Before my review of Pipecraft Plumbing, I need to explain the nightmare plumbing and gas situation I found myself in. I hired contractor in February 2015 to install gas lines and replace the galvanized plumbing in my circa 1954 house. The work was still not completed in February 2016 and the contractor was not responding to my telephone calls. I decided to call in someone else to finish the job and Pipecraft responded to my Thumbtack inquiry. Jacob inspected what had been done--despite specifying to the first contractor that I wanted a permit pulled for code inspection, Jacob informed me that the installed that gas lines did not meet code; I confirmed this fact with the city inspector--the installation was totally wrong and had safety issues and subpar materials had been used. Jacob provided me with a quote to redo the job and said he could have it done in 5 days. He is a master plumber and provided me with his license number, a copy of his liability insurance and references. He and his staff tore out everything the previous plumber had done, cleaned up after work each day (after having workers who initially stated that they worked "clean" and then did not--this was very much appreciated), and completed the job in five days. He communicated with me frequently to confirm how I wanted the job completed and when I was making decisions and thinking about changing aspects of the job mid-way through he provided me with the pros and cons. I had no reservations about leaving him with a key to work at the house while I was away from home. Jacob was involved all the way through the final city inspection, When the inspector asked for some minor additional work on the first inspection, Jacob promptly completed the work. A general contractor came to my house on some other business and commented that the gas line work was beautiful--I never thought of gas lines in terms of "beautiful". I would highly recommend Pipecraft Plumbing for all of your plumbing needs.

I originally hired KMA to do some work on my gutters, but it ended up that the job required a contractor. He was very gracious and actually came out two times to verify if he could do it, and did not bill me. I found this to be very honest and refreshing.

Any and all questions were answered with patience and professionalism to me and my wife. Other contractors needed to restore the areas affected were also referred by the plumbing contractor. This provides a seamless return to our daily routines.

I hired David for a few projects last summer when we were doing a bunch of updating. First he extended our gas line to the kitchen for our new gas range. He also replaced the A/C and then installed a new sink for us as well. His team was great--very friendly, professional and considerate. Some contractors seem like they want to get it done and get out, but they were obviously invested in doing it right and they responded to every special request we made. When the range didn't quite fit the gas line, David even came back to adjust it and did not charge for it. And he stayed in touch with me to make sure we got the A/C warranty stuff done right. I'll contact him again when we need help.

As a result of frustration from another master plumber coming to my home and telling me I couldn’t convert my top-mount sink to an under-mount sink without them cutting into my walls to get to the pipes; I decided to reach out to Johnathan from J&N Plumbing Services for a second opinion. Once I sent a request for quote with pictures and described the situation, Johnathan quickly responded to me within a matter of minutes; giving me a quote and confirming that he could successfully reconfigure the plumbing to a new under-mount sink without having to cut through into the walls. He also verified the new under-mount sink dimensions were compatible with my counter layout and the new faucet I wanted installed. Additionally, he was able to identify a problem with my existing plumbing configuration causing smelly sewer gases to leak into my dishwasher (yuck!) He also identified a double shut-off valve that shouldn’t have been installed in the first place. He made these accurate assessments all from pictures I had sent him! When he arrived to my home he very professional on time, He quickly reconfigured the plumbing to the new under-mount sink, installed all new valves, installed my new faucet, corrected a leak, reconfigured my dishwasher connect to my garbage disposal, while correcting the sewer gas smell causing my dishwasher stink! I am extremely pleased with J&N Plumbing Services. Bottom line, Johnathan was amazing to work with! He had great communication throughout the entire process. He was very professional and served with excellence. He was punctual, extremely knowledgeable, honest , transparent, with a heart of a teacher. His prices were cost competitive with other quotes I had received. I am extremely pleased with his work, he is top notch! I wouldn’t hesitate to do business with him again or recommend him to friends and family.

Our forty year old tri-level home was in need of plumbing updates and repairs in three bathrooms and the kitchen. The baths were completely remodeled. All work was done to strict local code and passed inspection with compliments from the city inspectors. Project was scheduled such that at least one bath was available at all times and with minimum disruption to home activities. Remodel was done to our plan, but with very helpful suggestions and advice from the contractor. Even with unexpected events and obstacles in the existing construction this project exceeded all expectations and significantly improved the appearance, livability and value of the property. The effort was done according to budget and the contractor had an exceptionally pleasing disposition and ethic which was rewarded with a monetary gratuity from us. I would absolutely highly recommend their services.

technician was good. However, when moving the equipment after the cleaning was completed, sewage water dripped off the machine. I've had other companies use towels/paper towels to absorb the liquid as the cable is being pulled back into the unit

I used kevin the plumber after getting ripped off by 20 other ones. I had him help with 2 rehab houses, and was so impressed i had him help me at my own house, (i never bring contractors to my house but for Kevin i did.) Honestly, his work quality and cleanliness are better than anyone i used. His prices are fair but not dirt cheap, but the 2 places to never cut a corner are electricians or plumbers - you will pay 10x more in the end.

Daniel and his team helped my wife and I transform a house built in 1906 into a modern masterpiece. They did an UNBELIEVABLE job at a very reasonable price. At first, I was a little hesitant to use them as one reviewer perviously gave them a wretched review, but I couldnt be happier with the end-results. They completely remodeled the basement, added 2 bathrooms, re-did another bathroom, dry walled multiple rooms, built an amazing egress window well, installed a water heater, sewer ejector pump, kitchenette, and laid tile/ flooring throughout the house. Separately, on a personal level Daniel and his crew are some of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE FENCE ABOUT USING DANIEL AND HIS CREW DONT BE....FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME AND ID BE HAPPY TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK. This certainly wont be the last time we use him. I was amazed at the service I received from Prime. The fee quoted was, while not the least expensive, nevertheless extremely reasonable and inclusive of a trip charge and incidentals. Nathan was on time, knowledgeable, very polite, professional and responsive; answering a few related questions and providing both an emailed invoice for this service and a quote for possible future work. All in all, I could not be more pleased! Prime is now my plumbing / HVAC contractor of choice - I will recommend Prime to neighbors, friends and family!

We hired Flawless Floors to handle some challenging plumbing work with re-routing of pipes in the bathroom, as well as tiling the entire shower wall. Gilbert has been excellent to work with; punctual, honest, friendly, and his work is exceptional. We couldn't be more pleased. Highly recommend hiring this contractor. You will not be disappointed. Photos of the new shower tile work will follow soon!

I contacted Marc to install a new bathroom exhaust fan. He was able to do it within a day. The fan I purchased was too large, but he offered to make the adjustments and added on a small additional charge. His work was quite neat and he finished in a timely manner. He left the area very clean, and his price was very fair. I had contacted two other contractors who would have charged double the price. I would definitely recommend him.

Mario (and his son Eli) were timely, worked hard and long hours. Mario was very accommodating, receptive and responsive to my pickiness. There were some somewhat difficult repiping issues with my 1933 plumbing and Mario did an excellent job working around bathroom and shower connections. Very pleasant. I would have him back for other plumbing projects - such as water tank replacement. His prices were fair and reasonable.

Daniel has a wonderful heart. He has a few employees, which allow him to take-on more than one job at a time. However, one employee became sick, which set our project back a few days, as Daniel was forced to work on his own, or with less help. We were in a crunch, as we had another contractor scheduled. Although he became ill, himself, Daniel pressed-on and was able to complete our project, just in time. Daniel does nice tiling work and Has reasonable prices.

Completed three jobs for us. 1) added below the surface pipe drainage from existing close-to-house sub pump of about 15 yards. Solved problem of way too much water in back yard 2) finished, with insulation, dry wall etc. the unfinished garage 3) took AC compressor off mounting bracket attached to house and built and placed on concrete pad to lessen vibration and noise. including re-doing outside compressor pipes etc. All jobs done very well and solved existing problems. Roy explained every step and process and why. Jobs were completed timely and as inexpensively as possible. Would re-hire, and would recommend to anybody, anytime.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

What are plumbers and what do they do?

Plumbers are skilled professionals who are trained to install and maintain pipes and systems for drinking water, sewage and drainage. They usually have trained through four- to five-year training programs, which include apprenticeships, via trade schools and community colleges. Plumbers’ areas of expertise typically go beyond pipes to include mathematics, blueprint reading, plumbing codes and water distribution. They handle plumbing emergencies, such as broken pipes or clogged drains, and install and maintain everything from a new piping system to a replacement faucet. Plumbers also know how to install bathtubs and showers, toilets, water heaters and dishwashers. Plumbers may work on residential or commercial sites, sometimes designing and laying out a pipe system during construction.

Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

  • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
  • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
  • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
  • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
  • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
