Richard has taught my daughter piano for 4 years now. When she was younger and had trouble sitting through a 30m lesson Richard would have special lessons prepared that incorporated movement. He would bring note and scale cards to lay on the floor and have her jump from one to the other which gave her a large scale perspective of the keyboard itself. Richard also had special methods for teaching rhythm and tempo with bouncing a ball and other games. Now that my daughter can sit through a 45 minute lesson, but is a bit more challenging with her strong personality, Richard always knows how to give her just enough time to say what she needs and then gets her back on track with the lesson. Richard has what I believe to be a very unique talent for connecting with students on whatever level they are at and is most impressive to me with the patience and respect he gives to students of all ages and levels of skill. We had a 6mo period when Richard moved out of state that we tried two other instructors and this is when I truly learned how unique and special Richards’s skills as an instructor are. I don’t care where he lives now we will ONLY do zoom lessons with Richard if we can’t do in-person with him because he is more effective on a tiny phone screen than other (highly recommended and accredited) instructors are in person. My daughter absolutely loves him and she usually not so comfortable with adults, especially if they are attempting to teach her something! I can’t recommend Richard highly enough. He is incomparable.

I had Richard Hagemann as my private pianolesson instructor at NYU this year spring and he has given me a great experience as my first piano teacher. Besides techniques and practices, he also gave me lots of background information and history about the pieces of music we learned. Also, he focuses on the performance of the performer, the mood, the stance, and so on. Overall, he shows his professionalism, and in my eyes, he is a great teacher with passion.

We were impressed with how he interacted and taught our 8-yr-old. He always showed enthusiasm and was responsive to our son's interest in music. He was easy to talk to and was always professional and courteous. His passion is not only shown in how he plays music but more importantly in how he teaches. We highly recommend Ricky!

FAQs
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to use the first couple of lessons to set goals and get to know the student’s personality, so I can tailor our lessons to their specific needs.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have over 20+ years of playing the piano as well as a bachelors and masters in piano performance. I also have an artistic certificate in piano pedagogy.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
I wanted to find alternative ways to use my skills as a musician and teaching seemed like a logical choice. It gives me the opportunity to foster the same enthusiasm I have for music in others.
