We were looking for a trainer for our 7 month old puppy for behavior training. We had one visit so far and were very happy with the information we learned. I would recommend coexisting canine training..

Wonderful experience with Suzanne who has worked beautifully with our 10 month old dog and was able to give us lots of practical advice to train the dog. Suzannne was also very good with the children, helping them understand their role in the dog's training.

I purchased my German Shepherd from Robin last fall and he has honestly been such an amazing dog (not to mention gorgeous coat). She worked with him prior to me picking him up and he was virtually house broken already and only had a couple accidents in the house (less than 5). She had also worked with me one on one with training both Moose and myself how to respond to certain issues and how to train his commands. I definitely recommend Robin for her dog training skills and think she does a wonder job and is very experienced especially with GS dogs.

Andrew was excellent! He is very relaxed and clear with instructions, and knew just how to get my dog, Pippin, to love him from the first moment they met. I'd done some training on my own with Pippin, but we reached a road block where I wasn't sure how to continue to make progress with him. Andrew helped break the steps down to be really manageable, and with some consistent homework on my part, we made huge leaps! Where we started: Pippin knew a few commands like sit and lay down while in the house, but whenever there were new people, other dogs or distractions, he would get hyperactive and wouldn't listen at all... On walks, most of the time it was like he didn't even realize I was there, and it was almost impossible to catch his attention. Where we ended up after training with Andrew: Pippin is now MUCH more polite when greeting people and other dogs, walks calmly outside and is a great listener! Even friends and family members have commented on how calm, relaxed and obedient he has become! I'm thrilled that by using the techniques we covered with Andrew, Pippin and I have developed a stronger bond and healthier habits that will ultimately keep him safer on our outings. Thanks, Andrew!!

Joyce works great with my female Rottweiler. When I hired her my pup had previous training of basic commands, and was well behaved. Joyce enabled me to have more control of my dog, and she is now able to go out with me without a leash. With her style of dog training it gave me a deeper bond with my dog. In addition, it has given me peace of mind that my dog will listen to the commands that I am giving her. I would recommend Joyce to any dog owner regardless of what needs they may have. I have recommended Joyce to my girlfriend and they have just started training her Shiba Inu! It has been such a great time working with her. Every training session she sends out a recap of the training so you don't miss a beat.

I have two dogs, a fox hound and a weimeraner. The two dogs would violently fight with each other, which was very scarey indeed. The weimeraner was impossible for me to walk on the leash and he had separation anxiety. Rick assessed these issues right away! Within the first session, I was able to handle walking my dog, with pleasure. Then he worked on the aggression issue and it's been a year since the training and there has not been one fight between them. Also, the weimeraner is able to spend extended periods of time alone without issue now. If you are looking for a trainer, Rick is, without question, the best out there.

Christine aka "the new dog whisperer" not only taught me how to train my dog she took the time to get to know me. She was spot on with dog training and behavioral issues. She helped me become "the leader of the pack" using dog-friendly, techniques (NO SHOCK COLLAR, OR HARSH METHODS EVER!!!). Her goal was for my dog to love and respect me not fear me . She will work with you in your home addressing issues such as housebreaking, separation anxiety, aggression, jumping up, puppy nipping, walking on leash, and much more. Christine can help you with ANY BREED, ANY AGE, ANY ISSUE! Christine was available to help work around my hectic schedule and allowed time for the whole family to be involved. Before Christine trained Roxy our "French Mastiff" Roxy was jumping up on our company , barking non-stop , pulling on the leash to the point we could not walk her without our arms being pulled outta our sockets, begging for food and not listening to her commands such as sit , stay and come . With just a few shorts weeks Roxy was and is a changed dog . She is gentle , never jumps up on people or furniture . Our Roxy couldn't have made this transition without the training of Christine!

Joshua was amazing with my families two dogs. He genuinely cares about the dogs he works with and is great with them. Our puppy is doing so much better and has come such a long way thanks to him. Even after the training sessions were complete Joshua was still there months later to help me with any questions or concerns that I had. Would recommend Backcountry K-9 to everyone who is looking for a very experienced and caring trainer. Thank you!

Gus gave us excellent advice and educated us so that we better understand our dog's behavior. Our rotties responded very well to him and his training techniques and we are continuing to work on training them ourselves. I am more confident now, that we can do this! Thank you Gus!

We worked with The Canine Company for one session of dog training. While they are great for obedience training they were not suited for our needs. We were specifically looking for someone who could help us acclimate our new dog to our cats that have been in our family for two years.

My husband and I live in an apartment and needed our new puppy to be able to live in an apartment life style. We researched on the Websites for a training centre who would be able to assist us in training our puppy to adjust to his new surroundings. We certainly made the right choice when choosing K9 National Services, we are extremely happy with the results and our puppy. We have found Nikhil to be a very professional and caring person in the way he handles his business and clients. Nik you are amazing, thank you for all the loving hard work you do....

I met Charli when I was training my pug, Rosie, to become a therapy dog. Rosie is a bit older so I was unsure if this would be possible. Charli is patient and kind with all of the dog owners and just as patient and kind with the dogs with a wonderful confidence that she uses in her training techniques. If you use Charli for dog training you can be sure you are in good hands. She doesn't stop until both dog and owner are completely trained. Her knowledge and experience can't be matched. I definitely recommend The Dog Chick!!!

I worked with Chris when he was just starting. I have a female Rottweiler mix who was very dog aggressive and I was trying to rescue another dog. I had my dog for 7 years before I was able to have her around another dog. I thought it was impossible. I was very nervous after breaking up multiple dog fights with her and getting bitten once. Chris gave me the tools to be in control of my dog. He made me confident and made it fun. Training with my dog was something I looked forward to and was proud of. I saw progress every week. We now have not only adopted another dog, we have adopted 3 more! My dog that I started with assists me in training the new guys. She is confident and content and has a completely new attitude. Chris completely changed how I interacted with my dog. Thank you so much!

Shana is training our Golden, Delilah, to be my service dog. She has tremendous patience, calmness and firmness with Deli. Shana helps her stay on on a straight and narrow path walking thru all the stores in Roosevelt Mall. The mall was over crowded today due to the holiday and Shana kept Deli calm and focused on her training.

My 8 month old shar pei was a good dog. Smart too but true to his breed he was stubborn!! I had tried other trainers who helped but he needed more. Hiring JOLEAN at k9 advanced was the best choice I made!! She worked wonders w my dog and he truly tested her expertise and skill!! He was a true challenge for her but I now have a well trained dog and friend. Jolean was dedicated and determined that he be the dog I hoped he would be. I am very thankful to Jolean and highly recommend her. She far exceeded my expectations.

Alex has been our saviour with our dog Biscuit! Biscuit is a one year old giant Schnoodle (he was only 9 months old when Alex started working with him) who is very sweet but very smart and naughty when he doesn't get the exercise or full attention at all times. Alex has worked with us in training him so that he knows and respects us and our children in our house. When we adopted Biscuit he was TERRIBLE at walking on a leash. He pulled and pulled and I couldn't walk him with the stroller which was very frustrating. After Alex trained us how to walk him properly he's now a dream to walk. We also hire Alex as a walker and he takes Biscuit for daily "hikes" that gives him the exercise a dog of his size and age needs so that he's calm and loving when at home with our family. When the dogs go swimming when hiking Alex even cleans Biscuit up before returning him so that he doesn't smell. I couldn't say enough great things about Alex! He's thoughtful to how to train each individual dog based on their unique personality, is beyond helpful when scheduling, and ALWAYS reliable when coming to get our dog and takes incredible care of him.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

      • What type of training methods do you use?
      • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
      • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
