My daughter initially wanted some assistance with ACT prep. After our first round of working with Marc, we immediately sought him out to assist her with SAT prep! He is amazing and is able to tailor his tutoring for the student.

We are pleased to provide a reference for Colleen Urban. Colleen tutored our daughter, Julia, at Basic Skills Tutoring in Seattle while Julia was in middle school and high school at The Northwest School (2006-2011). Colleen began as a math tutor but her role expanded, to providing help in organization, study skills, time management, and test preparation. Julia benefitted enormously from the assistance and counsel that Colleen provided. She helped Julia tackle algebra, geometry and calculus, as well as preparing for physics, chemistry, and biology exams. Colleen was always patient but firm with Julia. Their relationship was close and friendly. Julia never complained about going to tutoring and looked forward to her time with Colleen. As well as attending a challenging college prep school, Julia was a serious ballet dancer. Her after-school hours were often taken up with classes and rehearsals. Colleen was very flexible—always finding some time for Julia, even if it meant staying late—when she needed it. Colleen made a lasting impact on Julia’s life and academic career. Julia graduated from Bennington College, with a 3.8 GPA in 2015. She was extraordinarily successful in college and has made a great transition to life after college. Last year, she taught in a French high school. This year she is writing poetry as well as working full-time as she prepares to apply to graduate school. She tackles difficult projects with discipline and enthusiasm. She has the confidence to work independently and the patience to deal with the inevitable frustration that results from challenging herself. These were qualities that Colleen saw in Julia and worked hard to bring to the forefront. For this assistance and support, we continue to be very grateful to Colleen.

Carrie helped my daughter prepare for her SAT retest and we are very excited about the results. She really understood the test rather than just teaching random skills for high school.

    Dominate the GMAT

      About

As founder of Dominate the GMAT, I have been teaching students how to score really high on the GMAT and get into the business school of their choice since 2004. Our online GMAT prep program is designed for people who want to learn the relevant content tested on the GMAT, as well as the all-important tricks, tips and strategies for "dominating the GMAT" -- i.e. getting right answers at all cost -- but who want a bit more flexibility than most traditional classroom courses offer. You need a high GMAT score, but you also want a life, right? That's what our company is designed to help you with. At Dominate the GMAT, we also offer customizable GMAT prep. If you just want lessons on certain topics or content areas to supplement your at-home study, you can find that here. If you're just looking for some real-life GMAT practice tests, you've come to the right place as well. And if you desire one-on-one tutoring with an expert GMAT instructor -- well, of course we offer that, too. Here's what one former client had to say about her experience with Dominate the GMAT: "The Dominate the GMAT video lessons I used were a tremendous supplement to my GMAT prep and gave me a much better understanding of what the GMAT tests and the best strategies to beat it! Brett's teaching style makes the material so easy to understand. I wish I had found this course before I paid over $1,500 to another company — I would have just used the “Dominate the GMAT” videos because the material taught was so comparable to that of the other company's and was available for a much lower price." -- Lauren White, San Diego, CA

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I prepare for the GMAT?

If you’re thinking of enrolling in graduate school to earn your MBA, it’s time to start thinking about preparing for the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT). Working with a GMAT tutor is for many people a wise investment to help you strengthen the academic areas you may be weak in and improving your overall test score. A GMAT prep tutor should teach you not only the kind of information you need to know for the test, but the best test-taking strategies. The GMAT tests you on four categories: quantitative, verbal, integrated reasoning, and an analytical writing assessment. Cramming is probably not going to give you good results for this standardized test; give yourself between two and six months to prepare, focusing on your most challenging areas first. Successful GMAT prep means planning ahead and studying thoroughly. Those students who reported studying under 75 hours were more likely to score 400 or lower on the test, while students who studied 121 hours or more were more likely to score 700 or higher on the test. Hiring a GMAT prep tutor can range in price from under $50 to over $200 per hour.

How long does it take to prepare for the GMAT?

Pros recommend planning to spend two to six months for GMAT prep. The test itself is only 3.5 hours long, but your score will have a major effect on what schools grant you admission. If you’d like to be considered for one of the top-tier schools, it’s recommended to score at least a 700. Your goals for your MBA can help drive your GMAT prep. GMAT tutors will guide your study plan and help analyze your strengths and weaknesses. GMAT tutors also offer professional guidance and insights on strategic GMAT test-taking. Avail yourself of free GMAT prep software that provides sample test questions for you to practice. The creators of the GMAT recommend creating a structured study plan detailing when you will study each day and what topics you will study during each session. Take into account what style of learning works best for you (solo study, one-on-one tutoring, group tutoring, study groups, prep courses) and proceed accordingly. The test is made up of these four categories, each with an allotted time:

      • Analytical writing assessment: 1 topic, 30 minutes.
      • Integrated reasoning: 12 questions, 30 minutes.
      • Quantitative: 37 questions, 75 minutes.
      • Verbal: 41 questions: 75 minutes.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
