Our move was a bit difficult given construction in front of our downtown building that shut down our drive up lane. The movers had to park around the corner, which held us up a bit. Overall they were good and everything went fine.

Cesar was great to work with. He showed up on time, with all the possible tools and materials we might need, and worked alongside me to install some trellises in our garden. Would definitely recommend him to others!

I wanted to remodel my row house and spoke to Ed about remodeling the kitchen first. He gave me lot of options to choose from. The options are very high end and i wanted something in a budget, he gave me options within my budget and it's been 2 days since they started working. There planning and workmanship is excellent. I will recommend this contractor for remodeling kitchen. I've proposed him to Remodel my entire house and also to build a deck as well. Had to pay a retainer to EBRR for the drawings and permits, but I'm happy with the services I'm getting.

Trenton is AWESOME. My parents and I attempted to build an IKEA wardrobe for approximately 4 hours, ending in a near divorce and having to take it all apart. Trenton built the entire thing in ONE HOUR, by himself. He was very easy to communicate with ahead of time and a very skilled professional during the entire process. He assembled the wardrobe perfectly and for a very reasonable price. Do yourself a favor and hire Trenton for any handy-work you need done! I've already passed his name around to everyone I know.

Great experience. We hired Rob to build a very large, complicated, and heavy loft bed/desk/closet combo for us from Ikea. He was prompt, polite, and finished the unit sooner than expected.

Tim worked on various installations and assemblies, like assembling a stepping stool, wooden futon, and installing towel racks and curtain rods, etc. He is a hard worker and seems to have endless energy. I have been very happy with the above mentioned work, and found that he was willing to go the extra mile to deal with problems encountered along the way, e.g. a weird plastic piece appearing on what was supposed to be a bronze metal towel rack, so he did nifty things to hide the plastic. However, more recently, an assignment he had happily accepted--to build two side tables and a coat rack--had to be aborted. Unfortunately that was after lots and lots of time had passed, I wished he had called it off or not accepted the assignment in the first place unless he could see it through, so that I could have had the items done by someone else long ago, as I was desperate to get several home improvement things out of the way. The side tables--which are pretty--were done for the most part but not fully (I still need to find another woodworker to do the unfinished business) and the coat rack was not done at all. Somehow his heart was simply not in it anymore, but would have been better to just straightforwardly cancel a job rather than dragging things out. This is why I am giving 4 instead of 5 stars. He did feel bad about how things went with these three pieces and therefore didn't charge me for one of the side tables.

This company deserves overall a Zero! I hired them to help me move my 1 bedroom apartment from MD to DC. I should have cancelled it from the very beginning when they wanted to charge me extra money for using my credit card vs cash!!?? Moving day: The time for arrival was set for 4 pm. The owner kept on postponing the arrival time with various stories why they were being late. I told them we needed to be at my building by 8pm as that was the end of the moving in time window and the building loading dock was closing at that time. I send several texts and tried calling multiple times to the company. They arrived close to 7 pm. WE arrived at my building late. I had to waste my time looking for a security guard who was kind enough to cooperate with us and let us use another loading dock which was a real hike to my entrance ( another extra hour wasted) . My plants were broken and I feared other items did too. And I was right. I demanded discount for the service and to be also reimbursed for the broken items. we negotiated discount and as I was tired and frustrated i agreed to 15% off. As for the reimbursement, I was told to send them all the photos of broken items and estimated cost. I did. Even after a number of emails and phone calls and almost 2 and a half months after the service, I have not been reimbursed yet. NEVER USE THIS COMPANY. BAD CUSTOMER SERVICE

Highly Highly recommend! The first day they came out and put together coffee tables, couches, hung pictures among many other things. Asked them if they could come back and help me build shelves in my closet the following day and did so. On top of it, they shopped for everything we needed which saved us so much time. If needed, I would definitely hire them again!

Highly recommend! Jenrri and his team did new drywall on my kitchen ceiling and you can not even see where the old ceiling starts in the dining room/living room and merges with the new ceiling in the kitchen. There were a number of really tricky things to deal with including a lot of unlevel areas, different ceiling thicknesses to match up to, and Jenrri even found the perfect custom shade of white paint to match the old ceiling area which saved me from having to repaint everything. His team works quickly and they took care to limit the sanding dust from getting all over my house. I'm very happy with the end result. Thank you!

Erick and his crew did a great job constructing an outdoor shed we purchased from Lowes. They had to build a foundation because it was on a slight incline. They added the flashing and shingles in addition to building the shed from scratch. We were pleased with their excellent work and would recommend them to others.

Herbert was great to work with. We had work on a few things for our office, handyman tasks including building a wooden frame to cover a bunch of wires, cutting a table, fixing a door, hanging few things. Our job was 2 days long. He arrived on time both days, the first day he went to home depot to buy some supplies we didnt have, kept the receipt, he was very honest about his costs and time. Proficient with his work and is very handy, easy to communicate with, nice guy. Will definitely work with him again!

We had Henry build a custom entertainment center for us. From the very beginning he was very responsive and always came through by doing exactly what he said he would. He came by once to see the space and hear my ideas. Not only was he receptive to my ideas but he also came up with his own suggestions as well which I really appreciated. After our meeting, he followed up with a sketch/quote and then returned again to take additional measurements and make sure we were still on the same page before starting the work. The cabinet he built is absolutely beautiful and the quality is excellent. He even helped save me from making the wrong decision about the stain color. He has gone above and beyond and I would recommend working with him to anyone. Thanks, Henry!!

Gilberto is very professional and the work that his company has done for us has been terrific. He widened my deck and added stairs, stained the deck and built lattice as a privacy screen for my carport. His estimate was timely and he began the work on the promised day.

I needed to dispose of an old vacuum cleaner, a dismantled shelf, and some old gardening/landscaping materials. JJ Handyman Services came and hauled away the items the same day that I made my initial request. It feels great having a decluttered space. Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
