Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do packing services cost?

The cost of packing services ranges between $60 and $80. However, the cost you wind up paying will depend on a number of different factors. These factors include whether you have provided the moving boxes yourself or need to purchase them from the company, as well as the hourly rate of the packing service may charge. A larger-size home or office will often result in higher packing costs, as will the need to handle a lot of fragile or especially heavy/cumbersome items.

What are the advantages of packing services?

Hiring a professional packing service can help ensure your heavy, fragile and special-care belongings are handled safely during your move. These pros are familiar with all types of packing procedures and materials, and they’ll use the right tools and equipment to move your belongings. Packers and movers are also available to assist with cumbersome items like mattresses, safes and large furniture, and they can handle heavy lifting. And if needed, packers can disassemble and assemble furniture for you.

Who do I hire for unpacking and packing help?

Hire a professional moving, packing or unpacking service in your area for help. You can use a tool like Thumbtack to see the best services in your area, along with their ratings and reviews. Once you’ve identified a few professionals who seem like a good fit, get cost estimates from each of them and compare your quotes. Also, don’t forget to check licensing requirements in your state to make sure the professional you hire is properly licensed and insured.

Is it worth paying for packing services when moving?

The decision of whether to pay for packing services during your move will come down to time versus cost. Packing services will increase the cost of your move. But if you’re busy and need to save your time to handle other priorities, it could be worth the cost. Talk to movers and packing services near you to find one that offers benefits that are worth the cost.

How do I prepare my house for a professional packer?

To prepare your house for a professional packer, start by completing a deep house cleaning and organizing session. This includes washing dishes, tools, laundry, beds, etc. Next, get rid of anything and everything you don’t need. Collect items that you plan on moving yourself. Organize everything, and label each box, marking anything that is high-value. Finally, have everything in a position where it’s easy for the packers and movers to access.

What is a packing service?

A packing service helps homeowners and businesses pack up their belongings in preparation for a move, as well as unpack items when moving in. They’re often used to help with large numbers of items and are a great choice when there are multiple floors to contend with.

Professional packing services can also provide boxes or use the boxes you provide them. They can also help assemble furniture and perform heavy lifting, as well as deal with valuable, delicate or cumbersome items.

Do movers unpack for you?

Yes, many movers offer unpacking services for you once they deliver your belongings to your new site, or even if you have already had them delivered. However, be aware that this could lead to higher charges, so be sure to ask the movers what their rates are. Movers also don’t usually put items away, but rather set them on tabletops and other surfaces. Some moving companies may have a policy preventing them from unpacking boxes you have packed yourself.

When should you start packing?

You should start picking up packing supplies (moving boxes, etc.) at least one to three months before you move. The earlier, the better. Start by cleaning your house and deciding what you will be taking, then follow up by selling or donating whatever you don’t need. At around four weeks out, decide on a moving service and schedule your move-out date. And start the packing process by putting your belongings into boxes, wrapping furniture and organizing for the unload.

Do movers pack boxes for you?

Many moving companies offer packing services as well. While the typical role of movers is to move already-packed boxes, furniture and other belongings, these pros are also skilled in safely packing belongings in less time than the average person. They have the materials and experience to protect fragile items and predict potential damage in the moving process. This is particularly important for glass and artwork.

Where do you start packing when moving out?

When deciding on what to pack first, think about how you can minimize disruptions to your everyday life. For example, start with storage areas such as the basement or attic. These items are not likely to be needed in the next few weeks. Next, move onto storage areas like the shed, closet and garage. Pack away any out-of-season items you won’t need in the next month. Then, move on to tools, equipment, books, collections and displays you don’t utilize in your day-to-day life. Things like clothes, towels, sheets and dishes should be packed closer to your move-out date.

This company had great reviews, so I trusted that, when they sent me a quote for professional packing rates, I would receive professional packing services. Unfortunately, they sent someone who must typically clean houses rather than packing boxes. The first box she packed contain ALL of our fragile dishware. Different sized pieces were stacked together, just as they came out of the cupboards, with the entire stack wrapped in a sheet of packing paper rather than each fragile item individually wrapped. Everything was sliding and clanking around. And the box was very heavy. If my partner hadn't caught this, we would have ended up with several (perhaps many) broken dishes. Rather than getting the services we agreed to, my partner had to watch the employee like a hawk, instructing her how to appropriately pack boxes. And my partner ended up doing a lot of the packing herself. Thus, we didn't need the full 3 hours we estimated needing. Although I was extremely disappointed with the quality of the service I received, I wasn't going to raise a stink about it. The employee was nice. It's just that her company is trying to present as a professional packer when she clearly hasn't received sufficient training. However, when I told the company that she only worked for 2.5 hours, the person who responded was completely rude and unprofessional, demanding the amount for 3 hours because we supposedly had "an agreement" for that amount of time. To be fair, he did update the invoice to reflect 2.5 hours. But, over the course of 2 emails, he also told me that I should have hired a different company (yep - duly noted) and that he will report me to collections if I don't pay. That's a pretty quick and knee-jerk threat to throw at someone who isn't even delinquent on a payment that they owe, especially when you're the one who breached the contract (by failing to send a professional packer) and especially when I never said I wouldn't pay! I simply stated that I'm not going to pay until we unpack because I don't trust that the company packed everything well enough to avoid breakage. Sum: Definitely don't hire this company for packing services. And if you hire them for cleaning, be prepared to deal with a rude and unprofessional owner/manager if you run into any problems. Oh, and he'll very likely threaten you with collections right off the bat. Yeehaw! My advice to this owner/manager? 1. Don't charge professional packing rates when you're a cleaning company that apparently doesn't have professional packers. 2. Be accommodating and apologetic when a customer complains about the service you provided, rather than doubling down on demands that they pay you the agreed amount. 3. Don't threaten someone with collections on the day you provide service. Wait until the bill is actually delinquent before you do so. Oh, and read up on the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act. 4. Be a better human.

Alex and his team are the BEST at what they do. I'd like to award Allee Packing Pros *one million* stars and name an airport or stadium after them. In March 2020, as the pandemic was shutting down DC, I had to make a last-minute cross-country move. Flying solo, I was blessed to locate Allee Packing Pros. They were graciously willing to help at the last minute and packed my 2 bedroom/2 bath in a handful of hours. True professionals, Alex and his teammate (I'm frustrated I can't remember the gentleman's name, he was incredible!) SHINED. Skilled, thoughtful and fast, both men are wonderful humans and were a pleasure (and calming influence) to have in my home. At one point, there was a small hiccup; Alex resolved the situation with great integrity and customer service. I'm forever grateful to Allee Packing Pros for alleviating the bulk of my moving stress through their amazing work, positive personas and ability to work cooly (even joyfully!) under pressure. But wait, there's more...Originally, my belongings were being transported and delivered within a week. Alas, the pandemic demolished my plans and all earthly possessions were hastily tossed in storage for a total of 15 months (8 months in, everything was relocated to another location). While storage conditions weren't ideal, Allee Packing Pros' work was EXPERT. I *just* received my belongings--packed in March 2020 and physically moved a total of 6 times--and am amazed by the amount of care and skill that went into the packing job! Thank you, Alex and team, for your dedication and expertise; it made for a phenomenal outcome. For those reading this review, Allee Packing Pros deserve your business (and five times what they charge!).

VKH Movers provided us with one of the smoothest moving experiences ever. They are super responsive, punctual and provide amazing service while still being budget friendly. We did the packing ourselves and they took care of packing big electronics and disassembling furniture. We used their services to move across the country from DC to Arizona. When we requested a quote from them, they came over to the apartment, did a quick evaluation and provided us with a quote within 24 hrs. On the day of the move, they showed up right on time, were super professional, and delivered our belongings across the country within 4 days! HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

Great guy, very organized and knows what he's doing so was able to work on other things and didn't need to worry about micromanaging. Was looking for someone to help pack up my apartment after I realized that there was no way I would be able to do it myself within the time restraints I had. Alex swooped in and saved the day. He was incredibly accommodating and flexible regarding scheduling, great communication, just an all around awesome guy. Highly recommend his services to anyone in need of packing/unpacking, organizational, local moves, Goodwill/charity drop-offs, etc... the list goes on.
