Mr. Lopez unclogged my very badly clogged bathroom sink which I could no longer use. He actually contacted me to state he would be late which is a big plus as most tradespeople either never show or don't bother to let you know they are running late. He also did an excellent clean-up job. I can now use my sink. Mr. Lopez is also a very nice man.

My mom needed to have her stove leveled, but she didn't know any handymen to help her with this. We found Harry on Thumbtack and made an appointment. Harry was prompt in communicating and setting up an appointment, he showed up on time and quickly leveled the stove. Harry was efficient, pleasant, professional and respectful. My mom and I were both very pleased with Harry - we'll definitely use his services again!

Marty has completed several projects for us in the past six years. Every one was expertly completed, on time, according to specifications. Marty's prices are very reasonable, his estimates accurate, and his workmanship excellent. He is exceptionally versatile. He can tackle almost anything, from carpentry to masonry, floor laying to plumbing, electrical to painting and pressure washing. Projects completed for us include the conversation of two bedrooms into a studio with kitchen, with a new vinyl floor and the addition of an outside/entry door; replace an existing single basin vanity with a two basin vanity, and new vinyl floor; remodeling our laundry room; pressure washing and painting the house exterior. Marty is an excellent, reliable and affordable all-rounder with a pleasant personality. We will request his services for any future project we might have. We recommend him highly. He is a jewel!

I have worked with contractors before and regrettable those experiences were less than ideal. I was pleasantly surprised with the responsiveness after my initial inquiry and the subsequent follow-up. Bob was fair and reasonable. We agreed to a price, date and time. We all have busy lives, I appreciate that my time was respected. I was not met with "extras" in terms of cost. He followed through on his commitment, going above and beyond. I am very happy with the quality of the work and professionalism. If I have a need for additional work I would use his services again!

Luther was excellent - helped me solve a problem with my sump pump that was just continually running. Luther takes the time to explain to you, and you can see he wants to fix it right the first time. He is quick to respond and even follows up after to see how you liked the work. Will use again. Thanks Luther

I had bought a Kettler Giro stationary bike which was shipped to my home thinking I could assemble it myself. Boy was I wrong! After unpacking everything I knew I needed a consummate professional (or at least someone who knows just "a little" more than me)! So I put my ad up on Thumbtack and within minutes heard from Ted Cook of Cook Contracting & Remodel. I called him, explained exactly what I needed, we agreed on date, time and price and that was it. Ted showed up on time, put the bike together, broke down the boxes and packing and put them in the garage for me (per my request) for garbage pick-up. Ted is a real nice guy, very sweet and easy to talk to. I won't hesitate to have him come back and tackle some of our bigger remodeling jobs in our home when we are ready.

Glenn was awesome. He was very knowledgeable and gave me a few options to work with regarding my window replacements and relocating my dryer vent. The best part was that he came on a Sunday when all the others I called told me they weren’t available on Sunday’s. Glenn Worked around my busy schedule to complete my project. The best part was the project only took a few hours to compete when we agreed on the date to start. All the work was done in one day. I was so happy I found Glenn. Now I know who to call when I need help repairing things around my house. And his price quotes were by far the best compared to other contractors.

I nearly went with the budget handy man hire for my bathroom remodel, and thank god I didn't. These guys and gals are a step above once it comes to professionalism and work quality. My bathroom remodel project went sideways when demolition turned into a nightmare scenario where the scope of the job had to have been expanded to remediate hidden problems lurking behind the walls. Luckily, Dimension does restoration and remodeling, and was able to get the job done efficienctly and PROPERLY. Not only am I happy with the quality in work, I am most greatful for everyone in the crew being able to explain options and procedures every step of the way. It's easy to be good when jobs are easy. It's better to use a company like Dimension if things end up not going as planned. Thank you to everyone at Dimension. I couldn't imagine working with anyone else.

We needed a total bathroom renovation and fast! Irving and his crew from Jerry & Carr were the first to respond on thumbtack, showing up that day to give us a fair and affordable estimate. They started a couple days later and did an a beautiful job. The bathroom looks amazing! They were quick, thorough and didn't leave a mess like most contractors. They were a pleasure to work with from start to finish! I HIGHLY recommend them!

Stenio and Marcelo were by far the best contractors I have hired. Great quality workmanship, courteous, and always on time. They estimated the work finished at approx 5 days, but worked long to finish a day before that to get my home in order for the thanksgiving holiday. Before I forget and their prices are very reasonable.

Chris was referred to me by a mutual friend who has good taste, a discerning eye for detail and owns a super cool music venue/bar restaurant. I've hired many builders and craftsmen and Chris is a Pro. Chris designed and built plaster and carpentry finishes to blend in with our existing style. The work was detailed, beautiful and he helped us design within our budget. He is easy to talk to and the whole work process was done precisely and on time. After it was done I considered him a friend. Overall, great experience and his work was a really good value.

We hired Mike last fall for a major project of removing 26 large multi-sized contemporary windows, and to replace them with new construction windows. A massive and daunting task when considering the scope of the project. He and his proficient work crew did an exemplary job finalizing the project beyond our expectations. We appreciated his ongoing communication, professional skills, attention to detail, the cleanliness of the worksite, and respect for our home. He completed the project, within the budget, which was a fair and competitive price and in a timely manner. Mike takes pride in his work, and no corners are cut. We recently rehired Mike to replace 3 multi-paneled sliding glass doors with stationary side panels which was also done equally well. We would highly recommend Goodman Builders to anyone seeking professional work, a knowledgeable, skilled, and respectful work crew, and value for your dollar.

We had our basement windows replaced by Dennis. From estimate to completion of the project, Dennis was very professional and timely. He was very knowledgeable about the options for replacing our single-pane original windows and the installation. All five of our windows were replaced in one day and they look fantastic. We will definitely be using DJP Home Remodeling for future projects.

The very best and very professional!! I hired Calo Renovations to repair some water damage and some insect damage in my 3 bay garage as i was preparing to sell the associated property. I secured a multitude of quotes for the job and chose Calo Renovations based on the knowledge level and attitude of the forman who came to look at the job. Additionally their price was very fair. The job was completed on time, for the agreed upon price, and I was given updates every so often, often enough to be helpful insight into the progress made, but not so often to be bothersome, and they cleaned up after themselves. Mike Calo was always honest with me and always accommodating. Even after the bill was paid he went over and above to help me provide proof of completion to my buyers' underwriter when they were not satisfied with an invoice. Calo Renovations was a pleasure to work with and I will definitely hire them again for all of my future repair and renovation needs.

Exceptional does not even begin to describe the quality of work that James and his crew accomplish. The craftsmanship and attention to detail I have seen from this company is unmatched by any other. I have been in real estate for several years now and around construction my entire life. The quality of work and the work ethic of every employee within J. Agate & Co. Builders far surpasses any company I have worked with in the past. I highly recommend them for any job you have to make your house a dream home.

Moyan renovated our bathroom for us. It was a complete gut job. The space was a bit small and couldn’t quite picture what I wanted in there. He asked me a lot of questions and got a feel as to what I wanted. He picked out the tile, vanity, tile for the shower and designed it. The way he laid everything out along with the colors he used with material, I never pictured my bathroom could look so beautiful. Him and his crew were very professional and great. Will definitely use him for future projects!

Chris did a significant amount of renovation work for us in the fall of 2016, including dry wall, tile work, wood flooring and replacing window and door casings. His work proposal was very detailed and provided cost detail for each part of this project. He is very neat and always ends his day by cleaning the house, insuring that all the dust and debris is cleaned up. He also has a significant list of other business colleagues who he can call when he needs additional resources. Chris is a good communicator and always kept us informed on his progress.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a general contractor?

When starting a home remodel or new construction project, you will probably hire a general contractor. A general contractor is a professional who is qualified to take a set of building plans and construct them as outlined. The general contractor may help perform the day-to-day building, or they may just hire workers and oversee all the work activities. In either case, the job of the general contractor is to see that your project gets built.

When you have a building project, ask for bids from various contractors. The bids tell you how much each will charge and what their scope of work will be. Once you have selected a bid, you sign a contract with that general contractor outlining the specifics of the project and the milestones during the project when they will receive payment installments. Once the contract is official, the general contractor will bring in their crew to begin construction. The contractor will manage the workers and subcontractors (anyone who doesn’t work directly for their company but that they need to outsource, like a marble installation pro), order all the materials, obtain work permits, and confirm that all the workers and subcontractors are completing their projects as planned. They typically handle all the payments to the workers and subcontractors, and send you invoice. For all these reasons, it’s also especially important to follow a few smart hiring practices when it comes to finding a general contractor.  If you are organized and competent to oversee construction projects, and are able to make sure everything is being built properly and meeting code, it’s possible you can be your own general contractor.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
