We found Damon through our initial use of Thumbtack. Damon was one of five contractors responding to our request for tree removal service. After meeting with each contractor (all of whom are quality folks) Damon stood out to us. Not only did Damon offer an extremely reasonable quote, he was as advertised: responsive to communications, prompt regarding visits, honest and open minded, thorough when performing work, and went above and beyond when cleaning up after the job was complete. We have finally found an honest and dependable inidividual who we can count on for future chores and tasks. THANK YOU Damon!!!

As a long distance landlord finding a contractor who is reliable and an excellent communicator is invaluable. Zack is someone who went above and beyond my expectations for this project, and I would recommend him wholeheartedly to others seeking landscape services. Zack was very responsive from the initial request and provided an accurate estimate of the work that was needed. He was fair in his pricing and verified everything before proceeding with the work. Zack was able to perform the work quickly and was courteous to our tenants. Zack's workmanship was excellent and the finished results look better than I had expected. He provided a personal touch and consultation that was greatly appreciated for this particular job.

The Sprinkler Squad was great! Debora was very helpful with scheduling and communicating with us as far as when the techs would be here to help. Anthony is super personable and knows a lot about irrigation systems. Our system had not been used in years (per the previous homeowner) and he got our system up and running in no time. We had a few zones capped (had to dig up some landscaping) and Anthony came back out to make sure that our landscaping was "back to normal". I highly recommend The Sprinkler Squad and will use them again for all of our irrigation system needs.

I needed a large section of my yard graded and leveled along with a play area installed with playground mulch in preparation for a new playset/clubhouse. Pro Landscape Concepts came to me highly recommended from neighbors on the Nextdoor app. Martin did a VERY professional job! He and his crew were AWESOME to work with! Any time I had a question or needed to be accommodated in some way, they came through for me. They were also very punctual and followed up immediately to any phone calls. Extremely trust worthy. I’m pretty picky about things looking perfect when I hire someone and the project turned out excellent. I have already begun getting quotes from Martin on other projects in my front and back yards. I positively recommend Pro Landscape Concepts for any and all landscaping needs.

Antonio's landscape will be my go to company for anything related to landscaping and sprinklers. I would recommend this company in a heartbeat to anyone considering sod installation or sprinkler repair. Fernando and his crew were very professional, helpful, and the quality of service/work done was phenomenal. He and his crew take pride in their work and the end product shows that. Fernando even helped with our sprinkler system. We've had two companies prior to Antonio's landscape work on our sprinklers and the only thing we got from them was ripped off! Fernando, with Antonio's landscape, came and repaired two sprinkler heads, installed another, and replaced most of the nozzles to make sure that our sod had sufficient water coverage; and his price was so reasonable. He seemed mad that the other companies (who did nothing to help us) charged us so much! If you are considering sod installation, definitely go with Fernando at Antonio's landscape. His sod price was about the same as other companies we received quotes from, but he was able to come and complete the install 3 weeks faster than any of the other companies and the quality is just superb.

WOW! I could not be more impressed with Lee's Trees! The guys did an AMAZING job removing an absolute beast of a weird plant/weed thing from our front yard. My usual landscaper didn't even want to try, and Lee's Trees got it out of there quickly, cleaned up everything, and were super easy to talk to and work with! I will for sure be using them again! Thanks guys!

Let me start by saying that I almost didn’t hire this company due to their lack of reviews (Joshua’s company is relatively new). However, it was one of the smartest things we’ve done in hiring for the home renovations (inside and out) we’ve been doing over the last year. Josh, takes great pride in his work and it shows. He has a portfolio of beautiful landscaping/outdoor features/designs that he’s built, and will happily show them to you. He has pictures of an amazing water feature he designed and built that you should ask to see! For our job, he went above and beyond many times and has a great eye for detail. He’s honest, easy going and he does what he says he’s going to do (and more!). His pricing is fair and reasonable. If you have any outdoor work to be done, including patios, decks, water features, concrete work (and the list goes on), etc, don’t hesitate to hire Precision Construction. Feel free to contact me with any questions or if you would like more information. I would love to chance to give Joshua help in getting his company going. He deserves it! It won’t be long before he’s turning work away.

We hired A Better Edge 4 or5 years ago. They put a stamped edge around 2 large flower beds and a tree ring for us. We love it. It was beautiful when they did it and after all this time is still beautiful. The color has faded somewhat but we still are very happy with it. In fact, we are looking to do more in the back yard this spring. The crew was awesome. They went above and beyond. We have had people stop and ask us what is was and who did it for us. We were happy to give out " A Better Edge" recommendation. Can't wait to have the back yard done.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
