Steven and Chris showed up on time and worked hard on the job for most of one day. We just purchased the house and the landscaping had been neglected some so was overdue for some maintenance and care. One tree was too close to the house - less than a foot from the foundation - and was removed. Other trees needed to be pruned away from the house and roof, and some structural pruning done. Several shrubs were way overgrown and needed to be cut back and thinned. A couple were crowding and mis-shaping a mugo pine, so they were removed. They did a lot of work, were efficient, and cleaned up well when they were done. The price was reasonable and we and the plants are pleased with the results.

Sheldon was knowledgeable, professional, courteous, and timely, in his communications, and in his execution of our project. I felt like I was working with him all the way, and not "just a customer." The job was completed as we discussed and on budget, and the area completely cleaned, like the work had never been done! I could not be more pleased and will definitely contract with him again.

Nik arrived to survey the work needed and quoted a very reasonable price for his 2-man crew to remove a dead tree and trim up all the rest. All three arrived promptly as promised and these pros worked hard all day. Cleanup was perfection, all debris hauled away. Cannot recommend these folks highly enough. They are professionals in every way, knowledgeable and hard working....VERY reasonably priced. Don't call anyone else! I know that I won't, and am looking forward to fruit tree pruning this winter. Thank you N&D!

Very competitive pricing. We used COVA for the removal of some pesky aspens in our back yard, as well as some pruning of another tree. Excellent job: recommended even by the arborist at Tagawa Gardens in Parker CO (who will be planting replacement trees shortly).

Scott is professional and dependable. He has done a few jobs for us--pruning, planting, and removing. He evaluated the health of our trees and advised us about what we could expect. He took out one tree that was mostly dead and planted a new one in its place. He took out another tree that had been damaged in a late snowfall. We talked with him about trying to save it, and he felt the chances of it making it were small, which is consistent with what others had told us. On the jobs involving pruning or tree removal, he cleaned up, leaving us with no mess. We were very happy with his work.

I had a stump removed in my front yard. I got Luke's number on Thumbtack. Luke and I coordinated the job via text message. Luke was able to get Jeremy and a grinding machine to my house on short notice to accommodate my hectic work schedule. Jeremy showed up exactly on time, and completed the job to include raking and sweeping up debris. Jeremy was kind enough to offer advice on a replacement tree species and location. He also had pruning advice on other existing trees. Jeremy is super knowledgeable, professional and seems to be all around good dude! -Thanks!!

HIRE SUMMIT TREE CARE TODAY! My semi-rural property is just east of Lyons, CO. I have a variety of trees around my house and outbuildings. The trees needed quite a bit of work - some major tree removal and some seasonal pruning. Over the years, I have had several tree 'professionals' do work on property. The results have been mixed. My test is to walk the property with the tree expert to see if they even know the names of the trees, much less know what to do about them. SUMMIT TREE CARE IS THE BEST! Dan knew all the trees, gave me a detailed estimate of work on the same day and committed a work schedule, which he kept. Summit Tree Care did two full days of work on my property. The big tree removal was done with 100% skill, professionalism, the right equipment (crane, chipper, chain saws, trucks) and the pruning was done with a trained eye for both the practical and the artistic. Clean up was extraordinary. I will hire Summit Tree Care for all the tree work on my property. Bonus: Dan declined do any tree work, which he considered out of season for the health of the tree. Imagine a real arborist! It's a business with heart. When I asked how old the tree was, that had to come down, he told me 52. He had counted the rings of the diseased tree. He cared. TRUST SUMMIT TREE CARE with your trees. I will.

I asked Erik to completely clean up my landscaping. I asked him to trim all my shrubs, prune all my trees, and rake up all of the pine needles. He said he would be at my house at 10am and he expected to be there until about 9pm that night. Sure enough, he was pulled up to my curb at 8:45 and later that evening, I actually forgot he was still here. At 8:30 I went out back, and he had actually climbed up a tree and was still pruning branches. He showed up on time, stayed as long as it took, and my yard was spotless. I can't ask for anything more. I would recommend Erik to anyone. Sincerely, Martin K.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
