Mario cleared my leaves, cleaned the gutters, took down a tree and cut it and another large tree that had fallen into pieces so that we can chop it later. Mario was extremely professional, prompt, pleasant to deal with, and did a great job. His price was very reasonable. I recommend him and will definitely use him again.

Carlos did a GREAT job taking down an old tree on our property. After carefully cutting down the tree Carlos mulched up the limbs so we could use them on the property and even organized the wood left (destined for the fireplace) – Great Job and Great Value

When all local tree removal companies didn’t even pick up the phone due to a bad storm he came all the way from Fall River to Quincy in the middle of the night to cut down our tree, so it didn’t fall on our neighbors roof. Job well done!!!

Moises and his guys removed a dead birch tree, a dead spruce and trimmed a large spruce. The team obviously work together all the time; they were very organized and thorough. They offered to replant a few dislodged plants that were close to the birch tree. My neighbor actually asked Moises for some work that he was able to complete the same day. They spoke English and were friendly while being professional. They cleaned up "everything" before leaving. I would definitely recommend them.

Jason came out in a few days to provide an estimate and when I was ready I called and he came within a week. I had several stumps to grind from a grouping of bushes and trees taken down and also another bush to remove and grind the stump. All was done in about an hour and they left both areas clean. Job done was excellent. I would strongly recommend Jason and will definately use him in the future if I need him.

David did a great job with our vine infestation on our pine trees. He arrived promptly, had the tools, got to work immediately and got the job done in a professional manner in quick time. He cleared branches up to 3 feet from the ground, cleared the ground around the trunk, and cut and pulled the vines and disposed them into the woods behind. I recommend David wholeheartedly and without reservations whatsoever. Great guy!

Malpica LLC came right away and gave me an estimation for cutting, trimming branches, taking away the whole tree and cleaning the area. He was very patient and gave me the breakdown of what his company will do for me. We set a date and he came when expected. I am very satsified with their job, and they will be my go-to company for any landscaping and construction work. They are reasonable with pricing and customer service was amazing.

Vitor is a true professional Jack-of-all-trades! We hired him to powerwash our deck, clean our gutters, and cut a dead tree down. He did an amazingly thorough job with all three services. He left the deck and the gutters sparkling clean and cut the tree all the way down to the ground. We highly recommend his services!

Matt and his team were hired to clean the gutters at my mother's home. As a retired widow and wonderful woman of a certain age, my mother was anxious about hiring a contractor on her own because my father had managed home repair/improvement. Since he died, many home maintenance jobs have not been done - especially the gutters. Matt came to her home and was very kind and thorough when providing an estimate. I appreciated that he took the time to look at the gutters because it gave my mother the comfort that he could be trusted because he "didn't pull a figure out of the air" (mom's quote). On the day of the job, Matt arrived with his team of three and introduced them to my mother. The men were timely, very friendly and thorough. The gutters were bad - 4" of cement-like build up with little saplings growing out of it! The guys got rid of it in an hour. The experience was excellent. I recommend Matt and, if my mom used a computer, she would post a recommendation too!

Steve saved the day. We had a surprise right before a new fence was Being installed we were told a very large tree needed to be removed. With a baby on the way a move in progress and no place for the dogs. Steve accomplished the feat of removing the large tree and trimming some large bushes so that we could keep or schedule on track. Thank you Steve

I had five very tall trees that needed to be cut down that were stuck very closely in between my house and a small pool house. They came in with equipment I didn’t think would fit in my back yard but surprisingly did. They did an amazing job of taking all five trees down without any damage to any existing property including a fence right below the trees. They left with the yard, my deck and my pool deck all cleaned up and put back together the way it was before they started. They were courteous and knowledgeable and I wouldn’t hesitate to use them again in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
