I gave him the task of updating my 1980's home. I needed my master bathroom completely remodeled. He remodeled my master bedroom. Removed a skylight that was leaking and closed up the roof and repaired my ceiling. Removed the fireplace and gave me a linen closet. Ripped up the carpet and installed a new hardwood flood. Painted the bedroom. .My kitchen and dinning room needed to be completely gutted, the wall removed between the rooms and combined into one large room with an island. The cabinets needed to be stripped and refinished. He removed the soffit and added crown molding on the top of the cabinets. Took the refrigerator and pantry cabinet and installed them in the wall to enlarge the kitchen even more. He even changed the entrance from the hallway into the kitchen/dinning from squared off ceiling to an archway which gave the look of a new addition to the home. He knocked out the window in the dinning room and replaced it with a sliding glass door. Built a large back deck for entertaining. Built a gazebo right next the the deck so that I can just walk onto the deck and into the hot tub in the gazebo. Poured a concrete slab. Then installed a hot tub. It looks like a new home throughout. My family and friends would walk into my home and their mouth would just drop open in disbelief. It doesn't even look like the same home. His attention to detail reflects the years of experience this man has in carpentry. When you explain what changes you would like to do to a home. He can tell you what will work and what won't. He brought to my attention that the electrical wiring was not done correctly when my home was built. So I had him correct that as well. Hiring Jacques to update my home was the best decision I ever made. Spending the money for updating and repairing my home was well spent. My home is worth a lot more thanks to Jacques. I would highly recommend him for any size job. He is a one man operation, but gets the job done like a whole crew of men. He constantly keeps the job site clean so the dust is minimal. I would not hesitate to hire this man. He is professional, knows what he is doing and can be trusted with your home.

Classic Refinishers beautifully restored two very damaged old wood tables of ours. Brennen Zaborowski was great to work with. He clearly (and patiently) explained our options and gave solid advice about what stains and finishes would look good. He provided honest and reasonable price quotes which we competitive with. a local refinishing shop. Pick up and delivery from our midtown Manhattan apartment was free. He kept us informed on the progress of the work. He also has kept in touch to make sure that we were happy with the work and has stopped by to adjust a wheel on the table at no extra charge. I cannot recommend Classic Refinishers more highly.

My husband and I couldn't be happier with our new kitchen. Maria was exceptionally professional and did an amazing job. The thought of throwing out cabinets that were in fine shape but just not our style seemed so wasteful. We are so happy we found Maria and saved a ton of money but still achieved our dream look in the kitchen!! Do it. You won't regret it!!

I hired Ed Wallace to build and install a custom cabinet to fit a tricky space in my master bathroom. Ed first looked at the space and gave me some options as to what would work. Ed is a terrific communicator and a problem solver. He explained the options in detail, with careful consideration of the space, budget, and materials. He built and installed a beautiful cabinet in my master bathroom that maximized the available space and matched it to the already existing cabinets. Ed's work is precise, neat, and very clean. He takes all the necessary precautions to make sure all things go well. He is always thinking two steps ahead. While Ed was completing the custom cabinet, it came up that he also does tile work. I was looking for someone to take on two back splashes, one in my kitchen, and a second in the master bathroom. Each backsplash had some unique features and I wanted to use a glass tile in the kitchen and a marble tile in the bathroom. Ed was easily adaptable to each job, type of tile, and the unique space. Ed is a consummate professional, he is a terrific communicator, does great work, and comes through on everything he says.

In December of 2011, I purchased a dim, run-down townhouse suffering from a bad case of shag carpeting, “band-aid” carpentry and nearly 30 years of neglect. To call it a "fixer-upper" would be an understatement--rather I had to completely gut it and start over from scratch. I hired Tom Mucherino to take care of the remodeling and bring it back to life, and I couldn’t be happier with the work. Tom is very easy to work with--he shows up when he says he will, stays in good communication, and was always very helpful and informative when it came to making decisions. Among other things, he handled all the demolition, completely re-did my kitchen and bathroom, replaced all of the damaged drywall in the house, sanded and refinished the upstairs floors, and installed new floors on the other two levels. Tom is a perfectionist, taking the time to make sure everything was done right, and his committment to his work shows; everything he did met or exceeded my expectations. He even put in a custom spice rack, and built me a new set of stairs to my upstairs loft!      Today, my house is absolutely gorgeous--I get compliments from everyone who visits about how light, bright, and airy and modern it is. I would recommend him without reservation to anyone needing a good contractor.

It was so important to find a woodworker who could execute my project designs exactly as specified for our client. Ed got quotes out, returned phone calls, sent shop drawings and finished the work well within our time frame. We were so pleased to find a professional of his quality.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you refinish kitchen cabinets?

If you’re ready for a new look and feel in your kitchen but don’t want to replace the cabinet layout or your cabinet doors, refinishing your existing kitchen cabinets is a great option. To be a good candidate for cabinet refinishing, your cabinet boxes and doors need to be in good condition. Cabinet refinishing includes taking down your doors, sanding or stripping the surface, preparing the doors with primer as needed, refinishing them with as many coats of stain or paint are necessary, then re-hanging them in their original locations. If you’re not in love with your kitchen cabinet layout, talk to a designer or contractor about creating an alternative. Refinishing simply means adding new shine to the existing setup, so if you’re dying to have a pull-out pantry or maximize wall space by going flush to the ceiling, you may want a different approach. Functional and stylish ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets can be similar in cost to refacing your existing cabinets, so keep the budget-friendly RTA option in mind when making decisions.

    How do you resurface cabinets?

Resurfacing kitchen cabinets means that you retain your original cabinet boxes and existing cabinet layout and simply remove and replace the front layer of your cabinet doors. Cabinet resurfacing can also entail replacing damaged cabinet doors, keeping those that are in good shape, and installing a new surface on all of them. Cabinet resurfacing may also refer to a decision to completely change out cabinet doors because they are damaged or their style is out of date, but keeping the existing cabinet boxes and layout.

If you’re handy and have all the proper tools, cabinet resurfacing can be a DIY project, especially if you’re simply repainting. However, if you’re not comfortable removing and replacing your cabinet doors, doing precision measurements and cutting, or working with sanders and power tools, then this may be a project better left to the pros. You or your handyman or cabinet installation specialist will remove all cabinet door and drawer fronts and all hardware, then prepare the surfaces for a new layer. The pros should also update the veneer or laminate the frames to match. Once the new laminate, veneer or surface has been applied and new hardware installed, your cabinet doors and drawers are hung once more in their original locations. The national average cost for refacing cabinets is $5,000.

    Can you resurface laminate cabinets?

Resurfacing laminate cabinets is an affordable and relatively easy way to give an outdated kitchen a fresh new look. If your existing cabinets are in good shape and you like your current cabinet layout, putting a fresh face on your kitchen could mean simply painting over the current laminate or putting a new laminate surface on the doors and drawers. Cabinet resurfacing may be possible for the capable DIY homeowner, but if you don’t have the proper tools or the know-how, it’s wise to call a handyman or a cabinet installation specialist to ensure you have a professional-looking outcome. To make sure your kitchen is right for cabinet resurfacing (as opposed to completely replacing your cabinets), ask yourself:

    • Do I like the layout of my current cabinets?
    • Are the cabinet boxes structurally sound?
    • Are the floor and framing in good condition to keep cabinets supported over time?
    • Are the cabinets free of water or wood damage?

How much does it cost to refinish kitchen cabinets?

Cabinet refinishing revives dull or dinged-up doors and drawers. The cost of cabinet refinishing will vary based on factors such as the number of linear feet of cabinetry you have, the amount of nicks and scratches that need repair, the level of detail on your cabinets, and more. The pros typically will remove the cabinet doors and then sand or strip them down to create a beautifully smooth new surface. After prepping the surface with primer as needed, the pros may then repaint or stain the doors to give them a new lease on life. Cabinets with intricate detail or extensive surface damage will likely cost more to refinish, as they will take more time and effort. Keep in mind that you should only elect to do cabinet refinishing if the cabinet boxes are structurally sound and you plan to keep your current kitchen layout for a number of years. The investment will be wasted if the cabinet boxes are in disrepair and will need replacement soon, or if you’re planning a remodel in two years. The national average price range for cabinet refinishing is between $1,500 and $6,000.
