Emailed one day, onsite the next, repairs done within 48 hours. Couldn't ask for better. Went the extra effort to find everything that was wrong, that, despite the price it ended up costing, will hopefully save in emergency repairs in the future. Tim explained in basic terms what's wrong/why it's wrong/how to fix/what needs to happen and worked with me to find an appropriate solution that was going to work for me and my budget. Showed up on time, kept things clean, and was friendly to work with. While I'm hoping that takes care of the problems for a while, I'd hire again and recommend for others who need repairs/replacement for furnace, water heater or AC work.

I needed to have a pipe repair inspected and an outside water bib repaired. I asked Jason to replace the pipe that was repaired, but he told me there was no need to replace the pipe. I appreciate his honesty because replacing the pipe as requested would have doubled the amount I paid for the water bib repair. Jason was always prompt and courteous with his communication. I will definitely be doing business with Jason in the future.

I placed a Thumbtack request for a gas line installation for my gas dryer and Mike, the owner, from Plumbaroos responded right away. Due to a change in schedule, Mike was able to come out at the scheduled time the next day, give a free estimate, and do the work in just a few hours. Mike was very knowledgeable and efficient, not to mention very personable. He also helped me move the dryer itself from the garage to the laundry room downstairs! I wouldn't hesitate to heartily recommend Mike and Plumbaroos for their plumbing and gas line needs!

As a result of frustration from another master plumber coming to my home and telling me I couldn’t convert my top-mount sink to an under-mount sink without them cutting into my walls to get to the pipes; I decided to reach out to Johnathan from J&N Plumbing Services for a second opinion. Once I sent a request for quote with pictures and described the situation, Johnathan quickly responded to me within a matter of minutes; giving me a quote and confirming that he could successfully reconfigure the plumbing to a new under-mount sink without having to cut through into the walls. He also verified the new under-mount sink dimensions were compatible with my counter layout and the new faucet I wanted installed. Additionally, he was able to identify a problem with my existing plumbing configuration causing smelly sewer gases to leak into my dishwasher (yuck!) He also identified a double shut-off valve that shouldn’t have been installed in the first place. He made these accurate assessments all from pictures I had sent him! When he arrived to my home he very professional on time, He quickly reconfigured the plumbing to the new under-mount sink, installed all new valves, installed my new faucet, corrected a leak, reconfigured my dishwasher connect to my garbage disposal, while correcting the sewer gas smell causing my dishwasher stink! I am extremely pleased with J&N Plumbing Services. Bottom line, Johnathan was amazing to work with! He had great communication throughout the entire process. He was very professional and served with excellence. He was punctual, extremely knowledgeable, honest , transparent, with a heart of a teacher. His prices were cost competitive with other quotes I had received. I am extremely pleased with his work, he is top notch! I wouldn’t hesitate to do business with him again or recommend him to friends and family.

Larry was able to come out on short notice to replace a shower mixer and install a shower pan. He was about his business the whole time, talking us through the process, making sure that all the drainage was fit to handle the shower, and making sure the shower pan was properly secured. Will hire in the future!

Josiah, owner of Papa’s Home Improvement is professional, personable and knowledgeable. He & asst Pablo arrived as scheduled each day and after we discussed projects went right to work. Josiah did several plumbing repairs/upgrades including fixing a leak someone else couldn’t despite several attempts. They painted interior doors & frames - cleaned & prepped surfaces properly and applied paint cleanly. Required 2nd coat although white on white. They did numerous handyman tasks including some outdoors. Josiah made suggestions that benefited projects. Josiah & Pablo are honest & trustworthy – important when bringing strangers in your home. They are friendly and VERY hard workers who go above and beyond to ensure customer satisfaction. They did extra work without charge to make sure I was happy. I recommend Papa’s Home Improvement for a broad range of tasks and projects.

My washer ended up having a leaky valve. He installed and repaired the washing machine and dryer for less than the next quote to just install. ( including the cost of the valves) Highly recommended, trustworthy, very fair price.

4/1/2018: Quoted $149 to fix drainage issue. Assured that Acension had the capability and tools to solve my issue. 4/11/2018: Charged $589. Assured the issue was resolved 5/23/2018: Drain is still not still not working. I have concluded I have been scammed. Do not hire this contractor! He will take the money and run without solving your problem. Worst experience I have ever had with a contractor. DO NOT BELIEVE YOUR INITIAL ESTIMATE. Horrible customer service.

Daniel and his team helped my wife and I transform a house built in 1906 into a modern masterpiece. They did an UNBELIEVABLE job at a very reasonable price. At first, I was a little hesitant to use them as one reviewer perviously gave them a wretched review, but I couldnt be happier with the end-results. They completely remodeled the basement, added 2 bathrooms, re-did another bathroom, dry walled multiple rooms, built an amazing egress window well, installed a water heater, sewer ejector pump, kitchenette, and laid tile/ flooring throughout the house. Separately, on a personal level Daniel and his crew are some of the nicest individuals you'll ever meet. IF YOU ARE EVER ON THE FENCE ABOUT USING DANIEL AND HIS CREW DONT BE....FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME AT ANY TIME AND ID BE HAPPY TO SHOW OFF HIS WORK. This certainly wont be the last time we use him. Avis did great work! This is an older home with roots and a teenager (need I say more). The main sewage line was clogged pretty good. Eugene did not leave until he made sure my issue was completely resolved. His NEW equipment/ plumbers snake is definitely an asset in his profession. Would highly recommend :)

I called Mr. Donner for a sprinkler blowout. He did an excellent job and a more than fair price. Additionally, he caught a safety issue that I was unaware of and offered me free lawn and home maintenance advice. For a first time home owner, this was greatly appreciated. I would recommend his services and will use him for future home repair/maintenance needs.

Rob and Tom demoed and installed a new kitchen backsplash, did some grout work, corrected an electrical problem, repaired some drywall and, on their own initiative, fixed a couple of other minor things that needed fixing. I really liked both guys. They showed up when they said they would. They approached our projects creatively and professionally. They were direct, helpful and good-humored. The best part is they did a very good job. They are detail-oriented, obviously taking pride in their work (they took pictures of the finished project to show others). And, they were careful to clean up after they finished their work. The review prompt suggests saying what they could have done better. I honestly can't think of anything. The bottom line is that we are very happy with their work, and would recommend them to friends (and use them again ourselves).

Kyle made this as painless an experience as calling a plumber can be. He was informative and very efficient in his repairs to my plumbing. Price point was also spot on out of about 8 quotes I was bidding for the work. I recommend to friends and family and will continue to do so as his workmanship is second to none.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How often do you clean a septic tank?

For homeowners with a septic system, it’s important to have a regular septic cleaning schedule. To protect ground and drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency recommends residential septic cleaning every three years. Many septic system companies state that you can maintain a healthy system with regular septic cleanings every three to five years. In addition to cleaning, a septic tank inspection once a year will uncover problems and can save you thousands in cleanup and repair.

When waste goes into your septic system, it separates into three parts. The solids (sludge) drop to the bottom, wastewater floats in the middle, and a layer of scum rises to the top. Regularly scheduled cleanings prevent the sludge in your septic tank from building up and clogging your tank, leading to an overflow. Pricing for a standard septic cleaning ranges between $200 and $500, with the national average cost at $315. It’s easier, more cost-effective, and better for your home health to keep your septic tank maintained.

    Who pumps septic tanks?

Septic system professionals pump septic tanks. Pros in different states will have different licensing and certification regulations. Make sure the company you hire is licensed and certified, is a legitimate business, and has the appropriate insurance. Damage to your septic system could cost thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair, so it’s best to hire a qualified professional from the start.

Using an industrial-strength vacuum hose connected to a tanker truck, the septic tank company will pump out the contents of your tank. First they break up the scum of the top layer, then mix the sludge (on the bottom) into the wastewater for removal. To get all the sludge and scum from the tank, pros may use a tool called a septage spoon that loosens stubborn waste from the sides of the tank. After the tank is hosed down and empty, it is inspected for any cracks or leaks that could lead to trouble in the future. The waste in the truck is then transported and disposed of at a waste management treatment center, a cesspool or an approved dumping site.

When should you clean a septic system?

Experts agree that you should clean your septic system every three to five years for optimal system health and safe water. You should also have it inspected every year to catch minor issues before they become major. If you think you may be overdue for a septic cleaning, here are signs that you should call a pro immediately.

    • You’re at capacity: If the bottom of the scum layer is within six inches of the bottom of the tank’s outlet or if the top of the sludge layer is within 12 inches of the outlet, your tank needs to be pumped, according to the EPA.
    • It stinks: If you can smell wastewater, call a pro right away to clean your tank, pipes and field.
    • Sewage backup: Raw sewage backing up into the pipes in your home is no fun. The pros can pump out your pipes, clean your tanks and clear any clogs, but it will be a complex and messy job.
    • Pooling water: Water collecting around your tank or drain field can be a sign you need to clean your septic system.
    • Super grass: If the grass above your septic system drain field suddenly gets vibrantly green and lush, the septic tank leak could be leaking sewage and fertilizing your lawn in unwanted ways. Call a pro to inspect it right away.

How much is it to clean a septic tank?

Nobody wants their septic tank to back up. Regular septic cleaning and pumping is important to keep your ground and drinking water protected from harmful bacteria. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends septic system cleaning every three years. The national average cost for a septic tank specialist is $315. Costs for septic cleaning may vary based on where you live, how large your septic tank is, and how long it has been since the last cleaning. If it’s been many years since you’ve had your tank cleaned, the process of breaking up and removing the solids may take longer and could cost more. Typical residential septic tanks range in size from 1,000 to 2,500 gallons. The price range for septic cleaning usually averages $200-$500, with varying by tank size. Repairs or replacement parts will also add to your cost. To keep your septic tank in good health between cleanings, only flush approved items such as toilet paper, and don’t rely on your garbage disposal for composting. Items that don’t break down easily (like lemon rinds or feminine hygiene products) can back up the septic system, leading to clogs and overflow. If you smell the unmistakable odor of sewage or can see sewage bubbling up above your drain field, call for a septic cleaning immediately.
