Do not hesitate to hire G&M! Mario and crew are friendly, courteous, prompt and hard working. Price was very fair for tree and shrub trimming. They cleaned up thoroughly, too. My yard looks so much better and the tree limbs are now off my roof..

Cristian did an amazing job removing a dead tree, pruning another large tree and grinding away a stump. He was punctual to the time we agreed upon, had the best prices and most importantly, my yard looked like he was never there. I will definitely use him again and recommend him for any services you need.

My wife and I hired Martin at Cutting Edge Landscaping to remove a dying tree in our yard. He was very professional, extremely fair with his quote and was very happy to do the job, you can barely tell anyone was in the yard removing such a large tree. We opted to keep the wood and his crew piled it all up perfectly where I don't even have to move one piece of wood right now. I really want to thank him for putting us at ease removing this hazardous tree and going beyond the original plan and removing a smaller tree that was directly under the one we hired them to do. I will be in touch with Martin exclusively for any future landscaping at my house. If you have anything you need done in your yard do not hesitate to contact Martin and Cutting Edge!

If you are searching for a hard working, talented, meticulous, trustworthy individual, Carols is definitely all those qualities. I hired him to cut down a huge oak tree that was extremely close and over hung the roof of my home. This was a very tough job and Carlos was able to take down the tree piece by piece. I was so nervous that the tree would hit the house, but he was so meticulous and precise with every cut and he pulled it off without a problem. It was apparent that he has done this type of work for a long time and it sure showed. After the tree was cut down he cleaned up the area, and stacked the wood beautifully. I would hire him again in a heart beat and recommend him to anyone! Job well done 👍🏼🙂 Thank you Carols!! 🌳🌳

All around Hall's Landscaping did great work. They cleaned up an overgrown front garden, pulling shrubs our and prepping soil for new planting. They helped select excellent, minimal care plants. The new garden looks excellent. They even removed a rotting dogwood tree in the same day, efficiently and with no visible traces of tree left. We would highly recommend Hall's Landscaping. KMH

Job: Deadwood 7 large trees including top third of a very high old maple tree. We selected Lamb's Tree & Plant because Glen Lamb is an arborist, very experienced, professional, had good reviews, and his bid was very close to lowest bid of 3. Glen and his crew more than satisfied our expectations. At all times we felt that safety of crew and our property were his number 1 priority. Clean-up excellent. Good communication before, during, and after the job. Amazing to watch him climb to the top limbs of the high maple!

Nathan and crew did a great job taking down 10 trees in our backyard. They were able to take apart and reassemble our fence in order to get back there and the fence was no worse for the wear. Initially it was scoped as a 2-day job, but they were able to complete in 1. Very happy with the job they did and would recommend to anyone. In terms of price, Nathan worked with us to offer a competitive quote. That in conjunction with my gut feeling that he was a good guy, led us to choose CT Green.

Malpica LLC came right away and gave me an estimation for cutting, trimming branches, taking away the whole tree and cleaning the area. He was very patient and gave me the breakdown of what his company will do for me. We set a date and he came when expected. I am very satsified with their job, and they will be my go-to company for any landscaping and construction work. They are reasonable with pricing and customer service was amazing.

Matt and his team were hired to clean the gutters at my mother's home. As a retired widow and wonderful woman of a certain age, my mother was anxious about hiring a contractor on her own because my father had managed home repair/improvement. Since he died, many home maintenance jobs have not been done - especially the gutters. Matt came to her home and was very kind and thorough when providing an estimate. I appreciated that he took the time to look at the gutters because it gave my mother the comfort that he could be trusted because he "didn't pull a figure out of the air" (mom's quote). On the day of the job, Matt arrived with his team of three and introduced them to my mother. The men were timely, very friendly and thorough. The gutters were bad - 4" of cement-like build up with little saplings growing out of it! The guys got rid of it in an hour. The experience was excellent. I recommend Matt and, if my mom used a computer, she would post a recommendation too!

I used Truelove Outdoor Services for a tree and stump removal. Holden worked around my schedule to make an appointment to look at the tree in question and gave me an affordable price. Looking at my yard, you would never know there once stood an ugly dying oak tree, as he removed the stump and took all the unwanted wood and cleaned up any traces that he was even there! I would highly recommend his service to anyone looking for any tree service or excavation!

After a number of disappointing experiences, it was a pleasure to connect with S&J through Thumbtack. I was particularly pleased with the communication between us because I always knew where I stood. And this contractor made every effort to work around the awful weather. Would definitely recommend S&J Landscaping to everyone.

Denise Martin and AJM Earth – an incredibly effective small landscape team – have given me back the garden started 25 years ago and all but lost of late to benign neglect and some overly successful Sea Oats. The combination of horticultural and excavation experience was just what this project needed. My initial inquiry was answered right away and we met to survey the “garden” just a few days later. This fact alone is telling of how very professional, organized, and responsive AJM Earth is. Denise and her husband Joe, as well as third team member Carlos, were great about listening to what I wanted as well as suggesting innovative solutions for what else was needed – and then delivering on schedule and on budget. In late September, the heavy equipment rolled in and all the overgrown beds were “grubbed out”, large stone steps were assembled to my exacting specs, and an amazing Gabion basket wall (one of those innovative suggestions) now permanently shores up an old wood retaining wall. Finally, a back yard screening border was planted with some of my favorite trees and shrubs. All this was accomplished by the team of three who seem to do the work of ten. And do it happily! Whatever your landscaping goal, whether you have no fixed notion or, like me, know what you want but need a ton of help to achieve it, Denise and her team are the ones to call. You will be as impressed and delighted as I am. December 2017

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to trim a tree?

The national price range for tree trimming is $270-$450. Tree trimming is often done by a professional arborist who is trained to safely trim and prune trees for both the health of the tree and the safety of the residents and their property. Trying to do your own tree trimming is not advisable unless you have the proper know-how. Tree trimming companies may charge an hourly rate for their services. The hourly rate may be higher or lower for different trees to reflect the relative safety measures, skill, equipment or people power needed to handle the job. For this reason, most tree services provide free estimates.

One example of an hourly rate for professional tree trimming services is $150 per hour. Costs may be under $100 or could be higher than $300 per hour, depending on variables such as proximity to buildings, health of the tree, height and diameter of the tree, and type of tree trimming desired. Geography and regional cost of living and regional costs to do business will also play a role in your tree removal costs.

How much does it cost to remove a tree stump?

Once you have a tree cut down, you’ll probably want to remove the tree stump as well. You may want the stump removed for aesthetics, the tree stump could be diseased, you might want to prevent regrowth, or you may find the roots are causing problems and need to be removed. Tree removal costs don’t always include the cost to grind out or dig out a tree stump after the tree has been felled and the trunk removed. The national average cost for stump removal ranges from $150 to $200. There are two main methods for dealing with tree stumps. In grinding, pros use a chipping machine to grind away the above-level tree stump until it sits just below the soil surface. Tree stump removal entails lifting the entire root ball of a tree out of the soil. Removing the stump will leave a hole in the ground and also take more time, labor and money than stump grinding. Here are some examples of average tree stump removal costs:

  • Stump grinding: $2-$4 per inch.
  • Tree stump removal: average of $60-$350.

The final price will depend on the stump’s size, condition, location and condition of the soil around it.

How much does it cost to remove a fallen tree?

If you need to have a tree cut down, have you planned what will happen next? Arborists often charge an additional fee to quarter and remove the fallen tree from your property, so anticipate this as part of your tree removal costs. You can elect to have the wood cut for use in your fireplace, or you may prefer to have it hauled away completely.

Tree removal costs may vary based on the height and the width of the felled tree. Size affects the labor required for removal, which will be reflected in the cost. For example, a tree service company may charge an additional $100-$120 to haul away the pieces of a felled tree. The service may cost as little as $75 in some regions and more than $150 in others. Regional labor rates, the cost of living and the cost to do business in your area will be reflected in your tree removal cost.

How much does it cost to cut a tree down?

When you’re ready to have a tree on your property come down, it’s time to call an arborist. The national average price range for tree-trimming costs is $270-$450. Tree removal costs can vary based on the height, diameter, location and health of the tree, and on whether you want to remove the stump. Height plays a major role in tree removal costs. Small trees, no more than 30 feet tall, are usually thinner in diameter and easier and safer for an arborist to manage. Removal of a small tree can cost anywhere from under $150 to over $450. Removal of medium-height trees, from 30 feet to 60 feet tall, could cost anywhere between $150 and $850 or more. Tall trees, typically 60 feet to 80 feet tall, may start at $500 or cost more than $1,000 to cut down. As the height and diameter increase, so does the cost.

Location is critical, too. Removing a tree in an open space is quicker and presents fewer obstacles than removing a tree that is growing flush to your house. Arborists can assess your tree and provide you with quotes based on the variables involved. For example, removing a medium-size hackberry tree that was growing too close to a home — the roots were damaging the home’s foundation — cost $1,500. This price included rope-down, house protection, tree quartering and stacking, and stump removal.

How much does it cost to cut down a massive tree?

If you have to remove a big, beautiful tree from your property, you’ll definitely need an arborist. Cutting down a massive tree without the proper tools or training can lead to major property damage or injury. A huge tree may need to be removed if it is diseased or dying and poses a safety risk, has suffered a blow from a storm and isn’t safe, or is growing into your home, your home’s foundation, your septic system, or your power lines. Removal costs for such large trees will depend on the tree’s height, diameter, and relative safety and accessibility, as well as whether you also need the felled tree and stump removed. The bare minimum for removal of a tree over 75 or 80 feet would be $1,000. This may not include tree quartering and removal or stump grinding. Stump grinding ranges on average from $2 to $4 per inch of the stump’s diameter. There is no set price as each situation is unique, so it’s always best to have an arborist give you a quote and detail exactly which services are included in the price.
