I contacted John Mikalunas of J&M to give a gift to my sister, a few hours of help doing routine gardening. It wasn't anything big, but he was absolutely professional, prompt, and generous of spirit. He was so nice to her, did such a beautiful job, and has such reasonable rates that she's planning on hiring him regularly. It was a pleasure to do business with him.

All around Hall's Landscaping did great work. They cleaned up an overgrown front garden, pulling shrubs our and prepping soil for new planting. They helped select excellent, minimal care plants. The new garden looks excellent. They even removed a rotting dogwood tree in the same day, efficiently and with no visible traces of tree left. We would highly recommend Hall's Landscaping. KMH

Mylan has an artist's eye for color and arrangement. She is a joy to work with. She selected the most beautiful flowers and perennials for the container pots in front of my art gallery setting the perfect stage for the enjoyment of art outside and inside. I loved all my container pots on the deck at home especially a fantastic choice of succulents for the interior of a conch shell from Australia. Mylan is very creative and her enthusiasm is contagious. She has great resources and is also very good at maintenance, fertilizing and pruning.

I highly recommend Autumn Farmer's Lawn and Garden Care for all your landscaping needs. Billy gave a detailed estimate for the landscaping I needed done. I found his quote was very reasonable. Billy and his employees are extremely hardworking, polite, and professional. The job was completed on time and I was extremely happy with the end result. Billy not only carefully listened to my ideas, but he also gave his own professional advice. This company went above and beyond my expectations! Autumn Farmer's Lawn and Garden Care is an excellent landscaping company and I will definitely use them again in the future.

About

I have been gardening since I was five, helping my mohter in her vegetable gardens. My parents eventually divorced and at age 12 I was planting and growing my own gardens. Every place I lived I improved the landscaping, it is just something I love to do. I became a Master Gardener to fine tune my knowledge and skills, and am an avid reader keeping up on the latest in Gardening. People started coming to see my vegetable gardens and wanted to walk through them, because I am a huge advocate of companion planting: planting vegetables, flowers and herbs in such a way as to attract beneficial insects and deter the bad ones... much prettier than simple rows of veggies. I plant with a focus on long term results and beauty for landscaping and perennial gardens; with the proper spacing in mind, which is important to keep your gardens healthier and less work in the long run, the opposite of most landscaping companies which cram as much into a space as possible with no thought to the future. Gardens need to be maintained in order to stay healthy and beautiful, and it can be done as Holistically, and Organically as possible with great results. If your goal is a sustainable garden, that is not a cookie cutter garden, and want to enjoy it for years to come, I would love to meet you and help to create a relaxing space you can enjoy for years to come.

About

My mission is to help you to be a better gardener by providing coaching; to make gardens more sustainable by using and promoting proven organic methods; and to increase bio-diversity by encouraging the use of native plants and the creation of plant communities that sustain wildlife. I specialize in perennial gardens. You can hire me to maintain and improve the garden you already have. I'm available for weekly visits (length of visits would depend on the size and condition of the property). As much as possible, I use hand tools: shovel, trowel, rake, broom, hand pruners, etc. Very occasionally I use battery-powered cordless tools. I don't mow and I don't blow in keeping with the concept of tender land care: using my hands to tend your garden without noise and pollution from combustion engines. Maintenance services provided are as follows: - Check for possible problems and make recommendations for necessary treatment - Note plants that need dividing, transplanting, or pruning and perform these activities with homeowner approval - Stake plants as necessary to maintain a tidy appearance, and train climbing plants - Deadhead annuals and perennials to encourage extended or continuous bloom - Recommend perennial and/or annual plants to fill gaps in the garden if any, with an emphasis on native plants, and with homeowner approval, and obtain plants and install - Weed and edge Coaching services are provided. As a coach, I will work alongside you in the garden, demonstrating techniques and answering your gardening questions. I can show you how to have a lush, beautiful garden without spending a lot of money on soil amendments, fertilizer and mulch. You may have much of what you need on your property already, in the form of last year's perennials, annuals, and fallen leaves. With our help, you will become a knowledgeable and more confident gardener. I am an alumna of the UConn Master Gardener program (2009). I am also an artist (oil painter) and have formerly practiced as a registered architect. I have been gardening in Connecticut for 25 years.

About

I've been a gardener since I was little. I've experience in "soft-scapes"; that is creating landscape interest and curb appeal using plants and organic materials. I've encountered much success with clients largely due to my ability to listen to their needs, wants and desires. I'm willing to invest time to shop with my clients if so desired to ensure satisfaction with color, textures and sizing. I have a way of displaying and presenting depth through my familiarity with perennials. I can even maintain your current potted plants. My success requires your input, so I'll be happy to inform you of your chosen plant needs for survival. I'm full of ideas if you're at a loss.

Aquaponics is an exciting new concept, which unites vegetable gardening with fish farming to form a symbiotic relationship. With the price of an organic produce on the rise, it makes sense to grow your own. Aquaponics uses a fraction of the water of conventional gardening too. Hello, my name is Keith, and I have been involved in aquaculture, pond building, design and maintenance for several years now. I have attended aquascape training seminars and have built many varied water features over the past decade. Now with the enlightenment of aquaponics, I look forward to marrying the two concepts of gardening with pond building into an ecological union to create a bountiful and aesthetically pleasing, highly productive garden right in your own unique backyard.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.
