Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who installs fences?

Fencing contractors are the best choice when you want to have a fence installed on your property. While there are several types of professionals who can likely handle this service — including handymen, landscapers and general contractors — a fencing contractor has the experience to know what could cause potential problems in the long run. This might include wet spots, vegetation or other issues with the land.

When choosing a professional to install a fence on your property, make sure they have credentials and experience.

What's the cheapest fence to install?

The cheapest type of fence to install is (usually) a chain-link fence. Averaging between $7 and $12 per linear foot, this type of fencing is strong and secure and allows homeowners to maintain visibility while adding protection to their property. Chain-link fences are constructed from steel coated in aluminum, vinyl or zinc for weather resistance.

You can get a more accurate cost estimate for your chain-link fence by contacting professionals who specialize in installing these fences.

Read our cost guide on fence installation costs to see prices for other types of fences.

How much does it cost to put up a chain-link fence?

Chain-link fence is one of the most affordable options for adding safety and value to your home or business. The national average chain-link fence installation cost is $2,750. Chain-link fences are relatively simple for the pros to install; a fence of less than 150 linear feet can often be put up in under one day. A good rule of thumb is to add an additional workday for each additional 100 linear feet of fence to be installed.

Chain-link fence installation costs are affected by the fluctuating cost of steel, regional labor rates, the height of fence you select, and the features you select, such as a powder-coated finish. The industry standard is galvanized steel, which is rust- and corrosion-resistant. Galvanized chain-link fence installation cost, including labor and materials, is typically $12 per linear foot. For a more contemporary and elegant option, black powder-coated galvanized chain-link fence might cost approximately $15 per linear foot on average, including materials and labor. For industrial sites or businesses, 10-foot-high galvanized chain-link fences may provide additional security, but also have an added cost. A 10-foot-high chain-link fence could cost $17-$18 per linear foot, including labor and materials.

How much does it cost to install a wood fence?

Help define your property line, protect your home and yard, and boost your curb appeal with a new wood fence. The national average for wood fence installation cost is $3,250. Wood fence installation costs will vary based on your geographic location, the type of wood you select, the height and style of wood fence you desire, and the condition of your property. Pressure-treated pine is a common and attractive choice that is usually resilient against rot and bugs. Cedar is another budget-friendly option that, although more expensive than pressure-treated pine, can be more affordable than redwood or teak. A wood fence requires maintenance to ensure its long-term health and beauty, so keep future staining and painting costs in mind when you’re calculating fence installation costs. Here are some examples of how height and material affect the approximate cost of wood fences:

  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $15-$17 per linear foot.
  • 4-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence: $13-$20 per linear foot.
  • Cedar fence: $18-$25 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, double-sided (meaning both sides are uniform), pressure-treated pine fence with 6x6 posts: $25 per linear foot.
  • 12-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with custom detailing: $75 per linear foot.
  • 6-foot-high, pressure-treated pine fence with a custom lattice top: $30-$50 per linear foot.

How much does it cost to install a fence gate?

Adding a gate to your fence can be a practical way to provide access to a yard, work area or outdoor living space while ensuring safety and privacy. Gate installation costs will vary based on the gate material you select, the size of your gate, whether you install a fence at the same time, and any special features you’d like to add. Standard opening size for a single-wide gate is 4 feet; a double-wide gate is 8 feet. A small gate may be for decoration; a double-wide gate can be mounted on a rolling caster system to allow access for cars or wide loads. Here are some examples of average fence gate installation costs:

  • 4-foot, single-swing chain-link gate: $100 for materials and installation costs.
  • 28-foot wheeled chain-link gate on a caster system: $800-$1,000 for materials and installation costs.
  • 4-foot, single-swing wood gate: $75.
  • 8-foot double-wide wood gate: $150.
  • 4-foot white vinyl walk-through gate: $300–$400 for materials and installation costs.
  • 8-foot, double-wide white vinyl gate: about $800 for materials and installation costs.
  • White vinyl gate fence more than 8 feet wide: $1,200-$1,500 for materials and installation.
  • Arched black powder-coated aluminum pool gates: $175-$200 per gate.

Does adding a fence increase property value?

Fencing may increase the value of your property. However, this depends on what type of fence is installed and the purpose of the fence. For example, a fence may be worth more to a property that needs it to diminish noise coming from a highway. Fences may also be a plus to dog owners who require a backyard fence.

When deciding whether to install a fence in your yard, consult with your realtor or real estate expert. They can help you prioritize home improvement projects that will add value to your home.

Can I use digital payments to pay for fence and gate installation and repairs?

Currently, many fence and gate professional use common digital payment services like Venmo, PayPal, Square Cash, Google Pay, Zelle and more. Many more are quickly adopting the platforms as COVID-19 continues to force companies to digitally transform.

Contact the professional beforehand to discuss whether you can make digital payments, and take all measures to comply with social distancing recommendations. Compare fence professionals side-by-side online to see which ones accept digital payments.

Do fence installers offer remote or virtual services?

Because fence installation needs to be done in person, fence professionals usually cannot offer remote services. If you come across profiles that state they offer remote services, message the fence installer to see what those services include.

For consultations and meetings, ask the fence professional if you can coordinate a virtual consultation in which you explain the project to them through video, photos and drawings transferred online. If not, it may be wise to postpone the project and book an appointment at a later date

How much is a redwood fence per foot?

A redwood fence is a long-lasting home investment that can add beauty and major curb appeal to your home. Redwood fence installation costs are higher than those for pressure-treated pine or cedar, due to the relative scarcity of the wood. Pricing can vary for redwood fence installation costs based on regional labor rates, current prices of redwood planks, the height and linear feet of the fence, and any custom designs or features. Redwood fences, in addition to being beautiful, are naturally more resistant against bugs and rot than less hardy or dense woods. Redwood fences also generally fare well in wet or humid climates due to their natural oils — which also make them easier to maintain. Materials costs per linear foot for redwood planks can range anywhere from $6 to $20 or more, depending on grade, quality and height.

How much does it cost to install a vinyl fence?

A new fence can mean added home value, increased curb appeal, and improved home security. The national average vinyl fence installation cost is $4,600. Vinyl fences have a number of appealing qualities such as their durability, their lasting good looks (they don’t weather like wood does), their versatility, and the fact that they require little to no maintenance such as staining. Fencing companies typically charge per linear foot for vinyl fence installation. They calculate their estimates based on materials to be used, height of fence, linear feet of the proposed fence, and the accessibility of the terrain. If the workers need to level the land before work begins, your vinyl fence installation costs will probably increase. Vinyl fences are typically more expensive than wood or chain-link. For example, one company might charge $19-$22 per linear foot for a basic 6-foot vinyl privacy fence. Another company might charge $25-$35 per linear foot for standard vinyl fencing, while decorative fencing with custom detail could increase that cost to $50 per linear foot. For a 6-foot-high white vinyl privacy fence with two walk-through gates (plus demolition and disposal of the old fence), the cost of the total project could run $8,000. A 4-foot-high, 36-linear-foot white picket vinyl fence with one gate could cost $2,600.

James and his crew did a great job with our fence. It took us a while to get all of the paperwork done through our HOA, and when we finally got it done, James immediately ordered parts and his crew was out to replace our fence in no time. He gave us a great quote, and followed up with a repair job quickly on our neighbors fence that was slightly damaged in the install (not really the installers fault, just bad fence design). I'd highly recommend them to anyone looking for a fence replacement.

A Plus fencing did an excellent job, and we would absolutely use their services again! They were friendly and professional - really a pleasure to work with. They came to the house and gave us an accurate estimate, they scheduled a time for installation that worked for us, and they did a great job installing our fence. Our neighbors have commented on how nice the new fence looks, and we love the new gates. We were also very impressed with how fast the installation team worked. Thank you!

Working with Jorge was smooth, timely and professional. From the competitive quoting process to emailing afterwards to settle on final design and installment date - everything was perfect. We had over 250 feet of fence removed and a new 6 foot horizontal fence installed and we couldn't be happier. The work is solid and completed in just a few days. They even visited a couple weeks later to complete some additional adjustments requested afterwards free of charge. We're very thankful that we found Top Notch Fence and plan to recommend them to anyone seeking a well built fence with zero headaches or surprises. Thank you!

The job was a 6' high cedar fence around a large yard. Todd accomplished it in a day and half at a very competitive rate. I would highly recommend him if you are considering a new fence project. The speed and quality of the final product was great! He also worked with a neighbor to install a large gate to match my fence and they are pleased with the final product as I am.

We had about 100ft of horizontal fence installed. The end product looks great. There were some delays and ultimately took a little longer to complete than we had hoped. The final product looks great and Edward completed the fence how we hoped.

I had a massive fence project with around 260 feet of fence to install. Once we got all the materials and we were able to schedule around weather the fence went up in three days and it looks great! Him and the guys who worked for him were respectful and cleaned up after themselves like they were never there. I would definitely regret him to friends and family.

Had this guy do a fence around my property. He came with a crew and had a great fence up in two days. I asked him to then come back and install a garden fence. He showed up by himself, used really crappy materials, all of the fence boards were crooked, one of the posts he put in is so badly bent that it pulls my fence around nine inches into the back yard, looks like it's falling down, crappy job of staining, and only used on nail top and bottom, wheat with the crew there were two nails top and bottom. Nowhere near ok with me.

Pros: The over job was done in a quick manner, no pressure to pay until the job was complete, quick responses during the job when emailed, flexible, and an excellent price that beats to competition. During the middle of the project we requested a garden fence be installed. The company was open tot the changes and installed a garden fence to our specific requirements that looks great! Cons: Old screws were scattered on the ground not picked up and a panel had to be redone because the old pickets were used from the old fence. Overall, this was a good experience and the company fixed the cons before payment was received. We will use this company agin in the future to repair our deck.

Rodney and Casey were a pleasure to work with. They installed 250 feet of linear fence for me at a new residence I built. They did it in 3 days, were able to start when I needed them and worked diligently with me on staying in my budget while not compromising quality. They do the work themselves and quality is top priority for them. They use screws along the entire fence and use a wood preservative, which should prolong the fence life. They went above and beyond in every area - including leaving the garage cleaner than they found it! I would not hesitate to call Rodney again for any fencing work (or hardscaping, which is Casey's specialty!)

Clay and his crew did a terrific job on our fence. The workmanship was first rate and the pickets they used were also #1 quality. His pricing was very reasonable compared to some of the other bids we received and he was very responsive and easy to work with. You may have to wait a bit for the fence because they are very busy with jobs right now but it is worth the wait. There is a reason they are so busy and its because of the quality of their work. We had a fence installed about 2 years ago on the other side of our yard by a large fence company in town and their workmanship and pickets couldn't compare to Arbor City's. We would definitely use Arbor City again and highly recommend them.

The name says it all, those guys are truly top quality. That goes for punctuality, professionalism, workmanship, materials used, and over all experience. They went above and beyond in each step of the project. For example, they removed a ton of extra dirt before installing the sod, to make sure the lawn is leveled. Instead of using 4x4s, they made my post out of 6x6s, to make the fence last longer and look beefier. They matched the stain perfectly to an existing pergola. Thanks to them I have the nicest fence in the neighborhood. Thanks Top Quality Fence! You guys are the best.

Our fence had blown over on a windy day. Big Blu was the most responsive option by far, getting back to me immediately with an estimate and providing me with immediate availability during a holiday week. His estimate was also far better than other estimates I received. He did a great job on the fence he installed and we love it. He worked in darkness to make sure the job was done well and correctly. Highly recommend and I will be using him again in the future.
