Veronica L. says, "Alfa Home Improvement remodeled 2 of my bedrooms and kitchen. In both bedrooms, they repaired holes in the walls, installed ceiling lights, ripped up carpet / installed vinyl flooring, painted ceiling, doors, trimmers and walls. Both rooms are absolutely amazing and 1000% better than before. In the kitchen, they removed ceramic tiles and plywood and replaced with new plywood and matching vinyl flooring. They painted ceiling, walls, and trimmers. They also installed brand new cabinets for us, which looks like a whole new kitchen! Working with Alfa Home Improvement was a very pleasant experience. A very nice and respectful team. They take pride and work hard to meet your needs. When we decided to redo our livingroom, I will definitely give Alfa a call."See more

C C. says, "If you’re looking for a team to do your flooring (especially if you’ve had some subpar experiences with contractors) make sure you read this. My fiancé and I just bought our first home 2 months ago so there’s a lot to do. Originally I brought in a team to replace, sand, and stain 2 rooms on our primary floor. The guy was great at the start, his installers were even pretty good, but by the time it came to staining it was a nightmare and the owner literally disappeared. To this day, haven’t heard from him and the job was never completed. So we found Luis on Thumbtack and brought him in, knowing full well the issues we had with the job 75% done. He pointed out every single flaw (which was impressive right off the bat), explained how he could help without potentially redoing the job, even offered his own personal time to put down the shoe molding in the 2 rooms he wasn’t working in. He told us what to expect and was particularly sympathetic to how cynical we had become about trusting contractors implicitly. The job was to sand and stain the remainder of the primary floor (minus the kitchen). His communication didn’t wane as the job progressed and he made sure we knew what was going on with each step of the process, reassuring us that quality was their top priority throughout. While Luis was present at the start and checked in multiple times throughout the week, we were left largely with a 2 man crew that were just as polite, punctual, and communicative as Luis. I was even impressed by the fact that these guys showed up at 8, took maybe a 30 minute lunch break each day, and didn’t stop until their tasks that day were done. They never left without finding one of us and letting us know, and always cleaned up after themselves each day. To make things even more interesting, we pivoted twice. Once to add a bathroom to the job and the other we discovered after sanding down what was previously a very dark stained floor, revealing that a family room was 75% white oak (like the rest of the primary floor) but 25% of it was hiding red oak. Luis and his team gave us realistic expectations but had a solution that could potentially work. He never nickled and dimed us, added a minimal fee for the supplies, and the results were even better than we expected. In the end, we cannot recommend L&M flooring enough. The quality was exactly as they claimed, they were efficient, and arguably most impressively; their professionalism never wavered despite the changes and the fact that they also had to clean up mess from the previous team. We absolutely love our floors and could not be more thankful that we got what we had envisioned thanks to them. You can bet that when we redo the kitchen, L&M will be getting the call!"See more

FAQs

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you clean epoxy floors?

Cleaning an epoxy floor is an extensive job in any warehouse or larger space, making it a job best left to a professional who can get it done quickly and effectively. However, there are several bits of maintenance you should perform by yourself in between professional cleanings. For example, you can remove grit from the floor with a broom, dust mop and/or shop vacuum.  Make sure you wipe away chemical spills like automotive fluids before they become permanent spots on the floor.

What are the advantages of epoxy flooring?

Epoxy flooring has several advantages. The biggest benefit is its durability. Epoxy floors are highly durable and tend to outlast standard flooring systems. A few other pros include:

  • It’s also easy to maintain due to its glossy finish and seamless nature.
  • It can be highly customized. You can choose different colors, designs, effects and even inserts like coins, flakes and other details.
  • It's  affordable — far more so than hardwood and other types of flooring. This value continues to pay off over time.
  • It can be slip-resistant with additional additives.

What are the different types of epoxy floor coatings?

There are many different options for epoxy floor coatings, including:

  • Water-based epoxy coating
  • 100% solids epoxy
  • Polyurethane topcoat
  • Metallic epoxy
  • Mortar epoxy coatings
  • Self-leveling epoxy coating
  • Self-dispersing epoxy coating
  • Flake epoxy flooring
  • Mortar epoxy coating
  • Graveled epoxy coating
  • Terrazzo epoxy coating
  • And more

Talk to an epoxy flooring specialist in your area to see what your options are, and get advice on the best type to use on your floors.

What is the best epoxy garage floor coating?

The best epoxy garage floor coating is a premium multi-layer epoxy system. When you hire a professional, you can choose more durable options like 100% solids epoxy floor coating, which is great for repelling stains and abrasion. Choose a clear epoxy or polyurethane top coat to protect this layer.

How thick is epoxy floor coating?

Epoxy floor coatings typically range from 0.011 inches (11 mils) to 0.375 inches (375 mils). Thin coating systems have wide variability in their performance and are generally best for low-traffic areas, with the exception being high-performance topcoats that can handle heavier traffic in low-impact situations. Oftentimes, thicker coatings mean your project might be more expensive but will last longer. Talk to epoxy flooring professionals near you to discuss the pros and cons of thick and thin coatings.

What is the best flooring for dogs?

Waterproof or scratch-resistant flooring is typically the best flooring for dogs. This includes:

  • Vinyl: Vinyl may not add much to the value of your home, but it is resistant to scratching, stains, dents and accidents. Plus, it’s an affordable option.
  • Tile: Tile is generally water-resistant and scratch-proof, and more affordable than hardwood or stone.
  • Laminate: Laminate is not truly waterproof, but it is tough and often more scratch-resistant than other wood floorings.

Remember that solid hardwood is susceptible to damage, including dents, scratching, licking and accidents. But if you want to install wood floors, the best hardwood floors for dogs are typically made out of maple, Brazilian walnut or bamboo.

The lifespan of epoxy flooring depends heavily on where it’s located, how much traffic it sees, the company or contractor you hire and how well you stay on top of maintenance. Some experts say epoxy floors can last for seven, 10, 20 or even 30 years. Still, you will likely need to re-coat your concrete floors every couple of years.
