When you want it done right the first time, Bruce and his team at Custom Woodwork are the best choice. I had 2 properties that needed minor to extensive work. Bruce accomplished it all and I have compliments from friends, neighbors and the local building inspector on his superb work. Bruce's work ethic is apparent from the first time you meet him. He has been in the business a long time and is able to anticipate your questions. He makes excellent suggestions for cost savings that do not compromise the integrity of his work. One project required a zoning hearing. Bruce drew up plans that had the town hall buzzing with the professionalism of his work. As a veteran, Bruce honed his skills in the service and brings that devotion to every part of his work. He joined me at the zoning meeting and eloquently answered all questions. It was a relief for me to have him there! I strongly recommend that Custom Woodwork be your choice for any small or large project that you want done right. The first time.

I chose Dakota Builders to make some major upgrades to my manufacturing facility prior to seeking ISO-9000 certification. This included remodeling seven offices and building a 2500 sf free standing enclosure for the Inspection Department. The shop area required several partition walls for air ducts, electrical outlets, etc. I explained to Kevin what I needed and he took care of everything including design, build, finish, and permits. Came out perfect. I would recommend Dakota Builders to anyone that asks.

Mike has been hired for numerous jobs over several years. He completely renovated two bathrooms and our kitchen before moving into a new home for our family, while our house was on the market our washer machine hose let go and damaged our first and second floor of our colonial, Mike came through and calmed us down and went step by step how everything would be fixed and really took the pressure and stress off of us. He turned the house over to us in less than 30 days. My insurance adjuster was shocked due to the extent of work that needed to be done and praised how great the house looked when it was completed during his final walk through. Mike does odd jobs for us along the way and this week just finished renovating our basement in our new house. Mike is very knowledgeable and professional. His work is always completed on time and budget but also the number of compliments regarding the quality and workmanship of our renovations definitely makes Goodman Building Company our first and last stop with all home projects and renovations.

This review is way over due. We started working with Jonathon after a bad experience with a contractor. We needed serious structure work to our home. I knew Johnathan was committed to our contract, as he came to meet us on a Saturday in December at our house. He was booked all week, but made a special effort and squeezed us in. Mind you this was just to look at our property and didn't not even sign a contract with him. Our project was a full renovation of our home. I can say with confidence that even if your needs are even just one room, Je & Sons will make you feel like your the company's priority. Communication was constant and Jonathan was reachable via phone, email or in person with appointment. Even to this day during construction he still periodically checks in with a call or email. This leads me to believe he is concerned with our project and becomes part of it with you. It starts with blueprints then all others are done after they get paid, but not This company, Jonathan wants to see the end project and your ideas/dreams become reality. Strongly recommended and would use them again for future projects.

Rolando from Roland Construction went over and above my expectations. He and his team were very professional and did everything that he gave an estimate for and even fixed other little problems in the basement. His team were all very hard working and organized. At the end of every work day, they would leave the site clean of all debris, neatly packed in bags, ready for the dumpster. I would definitely recommend Roland Construction for any project in a home.

We had the pleasure of working with Mark Troiano from CJT Development to build our custom new house. He is everything you would want in your contractor. He made great suggestions and helped keep us stay within our budget. When we met with him to go over out blueprints he came back with ways we could save money and not lose the integrity of our dream home. He did an amazing job sticking to the time table that we discussed previous to starting our build. Mark does an amazing job of explaining the process of everything and stayed in constant contact with us throughout the entire project. He was always available to answer our questions whether it be in person, on the phone, text or email. Mark was always willing to help out where ever it was needed. He is hard working and honest and works with quality subcontractors. Our house came out beautiful and the quality is amazing. I would highly recommend Mark to do any project, and would hire him again in the Here is a link to our home on Houzz http://www.houzz.com/projects/1482269

The guys David and his second (i didn't get his name) were great! I had the wrong doors and David offered to drive me and the doors to home depot and even picked out the best set up for both my pocket and home while his second stated at the house and got things started! He and my 5 year old got along well she even asked if "uncle was coming back". I've already started recommending Arrington to my friends who I know have jobs they may need help with. Excellent!

Tom has done many jobs at our home in Carmel, NY, installed a two layer deck , installed 4 sliding galss doors which opened out to the new deck, riped up old style slate floors in the kitchen and installed new ones, repaired the ceiling in our living room(house was built in 55 so its this ole house,LOL) and has always done a fime job. After all this work which was done since we moved in July of 2013 plus when we moved that day he also installed a wood fence around a large part of the back yard which he started the day we moved and finished within 2 days(210' of fence) so our 4 dogs would have a play/poop area. He works with you and comes up with some very good idea's on the jobs as well and his prices are fair, I would recomend Tom for any home remodeling /improvements. He will be doing our master bath floor soon as well.

Mike did an excellent job on the design of our home. He was very through, cooperative and patient with us as we worked through our decision process. He also had very good design ideas along the way. Our parents used him also and were very pleased with the outcome. We recommend him for any residential project large or small.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
