Uma is a caring and loving individual and it shows in her work. I met Uma at a time when my personal trainer suggested that I get massage therapy to complement my workouts. I found Uma and the Lotus Wellness Center and my life changed from the first appointment almost four years ago. Not only did I receive the benefit of holistic massage therapy, I also started back on track with my spiritual awareness, something I had put on hold for too long. Visiting with Uma awakened my spirit again for which I am very grateful. I have also taken Reiki classes with Uma and am proud to say that I am a Reiki Master and use Reiki in my everyday life. I highly recommend an experience with Uma because it will most certainly change your life at some level. She is special and she will help you find the specialness in you.

I was struck by lightning late June and as a result am dealing with so many health issues. Deanna is amazing and is helping me get my life back, my sessions with her are the highlight of my week. Plus she gives me quick lessons about how to do healing work on my self. She is very knowledgeable. The sessions are extremely grounding and relaxing - Jin shin Jyutsu truly aligns the mind, body and spirit with the universe and Deanna helps make that happen. I sleep better and eat better, and I am noticeably more calm when I find myself in situations that once made me nervous or anxious. I was diagnosed with PCOS two years ago and since seeing Deanna my periods are regular and consistent without the help of any medication! A weekly session with Deanna is giving you and your body the self care you deserve.

Mr. Tsakounis (Thom) is a skilled and caring therapist. We came to "A Quiet Journey Counseling " center for couples counseling. My husband was very reluctant at first, but quickly found Thom to be a supportive and understanding ally. Feeling like Thom "got " him, and us, allowed our work with Thom to progress quickly. As a mental health therapist myself, I have very high expectations for fellow counselors. Thom met or exceeded my expectations! He is well versed in a number of holistic, cognitive behavioral and Gestalt modalities, and a genuinely caring human being. While my husband and I have more work to do, Thom has supported us and given us new tools to communicate more effectively in our relationship. I reccommend Mr. Tsakounis whole-heartedly!

Amazing. That word sums up my massage, my experience as well as her on a personal level. She is very in tune with ones body, pains and personal needs just by listening and touch. She would be massaging me and go directly to spots I was having an issue without me having to disclose them to her. It's like she has a sixth sense when it comes to massage and healing. She is a must for those who suffer daily with pain due to health issues. I've had many countless massages in my life done by many countless therapists but she, hands down, is my fav! Give her a chance...you won't be disappointed...you'll only be hooked.

Eating healthy, getting in shape, and losing weight had been a long overdue goal of mine. I didn't want a shortcut that wouldn't last, I wanted a lifestyle change. Longed for a more balenced, happy life.. So I signed up for a health & fitness challenge at work. Andrea helped me in every area. I couldn't have WON the competition without her (first woman in a decade to win the annual competition)! She is super knowledgeable, motivating, and supportive at the same time!

Keren at Nourish Well, LLC has truly been a godsend. One year ago, I found myself suffering from debilitating symptoms, which included nausea, dizziness, severe anxiety, and heart palpitations. My doctor gave me a few diagnoses, none of which were treatable. I was miserable, scared, and overwhelmed...that is until I began treatment with Keren. Keren listened intently, asked meaningful questions about my symptoms and health history, and formed a plan to heal the underlying causes of my symptoms. I felt relief and comfort knowing that there was a path to better health laid out before me. Within days of following this new wellness protocol, I was functional in my normal daily activities. Within weeks, all my acute symptoms had subsided. Months later, even my occasional dizziness, heartburn, and mild anxiety had faded away. I have enthusiastically continued treatment with Keren to work on my other wellness goals, and will continue to do so as my body and environment change. Keren has always been warm, caring, accessible, and committed to improving my health and wellness. Her approach to treatment is aimed at the entire person-body, mind, and spirit-not just the symptoms. Her expertise in several fields of wellness and natural therapies support this integrated approach, which I have benefited from immensely. Optimal health and wellness is attainable, and I'm so grateful to have Keren to guide me there.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is naturopathic medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is classified as an alternative healing method, but licensed naturopathic doctors share some of the same academic background as conventional medical doctors and can often prescribe some medications. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP), naturopathic medicine is holistic care that addresses a wide range of problems including (but not limited to) allergies, chronic pain, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, obesity, respiratory conditions, heart disease, fertility problems, menopause, adrenal fatigue, cancer, fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome. Naturopathic medicine aims to strengthen and empower the body and its organs to heal itself through low-force interventions. Here are some examples of the type of medical services often provided by naturopathic doctors, as cited by the AANP:

      • Clinical and laboratory diagnostic testing
      • Nutritional medicine
      • Botanical medicine
      • Naturopathic physical medicine (including naturopathic manipulative therapy)
      • Hygiene
      • Counseling
      • Minor surgery
      • Homeopathy
      • Acupuncture
      • Intravenous and injection therapy
      • Naturopathic obstetrics (natural childbirth)

      Do naturopaths take insurance?

Many naturopathic doctors accept insurance, but a separate question is whether your insurance covers alternative and naturopathic services. There are several steps you can take to find out:

      • Verify whether you live in one of the 20 states that currently licenses naturopathic physicians:
        • Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, District of Columbia, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Vermont and Washington.
      • Confirm whether your insurance will cover naturopathic medical services. Read your insurance plan’s fine print, verify whether naturopathic doctors fall into your insurance carrier’s definition of a doctor, and confirm that the care you are receiving is considered medically necessary. Questions to ask your insurance provider could include:
        • Am I covered for this treatment by a naturopathic physician?
        • Do I need a referral?
        • Is there a list of approved naturopathic doctors in my network?
        • What will the co-pay be?
        • Are there limits to my naturopathic coverage?
      • Before seeking medical care, it’s key to understand the difference between a naturopathic doctor and a naturopath. Anyone may advertise themselves as a naturopath, while to be a licensed naturopathic doctor, a person must complete academic and clinical training.

      Can naturopathic doctors prescribe medication?

Licensed naturopathic doctors can prescribe some pharmaceutical medication. Naturopathic doctors complete academic training similar to that of conventional physicians: a bachelor’s degree with a focus on pre-med studies, followed by a four-year residential naturopathic medical program whose first two years have a similar foundation to that of a conventional medical school. After completing their studies, they must pass a post-doctoral exam. Although licensed naturopathic physicians are able to prescribe medication, they usually focus on prevention rather than treatment of symptoms. A naturopathic doctor will offer a holistic approach to your care that encompasses your mental, physical and emotional health. While they will prescribe medication as needed to treat illness, they are also likely to be creating shifts in your lifestyle and nutrition to effect deeper changes in your body’s response to illness.

How do you find a good naturopath?

It’s important not to get misled by the title “naturopath” when searching for a naturopathic doctor. A naturopathic doctor is a licensed professional, while anyone who so desires can call themselves a naturopath. A naturopathic doctor has completed eight years of schooling and is licensed to provide high-quality medical care. When searching for a naturopathic doctor, a good place to start is by researching your state’s licensing and regulatory body for that profession.

Currently, 20 U.S. states license the practice of naturopathic medicine. For those seeking holistic, body-centered healing solutions, a naturopathic doctor can be a good fit. They use natural medicines as well as treatments such as electrotherapy and ayurvedic medicine to encourage the body to heal. Once you have determined a list of naturopathic physicians who are licensed in your state, look for reviews, ask for referrals, and interview the physician in person or by phone to find the right care provider for your health needs.

How long do naturopathic doctors go to school?

Like conventional physicians, naturopathic doctors undergo rigorous academic and clinical training prior to practice. Typically naturopathic doctors go to school for eight years. There are currently 20 states in the U.S. that provide licensing for naturopathic doctors. According to the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians, a naturopathic doctor must complete a bachelor’s degree and an accredited four-year residential naturopathic medical program, and pass an extensive postdoctoral board examination, the Naturopathic Physicians Licensing Examinations (NPLEX), in order to receive a license or registration to practice medicine.

The first two years of the residential naturopathic medical program cover many of the same areas of study as conventional medical schools. Naturopathic doctors provide primary patient holistic care. The goal of naturopathic medicine is preventative care and a focus on low force intervention healing methods. This can include natural medicines, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, homeopathy and much more. Naturopathic doctors often work in tandem with conventional medical doctors, as the two practices complement one another.
