeeping and accounting needs. Josh started working right way with us right away and did a fantastic job handling every request we ask of him. He was able to provide excellent advice, and act as our monthly accountant/partner for a low monthly fee. I don't know what I would do without them now. Highly recommend.

I had been looking for a reliable accounting service that I could trust to work in my best interest. The previous accounting firm I worked with was ok but they were hard to get a hold of, especially during the tax filing season. I first started working with Legacy Tax Service in 2016 when they audited the final accounts for my company. I was impressed by their attention to detail from our very first interaction. Their auditors were quite knowledgeable and asked me why I wasn’t making use of tax breaks that would significantly decrease my tax liability. At that time I was more worried about filing my returns on time and didn’t have a clue about these tax cuts and told them so. Not only did they manage to get my taxes filed on time, they also claimed the exemptions which saved me quite a bit of money. That is when I took them on board completely as my accounting partner and I am quite happy with their service.

As a small business owner who wears many hats, I lean on Karen to keep our accounting organized and accurate, and she comes through every month on both fronts. I guess we could keep the doors open without her, but then that's the point: I would be guessing. With Katen, I know. Her efforts give me peace of mind that I appreciate to no end. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      Who can file my taxes?

Any individual with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN) is eligible to file your income taxes on your behalf. However, this doesn’t necessarily mean they will be the best candidate to provide the help you need with your income tax preparation. The IRS explains that CPAs, attorneys and enrolled agents are all allowed to legally represent their clients before the IRS. They have a more thorough understanding of tax code than an individual operating solely with a PTIN or an Annual Filing Season Program participant who provides their services on a volunteer basis. Consider the complexity of your tax return and what level of expertise you’ll require. Before entrusting someone with your private financial and personal information, do some research on their qualifications. The IRS has a searchable database where you can verify the background and credentials of your income tax preparation professional. Once you have selected someone, ask about their service fees and confirm their availability. Then provide them with all the documentation they require, including W-2s, 1099s and more. Always ask to review the paperwork before it is submitted, and never sign a blank tax return.

      What is an accountant?

Accountants are financial professionals who have received an accounting degree from a four-year university or college. By trade, accountants prepare, maintain and examine the financial statements of an individual, business or institution. An accountant prepares reports for tax purposes and can also perform audits of public companies. Common tasks include creating budgets, analyzing profits and losses of a company, processing payroll, preparing financial statements for company leadership, and creating and maintaining financial database systems for a company.

Accountants do not automatically have a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation unless they have passed the Uniform CPA Examination and received the proper license. Regardless of whether they are CPA certified or not, accountants can assist businesses and individuals with bookkeeping and financial reporting, while CPAs are more knowledgeable in tax codes as a result of the CPA licensing examination and continuing education requirements. CPAs are also eligible to represent clients before the IRS if audit support is required, while a non-CPA accountant is not. Academic background, years in the field and professional reputation all can affect an accountant’s rates.

How much does it cost to hire an accountant?

Accountants’ rates vary based on their education, licenses, experience, and the work for which they are being hired. An accountant may charge an hourly rate when a company or individual needs their services on a short-term basis, such as when performing an audit or requesting assistance setting up a financial database or process. Hourly rates can range as widely as $40 per hour to $300 or more per hour, depending on your geographic location and the accountant. Check out the average hourly rate for accounting services in your region.

Accountants may offer a package rate for weekly, monthly or annual services to reward ongoing customers. Many accountants offer online services where small businesses can access online accounting software and payroll assistance, and the accountant — for a monthly or other recurring fee — provides financial analysis and reporting of their numbers. For basic monthly accounting services, an accountant might charge anywhere from $75 to $500 or more, depending on what was included in a given package, the size of the client’s business, and the complexity of work requested. Nationally, full-time staff accountants earn between $40,000 and $80,000, depending on experience and other factors.

How much does it cost to get taxes done?

Hiring a professional to help with income tax preparation can be priceless. Pro help can mean no mistakes and a maximized tax return. The cost to get your income taxes done depends on the professional you hire. Tax attorneys or in-demand CPAs will often have the highest rates for their services. Next in the pricing tier are enrolled agents, who will usually have higher rates than individuals solely working with a preparer tax identification number (PTIN). Nationally, the average cost of income tax preparation ranges from $150 to $190. Income tax preparation prices can also vary based on where you live and the complexity of your tax returns. Here are some examples of average income tax preparation prices from an enrolled agent:

      • Taxpayers filing only a W-2 tax form: $50.
      • Taxpayers filing a W-2 along with additional tax forms such 1099-INT and 1098-E: $150.
      • Taxpayers with several tax forms and one or two additional considerations such as a rental property, investment transactions, K-1 income, 1099-MISC or a simple small business: $225.
      • Taxpayers with multiple activities (rentals, K-1 income, small business, etc.), several stock transactions and more: $395.

Nationally, the average hourly rate nationally for a tax prep professional ranges between $150 and $450.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
