We moved into a two-bedroom house and our designer recommended EBRR as a general contractor for our major renovation projects. Luis, the project manager, came in, listened to all our needs and specificity notated our request. We had a complete estimate for everything within only a few days including cost and time frames. Barry and EBRR was able to accommodate with all architect's drawings, all subcontractors and permits. The work was done on time and within budget, even with the inevitable surprises that always come up during renovation. They were punctual, always respectful and very neat.

My review: Jose of EES Services arrived on the date and time promised, in fact, he showed up early to accommodate my schedule. He was professional, polite, and thoughtful in our interaction. He did the job thoroughly and completely, and worked in the pouring rain to get my gutter cleaned! I couldn't be happier with the result and I highly recommend EES Services for any of your home repair needs.

Tim was truly outstanding. He was on time, professional, courteous, and even took time to show me a few tricks when I expressed interest. I had a ceiling leak that needed drywall repair, and it's one of the toughest jobs out there, but Tim did a great job and stayed late to make sure it was done right. I couldn't have asked for more, and I'll be going to him directly for all future projects around my house.

Sam and his partner from Glass Co responded almost immediately to my request for a quote. They came over that same day to repair a broken double pane window in my living room. He repaired it on the spot and was finished in about a half hour. He was very professional and did an excellent job. I will hire him again should I have any other glass repair needs.

We have a 118+ year old house with lots of work to be done all the time. Having lived here for 14 years, we have hired many contractors. After our first experience in working with Ordonez Home Improvement, my husband and I were so extremely pleased with the work quality, value, and professionalism that we have at least two additional projects for which we plan to contract with Ordonez Home Improvement in the very near future. The initial work included tiling, plumbing, painting and door rehanging/repair. In some instances, the engagement included correcting the work of prior contractors. We have received very fair bids for additional work and, pending receipt of materials, we look forward to working with Ordonez Home Improvement again.

David arrived today after a phone call and a couple of emails yesterday to repair two holes in our ceiling. He covered everything in plastic and proceeded to do any excellent job on the repair. He is very meticulous with the work. No mess when the work was competed. We plan to have him give us an estimate for some additional work.

I give Jose Gonzalez and his team top marks. The paint job they did on the interior of my home (three stories, 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths) and exterior front entrance was outstanding and exceeded my expectations. Replacement of the front storm door and locks on two exterior doors was also excellent, as was staining of my deck, repair to a piece of siding, complete interior house cleaning, and shampooing of all carpets. Their attention to detail was phenomenal. Not only was the paint job fantastic, but they took great care in ensuring there was no errant paint on floors/carpet, etc. Jose took great pains to ensure all work was perfect. When he was not satisfied about an aspect of the job, he had it redone until it met his demanding standards and I was completely satisfied. In order to compete the job within the allotted time, Jose and his crew worked long hours. Thanks to Jose and his team, my house never looked so good and I am confident that it will be sold quickly at a premium price. Jose and Brandon have my highest recommendation for any home repair/painting project; if Jose says they can do it, be assured that it will be done to the highest standards and completed on time.

I created a project to have some outside floodlight fixtures repaired because new lights weren't powering on. Rodney was no muss, no fuss. He arrived on time, actually hours earlier than estimated within the time frame because I wasn't working that day. He worked cooly, calmly, and collectively with intention rather than lallygagging around; neither slowly or hurriedly. Fixed the problem and explained what it was, without any attempt to overstate the problem, add unnecessary time to the clock, or up sell services or cost to repair. Though skilled at what he does, he spoke plainly and simply so that I could understand what the problem was, which he quickly troubleshot and immediately diagnosed. Pricing was very fair, hourly, but he fixed the problem under an hour, but estimated before arrival that resolution shouldn't extend beyond two hours. Confidence, I like that. Long story short: I tipped him closer to two hours which comments on the fairness of his pricing and the satisfaction of his results. Even when one's satisfied with a resolution but feels the repair costs were necessarily expensive or more costly than they should be, one never, ever tips. So would I hire him again? Of course: He's my new permanent electrician. Thanks!

Erick and his team are exceptional. I contracted Erick initially to do some minor house repairs. However, after not being satisfied with the work of contractor hired to paint, I asked Erick to do a lot more work to include painting, installation of kitchen appliance, replace flooring, miscellaneous carpentry, and electrical work. Erick was so responsive to my need to get the work done quickly as getting ready to list house. Quality of work is good, Erick knows his trade and made suggestions and recommendations that proved to be invaluable. His team are hard workers and take pride in what they do. And, the pricing is exceptional. Definitely recommend and will use again in the future.

I had a shattered window that Eddie fixed. Since he took my broken frame back to his shop he waived the deposit, which was great. He brought the frame back with new glass in it, and also replaced latches on three other windows. He made the repair within the proposed timeframe and was friendly and professional. Price was a bit on the high side, but I felt it was worth it since he was the first one to sound like he knew what he was talking about after calls to several other contractors and was quick to respond on a Sunday! I will definitely keep Eddie in mind next time next time I need help around the house!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
