Harry did a great job with a carpentry project in our house. He is very professional, courteous and was happy to provide us with a detailed break down of the pricing for the job. Most importantly, he managed to complete the work for us within a very tight deadline. Highly recommended!

Very good communicator, keeping me updated on his arrival and telling me how/what he was going to do to take care of my small tasks. Did a variety of odd jobs around the house and made some good suggestions, which he implemented nicely. I'm pleased with the work he did. Apparently for Jim, there really isn't a job that's too small. Thanks, Jim!

I am very satisfied with the work Mario Villasenor did at our house. He was very reasonable in price, prompt, and extremely easy to work with. He completed the job sooner than expected and my yard looks great. Our backyard wedding will now be a success. We couldn't have done it without him! I highly recommend G and M for any yard services. We will definitely be using his services again in the future!

Choosing Shane was the best choice we could have made. Needed some plumbing done to repair a toilet, and when he came out he noticed a bunch of other smaller things that were also on my list and he was able to also knock out. Coming back for another electrical job as well, so we found our all in one Mr Fixit and we couldn't be happier. Very responsive, communication before and after the visit has all been great. Rates are more than fair for the area we live and all in all it was a great experience. I highly suggest this vendor if you need things done around the house.

This was my first experience working with Thumbtack and For U Builders. I have a small house, and in the past, many contractors have simply not returned my calls because the job was considered "too small to bother." For U Builders installed 2 new custom exterior doors on my home. From the very beginning, Brandon (scheduling) and John (owner) were very communicative -- we had to schedule around the door delivery, and they were able to fit in my project as soon as the last door arrived. Stephen (Carpenter) is amazing! He made it look so easy and was attentive to every detail -- my house was built in the 1930s, so adjustments were necessary to make everything fit. When the job was finished, there wasn't a trace of dust or debris anywhere! I am very, very happy with the results, and will definitely work with For U Builders in the future. The entire team are professional, friendly, efficient and a joy to work with! Thank you!

We found Bruce on Thumbtack and this was the first time we took a quote from someone on this app. Our first impressions were great! For those who have had work done before, getting a contractor to show up on time when they say they will be there is half the battle sometimes. Bruce showed up when he said he would be there with what he needed to quote the job (again I cannot tell you how many times contractors will show up with nothing). Very professional and left a good first impression. We eventually hired him for the job of designing and building built ins around our fireplace. He based his designs of some ideas I found online, but his architectural skills of aesthetically designing the project to fit into our space were excellent and exactly what we wanted from him! The end result (which turned into a phase 2 project to again design and build an aesthetic beam and pillars separating our open floor plan and flow into the built ins he just made) was literally perfect. Matched our taste, design of the house and the craftsmen ship was some of the best I have seen. I don't like to talk cost because everyone has their own opinion on what is considered expensive however what I can say is he had 3 change orders on the whole project (one of which was a good size relatively speaking to the built in project) and he was clearly very fair and right in line with my expectations. This speaks volumes on the type of person and businessman he is. A++ contractor and will 100% be using him again in the future!

Ben did a phenomenal job on replacing the front columns of my home. He is a great communicator in the time leading up to and even during the process. He was extremely punctual and made sure I was happy with the choice of materials. He had a small problem fitting the handrails back due to the size of new columns (not the same as the old - those were irreplaceable) but his solution was creative and fit the bill. They look like they have been like that since day one! He made sure everything was weather tight too by caulking any access that water might have. I am more than pleased with his work and am looking forward to hiring him again for other work I have around the house!

Hat City is so great. Joe came to fix the sub floor of my bathroom and explained to me what was wrong, how he was going to fix it in terms I understood. This was estimated to be a 4hr job but in this old house nothing is as it seems and it took 6hrs. He also fixed my door handle (Bless You!!) that has been broken for months and a tall gutter I was too afraid to get on a ladder to fix myself. He did all this for the same amount of money he quoted for the 4hr job. Nobody is perfect but Joe and Hat City are close.

Working with Bharti was very helpful in decorating my living/dining room. We had moved into a new house and our furniture was old and did not fit well into our new space. Bharti came and measured everything and formed ideas about what our preferences were. Then she drew up a few very detailed plans to help me visualize the different things we could do with our space. She helped me to pick paint colors, curtains and rods, sofas, rugs, chairs, etc. Now my room is beautiful and many friends have complimented our new look. Bharti was also pleasant to work with. She was timely in her responses and patient when I was indecisive. She is a professional designer and can guide you through your project with ease. I can recommend hiring Bharti for your designing needs.

I have used their Services for several years. He has replaced the windows for my home to painted many rooms and everything that needed remodeling of our house. He also helped me with painting on the outside of our house He did a wonderful job. in the remodeling of our main bathroom, which was not easy because we had to combine the old with the new. Currently he helped us with the portico that was super excellent for me. I find it very detailed, it works very hard and at the right time. The site is always kept clean. I was never disappointed and exceeded our expectations. He is very honest and trustworthy. I call it first with my ongoing projects and home improvement needs. everything I do at a good price fits with our economic needs for that reason I always call him because he gives me good budgets completely I recommend a simple man who will never let you down and his employees equal to the very responsible.

We hired Mike last fall for a major project of removing 26 large multi-sized contemporary windows, and to replace them with new construction windows. A massive and daunting task when considering the scope of the project. He and his proficient work crew did an exemplary job finalizing the project beyond our expectations. We appreciated his ongoing communication, professional skills, attention to detail, the cleanliness of the worksite, and respect for our home. He completed the project, within the budget, which was a fair and competitive price and in a timely manner. Mike takes pride in his work, and no corners are cut. We recently rehired Mike to replace 3 multi-paneled sliding glass doors with stationary side panels which was also done equally well. We would highly recommend Goodman Builders to anyone seeking professional work, a knowledgeable, skilled, and respectful work crew, and value for your dollar.

I had a deck built by Van Fleet Builders. Jeff did an OUTSTANDING job and he did it all by himself. It only took about a total of a week to complete the job. I would definitely recommend him and I will definitely use him again for other projects in the future.

We had an incident where one of our basement windows had broken. Victor came to the house the next day to measure the three windows for replacement (we decided now was the time to replace them all). That evening we had an estimate emailed to us, and the pricing was good. Victor ordered the windows, and the day they came in he called to schedule installation for the next day. He was on time, quick, and the work is very high quality. After installation he walked us through opening the windows, showing the completed work, and gave us recommendations regarding the rain/snow covers we had over the windows. We have plans for the basement which includes finishing it, update flooring, etc and plan to work with Victor for that as well.

Joe, first of all thank you! My family and I are very thankful we found you. I am sure we will talk again in the near future. Martelle Builders are nothing short of professional, responsible, but most of all AMAZING at what they do. I have built a few houses and I have had my share of terrible contractors but Martelle Builders by far exceeded all expectations. There are contractors that will just go into a job and just do it, and then there is Martelle Builders, who treats his job as these houses were of his own. It is more than just the money for these guys. Oh, and did I mention they framed my new construction mid-winter?? Do NOT hesitate to hire MB... I am very glad I didn't.

Ashok responded to my request on the same day. Despite that he already had a day fully scheduled, he showed in my house at 7pm and replaced the garbage disposal for us. The quality of his work is great and the fee is fair. I'd recommend him to anyone who needs a plumber.

Chris did a significant amount of renovation work for us in the fall of 2016, including dry wall, tile work, wood flooring and replacing window and door casings. His work proposal was very detailed and provided cost detail for each part of this project. He is very neat and always ends his day by cleaning the house, insuring that all the dust and debris is cleaned up. He also has a significant list of other business colleagues who he can call when he needs additional resources. Chris is a good communicator and always kept us informed on his progress.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.
