Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to install carpet on stairs?

The number of stairs you want carpeted in your home will directly affect your carpet installation cost. Putting carpet on stairs generally increases the labor time and requires a higher degree of detail than laying carpet flat. Where you live in the country also plays a role in your carpet installation cost. Carpet installation companies in smaller towns with a lower cost of living and a lower cost to do business (insurance, company vehicles, employee labor, etc.) can usually offer their customers lower rates than companies in large cities where the cost of living and the cost to do business are higher. Carpet pros will often quote you a flat rate per stair once they do a site visit to provide an estimate. They’ll take into account the size of each stair you want carpeted (including both the step and the riser), and what type of stair it is. For example, the cost might range between $3 and $10 per stair for labor only. On the higher end of the spectrum, box stairs or staircase stairs with spindles that must be worked around might cost between $15 and $25 per stair.

How much does it cost to carpet a bedroom?

If you’re building a new home, remodeling, or ready for new carpet in your bedroom, you’ll want to know carpet installation costs. Here are the factors that affect the cost of your new bedroom carpet:

  • Installation cost per square yard: From under $2 to over $6. Carpet companies have a labor cost per square foot for installing your new carpet. Depending on where you live in the country, that rate can vary greatly. This rate does not include the cost of the carpet.
  • Type of carpet: from $1 per square foot to $20 or more per square foot. The fibers that make up your carpet will have a direct effect on cost. As an example, specialty wool carpets may start at about $10 per square foot, while a manufactured fiber like nylon may be about $2 per square foot.
  • Removal of old carpet: from $1 to $4 per square yard. Old carpet is labor-intensive to remove and also costs money to dispose of or recycle. The cost to remove carpet will depend on how much carpet you need removed and whether your installation pros offer a discounted rate for installing your new carpet at the same time.
  • Subfloor repair: from $40 to $70 per hour (plus materials cost). If the flooring underneath your old carpet is damaged, it must be repaired before the new carpet is installed. Many carpet pros can offer this service, or you can hire a handyman to handle the job.
  • Type of carpet pad: $1 per square yard and up, depending on the thickness. The cost to install carpet pad is typically included with the labor cost per yard of installing the carpet itself.

How much does it cost to install carpet?

If you’re ready to bring new life into your house with a makeover from the ground up, you’re ready to learn more about carpet installation costs. Installation costs vary greatly, depending on a number of factors such as the type of carpet, the number of square yards, any necessary repair work, the number of stairs you have, and where you live. Due to these variables, the national average cost of carpet installation ranges between $200 and $4,500.

To start planning for your new carpet, measure roughly how many square yards of carpet you’ll need. Research the main carpet styles and materials you like to get a feel for what they cost. Nylon carpets are typically the least expensive, and wool is one of the higher-end carpets. Prices per square foot might range from under $2 to over $10, depending on materials. Count the number of stairs you want carpeted; each one might average between $3 and $10 (or more for box steps). Carpet removal can be an added cost as well, averaging $1-$4 per square yard, depending on the company and regional disposal costs.

How much is the cheapest carpet?

If you’re looking to reduce carpet installation costs, there are several ways to save. Start by considering your carpeting needs. Manufactured materials such as polyester and nylon will be cheaper than natural fibers such as wool. From big box retailers, starting prices for olefin-based carpet are approximately 50 cents per square foot — making the cost under $5 per square yard. Indoor carpets made with olefin fibers are typically the least expensive on the market. Keep in mind that olefin fibers are not as soft on bare feet as other fibers, so are often used in areas like basements, playrooms or indoor patios. Nylon and polyester are good options to reduce carpet installation costs while still creating a cozy feel. The face weight, fiber construction and density of a carpet all affect the cost per square foot. The cheapest nylon or polyester carpets can start at just under $2 per square foot, making them about $18 per square yard. Lower-cost carpet tends to wear out more quickly and show stains more easily, so avoid light colors and vacuum regularly to keep the fibers clear of dirt that might age it too quickly.

How long does carpet installation take?

You can expect carpet installation to take anywhere between several hours and a day. The length of the job depends on the scope of the project, room size, the type of carpet being installed and the condition of the work space. If your carpet crew needs to move furniture or work around other contractors, expect the project to take longer. Odd-shaped rooms with nooks and carpeted closets will also add time.

How do you plan for a carpet installation project?

Start by researching your options and figuring out the following:

  • What kind of carpet do you want?
  • How big are the rooms where you plan to install the carpet?
  • What type of backing is required?
  • Does the subfloor need to be prepared?
  • Do you need to make any repairs to your flooring?
  • When do you want the installation process done?
  • What is your budget?
  • Who is the best company or contractor in your area for the project?

Next, remove furniture from the room and give it a deep clean. Hire contractors to remove the current flooring if necessary. Schedule your carpet installer to have access to the room for as many days as they need for the project.

How do you measure for carpet installation?

The first step is to measure your room’s length and width, adding 2-3 three inches to each dimension to account for doorways and  trimming. Measure additional sections, like the other part of an L-shaped room. Multiply the length times width to get the overall area of carpeting. When measuring for stairs, make sure to measure all the way around the nosing of the stairs to account for extra carpeting needed.

What is tackless carpet installation?

Tackless carpet installation (or stretch-in installation) involves installing carpeting without the use of tacks. With this method, your flooring contractor will place the carpet over separate carpet cushions and secure it in place with a power stretcher, according to the Carpet and Rug Institute.

Very pleased with the carpet installation that Bill & Dave finished for us. They installed 3 bedrooms, & removed carpet. Bill responded quickly to the post on Thumbtack & quoted us a very competitive price. Started work promptly as scheduled and price quoted was what we paid. We also hired them to finish a Laminate floor that we had started which is in progress now. I will post pictures when all finish! Rhonda

Doug was great to work with! He was able to come out for a quote ASAP, ordered the carpet quickly and then worked to make sure the installation could fit our schedule (evenings and weekends). He also went above and beyond to match a carpet sample we liked from HD from the mill. We LOVE our new carpet and are really happy that we chose Grace Flooring. We will definitely be reaching out again for our future projects!

The quote was a bit higher than I had received previously, so I send a text thanking them for their time. That seemed to be a challenge to the owner who was determined to win our business. He came by and promised perfection. We were laying carpet over hardwood floors that had quarter rounded trim. Dan, the owner, said crew would remove the trim, bring padding etc. He complimented me on my carpet purchase saying it was a beautiful great quality carpet. Sounded great. That was the end of anything great. The night prior to my install, it snowed really hard and temperature was 5 degrees so I cleared out my entire main floor of my home so installers could cut my carpet in warmth and keep carpet dry. That was at the request of the owner and his wife. The 2 man crew arrived with zero notice ( I had to text owner for ETA and was told they will be there in 10 minutes but I was 15 minutes away when they notified me so I got there ASAP to an irritated crew). Imagine my surprise when the crew said outside was “easier for them” so they rolled my brand new carpet in the street over the snow. They didn’t start sweeping off the chunks of snow until I called the owner wondering why they were treating my carpet like it was a door mat. They left the front door open for 5 hrs and my furnace ran non stop, so installer opened our storm windows upstairs where he was working and left them open. That was the least of it. They inform me they are finished and walk out. So I immediately go to inspect the install. Shock. They didn’t remove the trim first. The stairs looked like I let a grandchild install them. I call the owner. He asks for pictures. I send them. Then.. nothing. No word from company until I follow up asking how they plan to fix my flooring. His solution, stretching my carpet to cover their mistakes. I ask him when he’s coming to see what happened. He quickly snaps “ why would I come, I’ve seen the pictures”. Because you send unskilled installers was my reply. He then said my carpet was thin and the quality was likely to blame for poor install. Umm ok. Same carpet they used in 2021 Parade of Homes and same carpet he complimented the week prior to his crew messing up install. And.. he sent the same installer that messed it up to begin with but with a new helper. But, they were a no call no show the day I was told they’d be here to correct the floors. So, add lost wages to that install price. They overstretched my carpet. Used my overage I purchased for something else to somewhat fix stairs. I had paid for everything at beginning of install. The owner followed everything up with a request to get paid again because he forgot I had already paid. Trust your gut. I told him no thank you to begin with. He’ll win you over with empty promises but that is as far as he is going. He literally told me “ we don’t live in a perfect world, but I promise your carpet will be perfect”. It’s not however I realized it’s as good as I was getting from this company. These are pictures of how they left the first install. I did see on Google that the company rebuts any negative feedback, so I’ll be waiting.

We are getting ready to put our house on the market and wanted to update our living room carpet before doing so. Dan responded right away, walked me through some options and pricing over the phone, and we were able to get new carpet installed within a few days! The install quality is great and the project was right on budget. We had a few issues on the install but Dan communicated right away and worked very hard to make everything right. I always appreciate that in a company and was happy I could support a local business. I highly recommend Floors by Tomorrow!

The team at Mile High Carpet & Floors were great. They listened and understood my needs, then recommended the right product. I'm happy with the end result and would suggest them to anyone. When they showed up to begin the job they started installing a product that looked different from what I picked out. Bill said he got a deal on a better product, felt bad but asked that they use the other material I picked out. Bill apologized and immediately handled it. Without hesitation Bill and his team ripped out the stuff they had just in stalled and when to get the replacement. Do yourself a favor and hire Mile High Carpet & Floors! Thanks Bill!
