I worked with Bharti for the design of my personal executive office space.  We agreed on a flat fee rate, which I found to be desirable so that I could include the fee in the budget and not be surprised at the end.  Bharti visited the space, received input on my ideas and tastes, and then created a visual plan with suggested colors, furniture placement, window treatments, etc.  Her initial plan was right on and she made recommendations that were consistent with what I liked, but also offered things that I had not thought of, which is what you hope for in using a designer.  Bharti also arranged for contractors to complete painting, etc. and was helpful in moving the project along.  She is delightful to work with, thorough, professional, and goes above and beyond in seeing the project to completion. When my wife saw the office, she couldn’t believe the transformation; it is very warm and inviting. We were so pleased with Bharti, we have asked her to design some rooms at our home as well. I enthusiastically recommend Bharti for your interior design needs!

Clarice Cutler Interior did a fantastic job with the interior of the new office space for the New England branch of a national engineering company. From the initial engagement and scoping meeting, setting the schedule for our project, to the final design and construction, Clarice and her team were responsive and professional throughout. The design itself was just what we were looking for and all our staff were happy with the color scheme, furniture and artwork selections.

Diana, worked with me in remodeling my bedroom with only a $1000 budget for a radio show! Miraculously, she made it all happen. Her advice, comments and direction for the project were simply invaluable. She is not only a gifted and a superb interior decorator, but a fabulous human being. Diana spend time asking about my needs and likes, and listened and addressed them all. She re-purposed old items and to my amazement made it all blend beautifully in the room the old with the new!! I recommend Diana highly to decorate your home and for any challenging decorating assignment! She is on top of her game- A TEN! Nicky

I hired Stacy for two projects -- one was to design an office space and the second was to decorate our family room for the holidays. On both occasions, she was a pleasure to work. I don't know how she does it but she has a knack for your design aesthetic just mere minutes after meeting you. Both projects turned out better than I had dreamed of and I've received many compliments. I look forward to working with her again.

Our experience with Caryn Paradis was excellent from start to finish. We had an unfinished basement that we wanted to finish and didn't know where to begin. Caryn talked with us in detail about how we wanted to use our basement and then came up with plans that included all of our needs as well as ideas that we hadn't even considered but should have. She was able to design a space that incorporated areas for everyone in our family, including our young son--even a stage that could be pulled apart for use as couches when he becomes a teenager! Because we live in separate states, Caryn was able to do much of the work remotely with minimal visits to our home to take measurements, etc. She had finish samples sent directly to us quickly and walked us through the decision making process. She designed specific requests, such as a fireplace for my husband and a guest room/office area. Caryn paid attention not only to the aesthetics of the job, but also the practicalities, such as outlet placement and HVAC. She also included amenities such as a well-placed dorm fridge which will come in handy when our son is old enough to use the space as a hang-out with friends. All in all, the job was smooth, well-designed and surprisingly painless. Caryn listened to our needs and then exceeded them. We would recommend her without reservation.

I hired Lisa Pak Design to help me select a style and design for a 2 BR, 2 BA condo I purchased in Littleton, Colorado in early 2015. I had never worked with a designer before, but had general ideas in what I liked and was looking for (“modern bachelor”). Lisa listened to me and quickly came up with a variety of ideas to customize my house. She did a fantastic job in coming up with a short list of selections for me to choose from, including living room and bedroom furniture, lighting and ceiling fans, paint colors, window treatments, artwork, rugs, and backsplash tile. She kept the project moving along quickly, ordering what we selected and coordinating with the stores and tradespeople. She respected my budget and provided me with options I could afford. Her recordkeeping and invoicing was spot on and I was always kept informed about financial issues. I was highly pleased with her ideas and professionalism, and am happy to recommend her to anyone needing home design and decorating support.

This is not a typical review, but our association is unique and I trust that yours would be the same if you were to select Irene Design as your consultant. We met Irene at a home show. We had been thinking about remodeling the interior of our home, but wanted a design consultant to work with us. We contracted with Irene Design to be our consultant. During the first visit to our home to take pictures and discuss with us, what we liked and disliked, I pointed out to her that the carrying partition on the first flow did not run parallel to the outside wall. Thus, any pattern in the flooring would also appear to diverge from the wall. Irene, immediately suggested that the tiles be installed at a 45 degree angle, which totally eliminated the problem. We then continued to work with Irene on the layout of the bathrooms, the wallpaper selection and the carpeting to mention only a small portions of the interactions we had with her in arriving at a design that met our needs and tastes. We had differences with Irene, but in each case Irene was always open to our suggestions. We would sit and discuss the pros and cons of each change and were always able to arrive at a decision that best met our needs. Once, we had finalized the design, we prepared a bid specification setting out exactly what we expected the contractor to do and what we would supply. This bid specification was given to 4 separate contractors including Irene Design. It should be noted that Irene had assured us that she would work with whichever contractor we selected to assure us that the design, such as the tile layouts in the bathrooms would be done as she had planned. While all four contractor bids were fairly close, Irene Designs bid was slightly less, so we selected them to perform the construction. At the same time we had also contracted with an electrician and a painter/wallpaper hanger. The electrician did an excellent job, however the painter made some serious errors in prepping the stair case walls for papering. After several attempts by the paper hanger to repair the problems, it became evident that all the paper in the stair case would have to be remove, the wall repaired and primed correctly and then repaper the whole area. Irene Design, on learning of this said that they would do the repair work at cost to help us out of this difficult situation. For these reasons, we highly recommend Irene Design if you are considering a remodeling project. If you would like to discuss our experience with Irene Design, we would welcome your calls

Sharon Lynn has worked with me in my home for many years. She has tackled new construction projects, general interior design, painting choices, party decorating and traffic flow planning, furniture upholstery and repair, window treatments, lighting and bathroom fixture selection and even more specific details such as cabinet knob selection and crown molding. She can do anything and she does it with aplomb! I'm convinced her special gift is getting to know her customer. She never insists on her decisions but rather arrives at conclusions through the customer's own decision making which she carefully guides by presenting well-considered options of selection in light of personality and budget constraints. Sharon wastes absolutely no time. She is always promptly on the job and prepared with all information and materials necessary. She often serves as the customer's advocate in terms of negotiating the best price for the best quality work finished in a timely fashion. She has transformed a large empty pool room over our three-car garage into a man haven complete with bar and built-in desk and storage, redesigned and decorated our now plush master bedroom, tweaked the guest rooms which now all feel like miniature bed and breakfast rooms with ceiling fixtures, new crown molding and bed trays awaiting our guests. She has updated tired living areas with the seemingly simple decision of new paint colors, pillows, and sometimes new furniture. Our most recently updated powder room was a makeover marvel with new floors, wallpaper, tongue and groove panelling on the walls and a custom built cabinet over the toilet which is a marvel unto itself. She has gone so far as once climbed into our attic and discovered an old headboard which she painted and mounted to our delight and astonishment. Old tables slotted for giveaway have been transformed with Sharon's magic touch and requisitioned back into service. Sharon has become a great friend whose bright optimism and energy is infectious. Don't be surprised if you find yourself jumping up and down at the completion of a job well done! She makes spending money and time a complete joy and wise investment.

I'm so happy I decided to have Interiors by Yanni furnish and decorate my home. Yanni was a pleasure to work with, she is extremely knowledgeable and has a great eye for color, textures, and design . My husband and I have very different taste when it comes to decorating. Yanni was able to work with us to find things that we would both like ensuring we felt comfortable and confident in the decisions we were making. My husband and I are so pleased with the outcome. Our home which was once was very bare, now is filled with color, accessories, and beautiful furniture thanks to Yanni. I would definitely reccomend Interiors by Yanni to Family, Friends, and anyone wanting to bring a new look to their home.

Jonathan is brilliant, in his knowledge of how to design something you have in your head onto paper, precisely. He has the tools, the background education, the psychology to deal with people who just don't know if their ideas about what they want can be done and he interacts with people like no one I have ever met before. I was so lucky to have found him, I recommend him to anyone who is thinking about doing a home project and just does not know where to begin. Jonathan is your person to help you with this!! He is so happy doing this job and that means us, as homeowners benefit from his joy of his job! I recommend to anyone thinking of updating/adding on their home to use Jonathan!

Allison Carpino my decorator from Two of a Kind Design- I can only say the best about her. She has been outstanding to work with. She is the one who saved my home rebuild project after my house was completely gutted inside after a house fire. She was the one who picked up on all the things that my contractor did wrong and tried to get away with ie not centering my family room windows. Allison has been so wonderful to work with. She is smart , experienced , has a good eye and has excellent taste. She is flexible, always returns all e-mails and phone calls, runs on time, and is willing to help her clients in any way that she can. Allison Carpino is honest and trustworthy . Her rates are very reasonable. She is kind, understanding and a good psychologist too. She can read people very well. She has been worth every penny. I do not know what I would have done with out her. I highly recommend her . She really has been outstanding. Julia Filshtein

I was first referred to Betsy DeMarco a number of years ago by a friend. I'm one of those types that goes into a paint store, a fabric store, or an interior design place and walks out feeling like road kill after trying to absorb all the choices and possibilities. Betsy is the type that goes in and dances out - totally energized and ready to take on the world. When I moved into my new home of bright yellow walls and polyurethaned wood, I was at a loss about how to calm all that brightness down without turning my home into a dungeon. Betsy came in and painted the walls a soft cream which toned down the poly and brought out the pink specks in the granite countertops that I never noticed before. The southwest green bathroom became a soft blue. The stark-white bedroom walls became delicious-apple red to offset the bright white wall-to-wall carpet. Betsy didn't stop there. She rearranged furniture, helped me hang a big screen TV, and reframed and hung some old water color art I had. The icing on the cake is she painted what she called "adjective" canvasses that now hang on the wall. If I had let her, she probably would have laid a new patio for me too, just to tie everything in. Betsy's work is impeccable. She's smart, works within your budget, is totally creative and can guide you through a process that would make someone like me not walk but run the other way. I recommend Betsy whenever I get the opportunity. You'll be equally happy with the results

I am a fairly picky person. I interviewed 7 different companies/people to do the job I wanted done. I was very pleased with Jenn and her eye for detail. I liked her non traditional approach to interior design. I didn't feel as though I was getting cookie cutter ideas thrown at me as compared to others I spoke to. She took the time to understand my wants and needs and how I lived in order to make the apartment work for me. I hate how some designers want to make something so pretty it's useless to live in it because your afraid it won't look like it just came out of AD. Mind you 1500 sq ft isn't a very big place, but I can now call the upper East side home.. ~SG

Trish did a complete gut renovation of our duplex - kitchen, 2 1/2 baths, new fireplace, living room, bedrooms, office and foyer. As a non-designer person it is difficult to envision possiblities but Trish helped us along and we surrendered some ideas we "thought" we wanted- Thank God she keep helping us evolve! The project exceeded our expectations, resulting in Awards and a magazine cover spread! And most of all We loved it - beautiful, elegant, social and comfortable. The details were stunning- Swarovski Chrystal pendants, surprising stairway floor lighting, custom marble fireplace, glass beaded wallpaper, beautiful fabrics to a yin and yang philosophy inspired kitchen/living room. She's gifted- you can't go wrong if you want beautiful home.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

    • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
    • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
    • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
    • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

    • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
    • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
    • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
    • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
