I needed some help with algebra in 8th grade. My parents had heard of Jeremy from a friend, so we got in touch and he started tutoring me. Jeremy is an excellent tutor. He helped me with my Algebra and all of my other subjects. He has a vast array of knowledge in all subjects ranging from Algebra to History. On top of that, Jeremy taught me what was important to focus on. He helped me prepare for the SAT and showed me how important it was. I went on to do excellent on it. This is what separates him from other tutors. He informs you of things that will be important in the future even when it has nothing to do with what you are learning in class. All the while, Jeremy is friendly and down to earth. It felt like a friend or family member was tutoring me. I truly couldn't give him high enough praise.

Mr. Parez was my tutor in high school for about a year to help me prepare for the SAT exam. The tutoring sessions were very convenient because they were done over Skype. Having the tutoring sessions done over Skype cut out time/money that would have been put into travel. Mr. Parez was always accommodating when it came to scheduling my tutoring sessions around my busy schedule. Mr. Parez had me take a preliminary SAT exam to see the areas of the exam I excelled in and which areas I struggled with. He helped me improve significantly in the areas I struggled in through various personalized lessons and homework assignments. Mr. Parez helped me to raise my score significantly. I believe that achieving a higher score on the SAT exam made me a stronger College applicant and helped me to get into 7 out of 7 Colleges that I applied to, including my top choice, of which I am now in attendance. I highly recommend Mr. Parez for any of you tutoring needs.

Tristan tutored my son for his SAT's and did a fabulous job. My son was not confident when he first took them and he had not studied. I felt that for him to have a chance at a higher score he needed one on one tutoring. Even though Tristan resided in Connecticut and my son in Long Island, Tristan took the challenge and tutored my son via Skype. Xavier recently took the SAT's again in January and his score were raised over 100 points. Tristan only tutored my son for six weeks. I wonder how many more points my son would of raised his score if he had been tutored by Tristan longer. I attribute my son 's success to Tristan and his patience and diligence with my son. He was always on time and professional. He provided written reports after each session and kept me abreast of what he would target with Xavier to improve his scores. I am very happy that I chose Tristan to tutor my son. His prices were very reasonable and he was knowledgeable and kind towards my son. I recommend him and his organization to anyone he wants to help their child succeed. So far my son has been admitted to two private colleges and he has received grants. Thank you Tristan! Michael is a nice tutor, he helped me a lot. As an international student, literature is so hard for me. He is so patient to correct my pronunciation. And also, he always use some easy word to express a complex sentence meaning to me. I improved a lot because of his help.

    About

In May of 2012, I obtained my M.A. in Secondary English Education, prior to that I earned a B.A. in Political Science, both from Quinnipiac University. Furthermore, I currently possess Connecticut’s Initial Educator Certificate, endorsement code 015 (English, grades 7-12). My tenure as an educator thus far, in particular my full-time position at Danbury High, has allowed me direct interaction with diverse populations of students. This has helped to broaden my horizons, fostering skills both in and out of the classroom, and, furthermore, has helped me actualize my strengths as a teacher. I excel in formulating rapport with my students, consequently motivating them to strive for excellence within, and beyond, the classroom walls. As an individual with ADHD, I empathize with special needs students, and I have become particularly adept at designing curriculum, syllabi, and daily lessons that are meticulous in terms of differentiated instruction. Technology is a particularly useful modality in the modification of lessons for vast and varied needs of pupils. Being of a generation weaned on computers, I am technologically savvy. I frequently incorporate multimedia within my classroom; the result of which is creative lessons that excite and engage students. Inarguably, technology is one of my most powerful tools for conveying ELA content knowledge, but it is not the only one in my arsenal. My undergraduate studies in Political Science provided me with a strong civics background. This, when fused with my passion for the English language, allows me to cross the traditional “subject” borders. My myriad of content knowledge is an asset, for it aids me in the creation of unique interdisciplinary units. ID teaching, in today’s society, is pragmatic because it prepares students for life after school; there, you can’t leave one subject behind in order to work on another. Being a teacher is about getting students ready for the rest of their lives, and in “the real world”, everything is connected. Understanding this, I work tirelessly to ensure that each and every one of my students succeeds, and matures into the best person he or she can possibly be.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you study for the SAT?

Your SAT prep strategy can mean the difference between a great score and a mediocre score, as well as the difference between being accepted to or rejected by your school of choice. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is a college entrance exam that measures a student’s knowledge and understanding of what they have learned up to this point in school and what they need to succeed in college. In addition to arming students with the knowledge they need to excel in the math, reading and writing components of the test, SAT prep can help improve scores by teaching students crucial strategies for taking the test itself. Professional SAT prep tutors can work with students one-on-one or in group sessions. Typically, tutors recommend that students who are comfortable and caught up with their regular schooling begin SAT prep at least three months before the test. If you’re targeting an elite school, six months before the test is a good time to begin. Students who are behind in school are advised to start early to ensure they’re caught up and feeling confident in all the relevant subjects. Suggestions for long-term SAT prep include taking challenging high school courses, completing all homework assignments, preparing for class tests and quizzes, and participating in class by asking and answering questions. There are free SAT prep training tools online; for those who’d like a one-on-one tutor to take them to the next level, the national average rate is $70 per hour.

When should you start preparing for the SAT?

It’s never too early to start preparing for college entrance exams, but professional tutors recommend a baseline of at least three months before the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is the gold standard for college admissions, and SAT prep is important for doing well. Your child’s SAT scores will have a major effect on which colleges send acceptance letters. Professional tutors can work with your kids to coach them on how to take the SAT, as well as studying the actual academic content. Doing well on the SAT is as much about knowing the right test-taking strategies as about having a firm grasp of the subject matter.

To understand your student’s readiness for the SAT, they can take the pre-SAT (PSAT) starting in their sophomore year. SAT prep can be structured around the student’s PSAT scores, so tutors can address any challenges and weak subject areas. If your child has their sights set on an Ivy League or elite school, SAT prep with a tutor or study program should start at least six months before the test. Vocabulary is a key element of the student’s SAT preparation and success. The national average rate for SAT prep tutoring is $70 per hour.

What is in the SAT test?

As your child is preparing for the SAT, it’s helpful to know the specifics of the test. The Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) is made up of three main categories and one optional essay. Students have a total of three hours to take the test, with an additional 50 minutes for the optional essay. In total, there are 154 questions. During SAT prep, it’s helpful to take timed practice exams to understand how you’ll do during the actual test. Here is a brief overview of each of the four categories:

    • Reading: 65 minutes with 52 questions. The Reading test measures command of evidence, words in context, analysis in history and social studies, and analysis in science.
    • Writing and Language: 35 minutes with 44 questions. The Writing and Language test covers the same topics as Reading, as well as expression of ideas and standard English conventions.
    • Math: 80 minutes with 58 questions. The Math test looks at the student’s understanding of algebra, problem-solving and data analysis, and advanced math in the context of fluency, conceptual understanding, and applications.
    • Essay (optional): 50 minutes with 1 essay. The essay will demonstrate the student’s competency with writing, analysis and reading.
