Jeremy is very knowledgable, professional education coach who has mastered his field of child tutoring. Aside from being a fine math tutor, he is also helping our child with organization skills. Even though he is new to us, I can say that he is dedicated and dependable. There are no screaming matches in the house regarding her math work and she has started enjoying math which is a big plus. I would highly recommend Jeremy without any reservations. Regarding his fees; you may find a range of tuition fees on thumbtack but essentially you get what you pay for. Having a professional business myself I can tell you that he is certainly worth your child's education and self esteem Dr. K

James has been working with my eight year old son Joey for the past two years. In first grade Joey was below grade level in reading. School homework was frustrating because Joey could not read the directions and nightly reading became a battle at home. James began working with Joey one day a week at our local library. James was always punctual and came prepared with an agenda and numerous activities that kept my sons attention. Joey bonded instantly with James, and as a 7-8 year old boy Joey never once complained about having to go meet with James. The reason being is because Joey himself knows that James has helped him in so many ways. Joey is now reading at grade level and actually enjoys reading! The one thing that I am most impressed with is that within 24 hours of James meeting with my son he will e-mail me an extremely detailed, lengthy summary of everything they worked on during the session, the plan for the next meeting, and homework assignments. The time James puts into my son is very much appreciated and I am truly grateful that we found such a wonderful tutor for Joey!

My name is David Drapala and I just recently retired from Fortune 500 Company in Pittsburgh PA as Manager, Credit Services. I have known and worked with Jeanne for over 12 years. Jeanne worked in the Information Technology Department as an analyst and later as a Project Manager. Jeanne and her team were responsible for the implementation of Accounts Receivable Systems for the Credit, Collections and Cash application departments. This included Accounts Receivable, Collections and a self-service payment module used by external customers. In both roles, Jeanne utilized excellent oral and written communication skills with both internal and external customers. Jeanne prepared project management documentation, presentations and training materials for employees and customers. She conducted in-house and off-site training classes, facilitated meetings and made numerous presentations to management. Jeanne made a presentation to over 100 people at the Oracle application user group (OAUG) conference citing the commercial advantages of the software to internal and external customers. It was quite obvious that Jeanne was motivated, dedicated and enjoyed the development and training aspect of her job. Jeanne's written and oral communication skills would be of value to anyone that utilizes her teaching, writing or technology skills.

Are you lost in math class? Do you want to succeed? If you are struggling, lacking confidence, failing, or hating math, well I can help you out. Did you know that learning is not about figuring things out. Learning is about connecting what you know (the stuff inside your head) to what you don't know (the math). When you are able to connect the two, you have just learned. A good teacher can diagnose what you know and explain things to you in a way that you will understand it. If you are looking for that, then give me a try. You won't regret it! Get help from an experienced teacher, like me, who understands learning and help you save the time and frustration of figuring things out in your own.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

  • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
