The cooking class we asked Mitchell Goran to conduct was a birthday gift to our 10-year old granddaughter, Katherine. "Mitch"is clearly an experienced and competent chef. He knows what he is doing and does it well, answering any questions asked along the way. Ahead of time he asked the right questions about the planned cooking class, checked to verify the supplies that we already had and carefully purchased the others he needed. As the class progressed it became evident that Mitch is not only a fine chef; he is a very good teacher. He was patient and careful teaching Katherine basic skills: how to handle a knife and how to separate the white from the yolk of an egg. He used words to describe the cooking process that she could easily understand. He helped Katherine write down each step in the preparation so that she had a record in her own words. He gave Katherine ample time to practice her newly found skills, even to the point of extending his time with her beyond the contracted time. The smiles, the occasional laughter, and the good meal at the end were clear testimony of a class well conceived and well executed.

What can I say?! Scott was magnificent. He was helpful in planning the perfect seasonal menu, the food was exquisite, and he left my kitchen spotless. He has a sparkling personality, which actually added to the fun of the dinner party. Some of the ladies were interested in learning his recipes, and he let them jump in and help! Thank you for a wonderful evening, Scott!

I had a wonderful cooking class with Chef Michael Molleda. We chose a menu and he sent me the recipes in advance. He taught me how to prepare a variety of dishes. He made it easy, fun and the food was delicious. We plan on hiring him again!!

I have had the great pleasure of enjoying the delights of Mrs. Love's cakes and amazing cooking. She catered our company Thanksgiving Dinners for several years. Her cooking never fails to blow everyone away & I cannot say enough about her level of professionalism. Her cooking made those Thanksgiving dinners an event we all would look forward to all year long.

I've been an avid home cook for years but in just one class with Evan, I learned so many things that will make my cooking experience more fun and the meals I make more delicious. It's amazing how learning how to actually use a knife can speed things along! I took the class alongside my 14 year old son who has taken a reality show driven interest in cooking. Evan's class was great for both of us. My son learned a lot and is excited to continue his culinary journey. I so appreciate how he tailored the class to our needs. We are looking forward to more classes with Food's an Art!

My family was lucky to work with Denise this winter/spring. She came to our house several times for private instruction and was so warm and encouraging and knowledgable as she explained everything she was doing for us. It was amazing to see her involve my preteen/teen boys whenever they had time and in whatever they decided to take interest. She encouraged them to taste new foods, to discuss what they liked, to think about what was healthy and to enjoy working in the kitchen (or at the grill!) She gave me great tips and examples for meal planning, shopping, prepping, cooking, cleaning and organizing my kitchen, all with a great focus on healthy habits. She has put us on a path to better eating and more enjoyable family meal time together - what a gift. Thank you Denise!

I have used MuchaChula for several events in the last 12 months. They have catered food for birthday parties, a baby shower and just fun get togethers with family and friends. I have found them to be extremely professional and at the same time warm and genuine. The food has been delicious every time. We have had both formal sit down dinners as well as more informal gatherings, and the food preparation, service, and clean up has been perfect. I haven't had to lift a finger and could really enjoy being with my guests. I highly recommend MuchaChula!

Deborah was flexible about helping me to cook better, with more variety, and to learn to cook some meals that my husband loves. At first, Deborah helped me sort out my kitchen equipment and supplies at my home. The cooking techniques she taught me are ones that you just don't get by following a recipe. We will continue with weekly cooking visits to my home. She is clearly an experienced chef instructor, with a pleasant and fun personality. MAH, Fairfield County

I found Chef Robo (Rob) after searching online for in-home cooking lessons in the New York area. Rob got back to me quickly and we scheduled a class for the following weekend. On the day of the class, he met my husband and I at our house, where the three of us sat down and settled on a menu. Rob gave great guidance and plenty of options. We then went shopping together for ingredients at a local supermarket, where Rob gave advice on how to select for best quality. Once back home, Rob started with the basics we needed including knife skills and how best to prep one's work space. We both found Rob extremely easy to learn from and very patient with novices. He taught extremely useful tips and shortcuts throughout. By the end of four hours total, we had learned how to make an excellent holiday dinner including two appetizers, two mains, and two sides. We got so much out of the class, we took a second with Rob soon after! A week or so after the classes, when my husband and I were preparing the meal for our party, Rob answered several follow-up questions we texted to him. Then, Rob followed up with us to ask how the meal turned out. The food was a huge hit, everything from the apps through to the main meal really impressed our guests! Rob greatly raised our cooking abilities and confidence, and I highly recommend his classes.

Chef Jenn demonstrated a level of versatility and professionalism that can't be matched when she held a Thai cooking class for my bachelorette. With last minute notice and requests we were sure we would have had to compromise on she came through with exactly what we wanted. To top it off she did so quickly, and more flexibly than we could have ever asked for! She was knowledgeable, fun, and she fit right in with my crazy group of girlfriends making for an amazing night! I have used her tips and tricks frequently in my own kitchen and have used her recipes multiple times in my home and they are always a hit! Highly recommended!

I am certified by the Kushi Institute in Macrobiotic Cooking. I have been practicing a macrobiotic lifestyle for 30 years and lived and worked at the Kushi Institute for three years in the registration department. I raised two grown children with the macrobiotic diet and lifestyle, and they are happy and off living their lives now. I am dedicated, compassionate, patient and kind. I have also been a yoga instructor since 1997. I have taught macrobiotic and ayurvedic cooking classes at the Integral Yoga Institute in New York City, in the tristate area as well as San Francisco. I have helped many people change their lives and health for the better by just showing them the way. What we put into our bodies creates the sea of life or our bloodstream. If this pulsating stream is acidic, clogged and unclean, then viruses and germs can harbor and grow and create life-threatening illnesses. With a macrobiotic diet, you will clean your body in a safe and gentle way without medications if you so chose or with moderated medicine from your doctor. The food can become delicious to you as you start to appreciate it and most importantly, feel better! This is a splendid opportunity to learn from a teacher who lives it every day. I am very supportive and have a wealth of resources of the best macrobiotic teachers in the world. I would be happy to talk to you about any health concerns and give you my idea of a plan for you of healthy eating and healing. Please call or text anytime. Thank you!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do private cooking lessons cost?

You can take private cooking classes to have fun, to learn a new skill, to improve your health, to bond with your partner, to enjoy a playful first date or to have a unique birthday party experience. Nationally the average cost of private cooking lessons ranges between $100 and $150. Prices can vary, depending on where you live, the type of cooking class you’re taking, the ingredients the chef provides, and the reputation of the chef. Cooking classes with Anthony Bourdain will clearly cost more than classes with a local restaurant owner. The number of people in the class will also affect the cost, with group lessons often priced per person to account for the cost of ingredients. For example, for group lessons, a brunch workshop may cost an average of $70 per person, a steak dinner with sides could cost an average of $80-$85 per person, and a sushi lesson could cost an average of $100 per person. Ingredients play a major role in cost, as the chef will pre-purchase the food you will be working with. Weekday classes will usually cost less than weekend classes.
