I think she is great. Our first visit was canceled due to an unforseen situation of my husband was on life support fighting for his life, but it did not stop her from answering my questions regarding my dog's behavior. She is caring and cares about what she does. I would highly recommend her to anyone looking for a dog trainer.

Our new rescue pup Roxie needed basic obedience training and we discovered Suzanne Rodda while searching the internet for local dog trainers. Suzanne knows her stuff ! We have worked with her over the last month and a half and the difference in Roxie is obvious. Suzanne's approach is to not only train your dog, but to train YOU to work with your dog as well. It's a win win combination. We had a few challenges facing us along the way BUT Suzanne's flexibility and commitment to us made working with her easy and a pleasure. She has our recommendation as an excellent trainer.

Adrienne Mesko is an outstanding dog trainer, and those seven words are an understatement. I have only superb things to say. Adrienne has impeccable training credentials, a lifetime spent around animals, a perfect environment for training dogs inside and outside, and, most of all, a sound, consistent, thoughtful, intelligent and effective approach. And very reasonable rates for the astonishingly good training results. When I looked for a dog trainer on Thumbtack, it was as an almost a last ditch attempt. I'd tried everything with Kai, it seemed: not once, but twice at New Skete, the best in-home trainers for problem dogs that I could find in NYC, consults with excellent vets, Chinese herbs, nutrition changes, working at home every day, every leash/harness/muzzle/collar imaginable, but still he had seriously problematic behaviors: over-protectiveness and resulting aggression that led to lungeing and barking at other dogs and people and even several biting incidents. He's a strong adolescent male GSD, and his pulling on the leash led to dislocated knees and herniated discs. He's a love of a guy, however, and he'd had a difficult first six months (4 homes), and it was worth anything to give him a chance. So I went on my new Thumbtack app (it had worked well for me before) and Adrienne's credentials and skills sounded perfect for what we needed. You can see from the photo below how well he does with other dogs after his "board and train" with Adrienne. He's a dream on a leash. He's well behaved at home, hanging out peacefully on his raised bed "place," no more destructive behaviors to get attention. He listens, pays attention, and stops instantly when told "no," rather than making his own rules. His behaviors now match the smart, affectionate dog he always was on the inside. She's trained his humans to use the training approach she taught him, so all he's learned can come home with him. I will be thanking Adrienne Mesko for the rest of my days! And I'd be happy to talk about her work in person.

Incredibly professional and also one of the most knowledgeable dog trainers i have ever met. Her ability to understand our needs was only exceeded by the one thing genuineness by which she engaged us and our dogs. We have 5 dogs . One of the dogs ,Jake, is a rescue and has just been introduced to the family. Being a male, there were some issues with introducing him to the other male, Baxter. Niamh adressed the problem immediately and educated us on how to continue the process. She is also available any time we need her and if not at that moment- she will return the call / text as soon as possible. We look so forward to continuing our relationship with her and having her continue to educate and assist us with all of our training needs. It is amazing to have an incredible Dog Trainer but it is even more amazing to have an incredible educator as well.

Joyce is fantastic!! My husband and I had a three-month old wheaten terrier puppy when we hired Joyce. We were looking for help with potty training, basic obedience, leashing walking and helping our little guy become a part of our family. We cannot say enough positive things about what Joyce and her training methods have done for us. Our puppy was at ease immediately with Joyce and loves his training sessions. He has come leaps and bounds in his training using her easy to follow methods and improves after every session. After a few short months, he follows commands, is almost house broken and actually listens to us now! Joyce is professional, flexible with scheduling, kind, and very affectionate with our puppy. It's obvious how much she is a natural with animals. We also use Joyce for boarding when traveling. We are confident that our puppy is in safe, capable and loving hands when he spends time at Joyce's house with her (and Corcega!). She'll even send photos, videos and multiple daily calls and texts with updates for you, the individual service she provides for your pup is so much better than doggie daycare. If you are looking for a dog trainer, dog walker or a happy place for your dog when you're away on vacation, we highly recommend Joyce and her services to any dog owner.

We have tried many dog trainers with many different techniques over the 35 years of having dogs. None came anywhere close to the effectiveness of Rick's handling of our golden doodle. We were on the verge of giving our dog away when we first met Rick. After a reasonable number of sessions, he transformed him into a completely different and oh so delightful pet. And the neat thing about Rick's techniques, our dog showed improvement after the very first session and just continued to get better as we went through the winter. Rick truly worked magic.

I reached out to Josh for help because my dog would lash out at other dogs when we went for walks, hikes, etc. I was very pleased with his work! He arrived on time, earlier than expected, to really make sure I got the most out of my session. The quality of his work is very professional and you could tell he truly cares about helping you and your dog! He is very knowledgeable in numerous different behavioral issues, which was impressive. He taught me how to take control of my dog and now my dog is doing much better socially. Josh also responded to my emails in a timely mannner when I would have quick questions. I would highly recommend this service!!

When I found Christine on Thumbtack, I was at the end of my rope. My boyfriend and I had adopted a 1 year old American bulldog mix from a rescue in NY and were having trouble getting him to listen to us or bond with us, were experiencing a lot of behavioral issues and even some aggression and were considering bringing him back because we felt we were in over our heads. We had reached out to the rescue we adopted him from for help finding a trainer and they kept blowing us off. The rescue claimed to have spent donor money on his training, but all he had really learned was how to get treats and would not even do basic commands like sit or stay if food wasn't in the picture. Finally, in desperation, I googled dog trainers in my area and thumbtack popped up. I filled out a form and within minutes I received a reply from Christine DiCarlo at Canine Communications. I emailed her and she said I could call her any time so I did so immediately. Over the phone she could sense how desperate I felt and she drove an hour to come meet with us. She immediately assessed the situation and explained to me what was going on and how to fix it. We have been working with her for about 6 weeks and both humans and dogs are doing much better and have settled into our new lives. We even adopted another rescue puppy and Christine told me exactly how to introduce the pup to the dog and the home, thus saving us future problems. There have been a couple of desperate phone calls to Christine and every time I'm freaking out, she talks me off the ledge and everything settles back down. Without Christine, I don't think we would have gotten through the rough patches. She has trained me in what to do to have well behaved and secure dogs and in how to read my dogs because before her, I have to admit, I was clueless and an emotional wreck. We are all so lucky to have found her and her services. She really cares about us and our dogs, she knows what she's doing and she has saved my family and my sanity!

Sherry was and still is an excellent dog trainer for my puppy. She was referred to me by an old friend and from the first day that we met, she was very courteous and professional. She explained everything that she was going to do with my puppy and even gave options on payment plans. Ever since Sherry started with my puppy, who is now 14 months old, he has been an excellent addition to the family. My family owes much of his success to Sherry. Thank you so much.

I have worked with several dog trainers in the past and Ms. Fukumori is by far the most capable. She is direct and quietly assertive. Her methods are straight forward and our dog immediately responded to her authority. Several days later our mutt is a changed dog, much more manageable. Highly recommend her.

Chris was such a pleasure to work with! I have a 2 yr old male GSD that was out of control- he was very aggressive with people and dogs alike. We searched and spoke with many "qualified" dog trainers to no avail. After speaking with Chris, my husband and I were confident that he could help us. And that he absolutely did! He explained to us that each dog is different so it may be one session, it may be 4, but, he will fix it. And he did! 2 sessions and we are now the proud owners of a well behaved, proper boy. Highly recommend! Thanks again Chris!

I highly recommend Doug if you need ANY type of dog training. I rescued my 75lb young pitbull last August and went through 2 trainers before I started with Doug. This dog used to drag me around on walks, had no manners, wanted to eat my cats, and has a very high energy level. We did 5 lessons with Doug and Chelsea and my dog has changed more in the last 6 weeks than he has since I rescued him a year ago! Today I took him to the food truck festival in Hartford and he stayed right by my side, and didn’t even jump on the people who stopped to pet him. Also this evening we tried a little off leash on our walk and he stayed very close. I never thought I would be able to walk him without him pulling me or control him around my cats thanks to Doug and Chelsea I can take my dog anywhere and not worry about being that person who can’t control their dog!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

  • What type of training methods do you use?
  • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
  • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
