I contacted John Mikalunas of J&M to give a gift to my sister, a few hours of help doing routine gardening. It wasn't anything big, but he was absolutely professional, prompt, and generous of spirit. He was so nice to her, did such a beautiful job, and has such reasonable rates that she's planning on hiring him regularly. It was a pleasure to do business with him.

CLSR was hired to weed, prune and mulch my 1 acre property with a vast amount of trees, bushes and flower gardens. They did an outstanding and meticulous job, the before and after are night and day. They were on time, fast working, excellent attitude and fairly priced. Will definitely hire again. Very pleased.

Job: Replace diseased pachysandra in small garden Mylan of Plant Design Therapy, responded a few minutes after I posted the job on thumtack. Throughout the job,I appreciated that she was very responsive to texts and phone calls, and willing to work with us on the overall budget. Mylan suggested a "cottage garden" to replace the portion of pachysandra that was diseased. This is something we had never considered, and as the design took place we were very pleased. We wanted something that would be easily maintained and would thrive in the sunny and shady areas of the garden. We worked interactively with Mylan on the web to choose color schemes and other aspects we might not have considered. Her crew seemed very capable and did a great job with planting. The biggest job turned out to be removing roots of dead pachysandra, which had been growing in that area for over 30 years. This took many many more hours than expected, so an extra day was required, and we were glad they were able to schedule more time on the fly. They also edged and mulched all beds in our yard, which gives an overall “upgrade” in appearance we hadn’t expected. We’re very excited about watching our cottage garden grow. I would highly recommend Plant Design Therapy, especially for someone interested in Mylan’s design skills and extensive gardening knowledge.

We first hired Simple Stone in Summer 2017 just to do a walkway around our house. The work was so carefully, artistically & expertly done, and Edgael & Nicky were exceptionally kind, honest and hardworking, that I knew we would hire them for more jobs on our home renovation. They did a beautiful job designing & installing stone veneers on the front of our home, and have branched out into regular yard & garden service for us, including snow removal and landscape design. Simply put, they are THE BEST.

Landscape Design & Garden Installation: “After living in our house for nearly 3 years we decided it was time to make some upgrades to the landscaping. By chance, we attended the Stamford Home Show in March and collected information from numerous landscapers. We followed up with a few and interviewed them at our house. All had years of experience and some good ideas but no one took the time and care to listen to what we wanted and come up with the kind of detailed and beautiful design that Denise Martin of AJM Earth did. From the first moment, it was obvious that Denise and Joe Martin not only offered a full service package of landscape design, hard scape design, execution and maintenance, but that no client was too small or unimportant. The other vendors could barely be bothered with us unless we would shell out a lot of money before even getting to know what their design plans would be. Unlike the other vendors, the Martins were never too busy to answer phone calls, emails, and texts right away. They lavished us with time and attention every step of the way. It was clear from the outset who had presented us with the best designs and who would provide the kind of customer service we needed. Throughout the process we were amazed at the attention we got. We can’t imagine any other landscaper spending as much time with us, being as available as Denise was, or taking the care with our property as if it were her own to get everything just right. Whenever there were unforeseen challenges along the way, Denise persevered, day and night, to make sure that the design was executed as promised. She always made us feel that our project was her passion. Cars slow down now as they drive by to take in the lushness of the landscaping. People who walk by stop to tell us how beautiful the garden is. We couldn’t be more thrilled with the landscaping. It is truly breathtaking! We can’t imagine working with a more talented, dedicated, patient, and kind landscaper. Clearly, we made the right choice.” Stephen Stamford, CT

GML (Greg) was timely in his responses to my calls and questions. Work quality was excellent. Punctuality was perfect. All business this group. I had a difficult leaf and small downed limbs removal project along with hundreds of pine cones in the yard. Most of the leaves were on the sides of my property and in my garden and flower beds. They removed nearly 100% of the items listed above while causing no damage to any existing plants. It was a 4 hour project and they hustled the entire time. I would recommend them to anybody. So glad I called them. I'm getting too old to do this stuff.

I had an idea for an entry to my home. Colby could understand my idea and with his creative mind and craftsmanship he created what I had invisioned. He also finished a project I had started as a small addition an did an excellent job finishing the space to tie it in perfectly to the existing structure. Colby always showed up when he said and also kept in contact with me during the entire process. Colby is a true craftsmen, his attention to detail is suburb. He takes great pride in his work and goes above and beyond to make sure his clients are pleased with him and the quality of his work. I would highly recommend him for any project. He also created a custom cabinet for my son who is an architect. My son designed the cabinet for the space and gave Cloby drawing for it and it worked out exactly as planned and my son and daughter in law were very pleased with his construction of the cabinet and the installation of the cabinet. Once again I would highly recommend Colby, for his skill not only with tools but with working with the customer, and seeing a project completed to everyone's satisfaction.

Hello, I'm writing this reference for Mark Moen from DIS LLC. Mark has done several jobs on my property. He is in the process of leveling my yard, putting in stone retaining walls, all new sidewalks and a new driveway. In the leveling of the yard, he has removed large bushes and trees, and has relandscaped nearly the entire yard incorporating small plants, tons of bulbs, several fruit trees, and an area ready for a wonderful organic vegetable garden next spring. We have a small yard and big ideas; Mark has been great at incorporating our ideas and making them work in the area we have and within our budget. Currently the work he is doing is a necessity for our house, (he will began working on our basement for weatherization because it floods and then to make it a finished basement). But there are several ideas that have come up that if we can find a way to budget for them, we'd love to have Mark do them, such as a custom stone fire pit, a small designed pond with a waterfall, and a fenced dog area. A very large job that we would like to have Mark do hopefully in the near future is a total remodeling of our kitchen. It is something we have discussed and brainstormed about and when we are financially ready, it is a project we will take on. I have recommended Mark to family, friends, and even to my workplace, where he completely remodeled two bathrooms (one being handicapped), and several offices. Mark has always been very honest and trustworthy. While he has been working at my house, he even lets the dogs out to use the bathroom during the day. Thank you.

He started doing one small job at my house. Things went great, he worked hard and the job looked amazing. After that we have called him back several times for painting, landscaping, and handyman services. Always a fair price and great work.

    About

Great gardens start with Designing Eden LLC. For over 20 years, Designing Eden LLC has been creating beautiful outdoor environments in Kent and throughout Litchfield counties. Yours could be next! Designing Eden is confident that our accomplishments, unique blend of talent and work ethic enable us to provide the highest quality of professional services to our clients. We are a firm with a long and successful history of projects. The firm’s involvement with commercial and residential properties has given us a broad scope of site design and construction experience. Our clients include interior designers, landscape architects, architects, corporations, as well as property owners. Although we work on all types of properties, our specialty and love is renovating gardens of period homes, as well as creating old style gardens for new homes meant to look old. Landscape design Designing Eden is known for our award winning landscape designs and plant combinations. Our landscape designs are well thought out, environmentally sensitive and highly personalized. Our landscape designs will compliment the architectural style of your home while also meeting your family’s needs. A design which will provide year-round interest by creating plant combinations with contrasting forms, leaf textures, colors and varying bloom times. Richard, the owner, holds degrees in horticulture and landscape architecture, is a nationally certified landscape designer and a Connecticut certified nurseryman. Landscape installations Not only are we landscape designers, but we install gardens as well. Designing Eden is a small landscape company capable of big things. We don’t dream of being the biggest, just the best, most creative company in the New Milford area. A company where the owner is on site every day to manage even the smallest details. Garden maintenance The success of a newly installed landscape will greatly depend on a commitment to an ongoing maintenance program. Without proper care it doesn’t take very long for a garden to start showing signs of neglect. Timely weeding, watering, deadheading, pruning, as well as scouting for insects, diseases and nutrient deficiencies will keep your garden looking its best. We offer our clients custom maintenance programs to suit their needs so they can spend their free time relaxing in their new garden, not working in it. Why choose Designing Eden LLC? Our clients choose us because we bridge the gap between landscape architecture firms and the typical landscape company. We have the background, experience and capabilities of a landscape architect, yet we aren’t afraid to get our hands dirty with the installation of your garden. The benefits to you are a seamless installation which will also save you money. When the designer and installation crew are within the same company, there are no ‘hold ups’. Decisions are made on site without having to wait for a designer to return your call. This efficient process will save you both time and money. The best part is because Designing Eden is installing the gardens, we don’t need too charge nearly as much of what a design only firm charges for the design portion of the project. In fact, we will only charge a fraction of what a landscape architecture firm would charge. Every house deserves a beautiful garden. Whether your project is a new foundation planting, a pool garden, screening your neighbors property or an entire landscape, we are here to turn your dreams into reality. Enjoy a more colorful life!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

    • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
    • Read online reviews of client experiences.
    • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
    • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
    • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
