Harry's communication was excellent, responded within two hours to each contact. We hired Harry to fix a leak in our double-bowl kitchen sink. He quickly isolated the problem, and repaired it. He was knowledgeable, efficient, neat and polite. Very "husband-for-hire", I felt comfortable having him in our home. My husband asked him to fix a problem with one of our garage door openers. Once again, he isolated the problem, solved it and fixed it. His price was lower than he quoted (first visit and quote were no charge) and very, very reasonable. Overall, outstanding experience with Harry, we will be calling again and again.Thank you, Harry!

If anybody needs a good painter I would highly recommend these guys! Jorge and his crew busted their butts for two days finishing up tonight at 8:00 pm! Did everything as per the estimate and then things that weren't on the estimate! Never once asked about paying up front or half now half at completion... Finished up by picking up the yard, sweeping the garage, coiling up the hose. Never asked about being paid, just wanted to know if I was happy. I had to start the conversation about giving him money! The whole crew very polite and respectful. Oh, one other thing, I did something I have never done in 37 years of dealing with contractors. I tipped these guys $100 for beers on me!

I had a very good experience moving. Chris’s company was very accommodating and helpful. I was stressed by the move and he was able to calm all my fears and got the job done quickly and smoothly. They moved an entire house of furniture to my new apartment with no problems and a garage full of boxes and stuff to a storage unit at a different location. They did all of this in a few hours, they were quick and professional. The cost was very affordable for all of the work they performed. I highly recommend this company for all your moving needs.

Now im out money and have to pay some else more to fix his mess

We recently had Todd build an extension from our garage over our patio. Todd researched the materials needed to accomplish what was needed to get this project done. Once he started, along with Bruce, it took them only 6 days to complete. They were here from early morning steadily working until late afternoon each day. Todd was very particular about his work and made sure that it was done with the utmost professionalism. I would highly recommend him for any type of home projects. Job well done!

Top notch quality job by Alby at my house. Had a problem with water seeping into my garage through a side door. Alby came and looked at the job and within a week was at my house fixing the situation. Not only did he fix the water problem....he ordered me a new door and installed in flawlessly. Outstanding job done at a reasonable price. I have other work needed at my house and will be hiring Alby again with hesitation. Thanks Alby and Flory!!

My 1950's garage was in pretty bad shape. It had severe rot damage, termites and was home to a family of raccoons. It was racked to one side and leaning backwards. I was braced for the possibility that it would either collapse or have to be torn down. The setbacks on our property would have made the garage a nightmare to tear down and replace. Chris assured me that this would not have to happen despite it’s condition and half of the structure needing a new concrete floor poured. He braced the structure on all sides and very carefully brought it back to plumb before restoration work began. The project went very smoothly with only a few unanticipated issues which Chris quickly and inexpensively resolved. When it was all finished, Chris had transformed a dilapidated eye sore into the crown jewel of the block. My neighbors were all very impressed with my "new/old” garage. Chris's work ethic is excellent. He is punctual, professional, the site was cleaned up and put in order each night before he left for the day and above all the quality of his workmanship is outstanding. I've used him on several projects over the years and my motto for Chris is that he doesn't know the meaning of the phrase "it can't be done". I’m always so impressed by photos of his interior renovations and custom built cabinetry and furniture. If you need direction or ideas he is very creative with tasteful suggestions. Chris is a pro and I highly recommend CMK for projects big or small.”

The very best and very professional!! I hired Calo Renovations to repair some water damage and some insect damage in my 3 bay garage as i was preparing to sell the associated property. I secured a multitude of quotes for the job and chose Calo Renovations based on the knowledge level and attitude of the forman who came to look at the job. Additionally their price was very fair. The job was completed on time, for the agreed upon price, and I was given updates every so often, often enough to be helpful insight into the progress made, but not so often to be bothersome, and they cleaned up after themselves. Mike Calo was always honest with me and always accommodating. Even after the bill was paid he went over and above to help me provide proof of completion to my buyers' underwriter when they were not satisfied with an invoice. Calo Renovations was a pleasure to work with and I will definitely hire them again for all of my future repair and renovation needs.

I cannot say enough good things about Superior. The crew showed up in time, kept the work areas clean and did an amazing job. They worked long hard hours and managed to side my house and garage in 4days. The man that gave us the quote for the job was knowledgeable and respectful. He didn't make us feel like we were just another sale. We obtained 4 quotes and Superior was by far the best choice. I would recommend them to anyine.

We could not be happier with Dennis's work....our house looks amazing. It is a late 1800's construction that required a complete lead abatement and restoration. Dennis and his crew stripped it down to bare wood meticulously, replaced clapboards and trim, repaired the back porch and antique garage doors, and today it is a show piece, which the Historical Society wants to include in their next house tour! Dennis was instrumental in guiding us toward the perfect color scheme and design, which admittedly was not our original idea, but in retrospect turned out perfectly....we can't thank Dennis and Pro Quality enough for all they did. Dennis goes above and beyond to get every last detail just right, and his customer's satisfaction is clearly the highest priority. A true master at what he does....

We had 1st had Keith come do a small ceiling repair due to water damage. He gave us a fair price was on time I got the job done in six hours since then we’ve had him do either a small to medium size projects around our single-family and multifamily properties. After seeing his work ethic and quality of work we had him do a larger project in our entranceway off of the garage where he created us a mud room with a ceramic tile floor, Chair rail with bead board, custom shelving with bench and coat rack. He added a lot of extra fine touches to finish the room. Keith is a pleasure to do business with.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

How do you choose a commercial general contractor?

A commercial contractor provides similar services as a residential general contractor but specializes in working with large-scale projects for businesses, schools, nonprofits, governments and development firms. When researching commercial general contractors, review their portfolio of work and confirm they have ample experience working in the area you need. For example, if you are building a small strip mall, ask if the contractors have experience successfully incorporating all the needed elements such as a parking lot, meeting ADA requirements, accessing the proper permits, and completing work on time.

Once you’ve identified several qualified candidates, request bids for your project and then compare the scope of work with your needs and budget. Your commercial general contractor should oversee design, permitting, construction, materials purchase, and adherence to building code and zoning regulations, as well as sticking to an agreed-upon budget and schedule. It’s important to establish clear communication with your future commercial general contractor, as this will mean a smoother process for everyone. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.
